Jonathan Orders Increased Security Around Health Workers Following Kano Shootings



President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the killing of nine health workers by gunmen in Kano state on Friday. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President promised that the death of the health workers would not be in vain as his government would intensify efforts to eradicate polio in the country.

18 Inmates On Hunger Strike In Oman Prison



Eighteen jailed activists began a hunger strike today (Saturday) to protest the delay in the Appeal Court hearing for cases on cyber law violations as well as their appeal not being taken up so far by the Supreme Court.
“We have been requesting the court to hear another case against some of the activists, who are already serving six-month terms for wrongful gathering,” Esmail Al Muqabali, who is serving an 18-month prison term for insulting the Sultan and violating cyber laws, told Gulf News over the phone from Sumayil Central Prison.

South Africa Jails Fisherman For Killing A Shark





A South African man has become the first person in the world to be convicted of killing a great white shark after he hooked one while fishing from the shore.
Leon Bekker, of George, Western Cape, pleaded guilty to contravention of the Marine Living Resources Act which includes attempting to kill, disturb or be in possession of a white shark without a permit. Bekker pointed out that he had no idea at first that he’d hooked a great white shark but he pleaded guilty so as not to waste the court’s time.

Following the sighting of a branded Honda saloon car popularly called ‘End-of-Discussion’ with a Lamido/Amaechi 2015 picture on the ever-busy Muhammadu Buhari Way (formerly Wharf Road), Kaduna, on Thursday, which led to speculations that indeed, Lamido, the governor of Jigawa state is nursing a presidential ambition, his spokesperson, Alhaji Umar Kyari, has said it is too early for anyone to link his boss with the 2015 presidential poll.
He said, “We are just in the first quarter of 2013 and people are already talking about 2015.
“His Excellency, the governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, is in Jigawa, concentrating on repairing the damage done to our state by the previous administration.

PFN Gets New President As Oritsejafor Bows Out After 3 Years



The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has a new president. He is Rev. Felix Omobude.
Omobude’s was announced as the successor to Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), on Friday at the end of the PFN’s 12th National Biennial Conference held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
Oritsejafor, who held the position for three years, appealed to members of the pentecostal body to give Omobude the maximum support to enable him succeed to  “shepherd the flock’’.
The outgoing PFN president urged the church leaders to expunge corruption from the church to keep the church pure.
Prior to his elevation, Omobude was the General Superintendent of New Covenant Church in Benin City, Edo.


Over 30 Gunmen Attack Police Station In Kano



Police officers, Friday night, successfully repelled an attack by suspected terrorists on Minjibir Divisional station, 32km east of Kano city.
We were told by security sources that the assailants, numbering over 30, stormed the station at about 8.30pm  on motorcycles and tricycles and launched an offensive on the station.
The sources stated that the officers  on duty  responded gallantly in the ensuing firefight that lasted 45 minutes, as the  windscreen of parked police vehicles and windows adorning the building were shattered.
Vanguard gathered that although,  there were no casualties,  two fleeing suspects were arrested.

Twenty People Cheat Death In Abeokuta Accident




Twenty people, among who were two babies, escaped death when the 18-seater passenger bus in which they were travelling swerved off the road and finally plunged into a ditch at the Aro end of Lagos-Abeokuta expressway in Abeokuta yesterday.
The accident, which involved a blue colour Mazda bus with registration number Ogun XE 413 TTD was on full speed when it got to the speed breaker at the Aro Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta where it suddenly swerved off the road into the ditch.

Boko Haram Members Arraigned In Makurdi



wo suspected members of Boko Haram sect, Habu Umaru and Mohammed Isah were yesterday arraigned before a Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court for criminal conspiracy.
Police Prosecutor, told the court that the first accused, Habu Umaru was nabbed last Thursday by operatives of the Department of Security Services, DSS, Benue State Command on a tip off while he was carrying out surveillance of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Makurdi, with the intent to bomb the church.
According to him, during the interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted being a member of the Boko Haram sect and also disclosed that he hailed from Kalu local government area of Nasarawa State.

Reps Propose N25 Million Fine And 15-Year Jail Term For Yahoo Yahoo Boys



The House of Representatives has proposed heavy penalties for “Computer misuse and Cybercrimes,” with fines ranging from N5m to N25m for offenders. Convicted persons will also serve jail terms ranging from two to 15 years.
Cybercrime is commonly known as Yahoo Yahoo in Nigeria.
The penalties are contained in amendments proposed to the Criminal Code and the Penal Code. The two bills have already passed second reading at the House and are scheduled for public hearing by the House Committee on Justice headed by Mr. Ali Ahmad.

President Jonathan In London Clinic Over Intestinal Problems; Babangida’s Leg Disease Worsens




An intestinal problem has forced President Jonathan to cancel a planned surprise visit to the Super Eagles in South Africa, medical sources in London said today.
The Nigeria president, who is on a whirlwind three-nation trip to Egypt, the United Kingdom and France, had planned to surprise the Super Eagles in South Africa following their qualification for the final of the African Cup of Nations last Wednesday.

56-Year-Old Man Banned From Talking To Women For 10 Years



A s*x pest has been banned from speaking to women for ten years.
David Delahunty, 56, could be jailed just for saying hello to a woman he does not know. A judge imposed the ban after Delahunty admitted s*xual assault. He walked up to a stranger at a bus stop, kissed her on the cheek and told her she was a “bonny lass”.  But he then terrified the woman by making lewd suggestions and falsely claiming he was a defiler who had just been freed from prison.
The victim, in her 20s, was left feeling “disgusted and frightened”, the judge was told. Delahunty, of Carlisle, Cumbria, was given a nine-month suspended jail term and 120 hours’ community work.

JJ: Suspected Rogue Made To Drink Engine Oil




A suspected thief who allegedly stole a mobile phone was baptized with and forced to drink dirty engine after he was subjected to severe beatings.
The suspect, James Amanor, a 23-year-old scrap dealer, after receiving the beatings, was marched to a nearby fitting shop near the Community 18 Junction, close to Sakumono in Tema, by the irate mob. The mob poured gallons of dirty engine oil on him and forced him to drink some.

Osun Set To Distribute Computer Tablets To Students In Public Schools



Mr Oyelade Oyeniran, the Permanent Secretary in  Osun  Ministry of Education,  on Friday said computer tablets also known as ‘Opon Imon’ would soon be distributed to students in  public schools in the state.
Oyeniran disclosed this on Friday in an interview in Osogbo.He noted that  the tablets had been acquired, saying, “what remains is to commence distribution once the state governor launches  it.” According to him, the distribution of the tablets will  start with SS 3  students  preparing for their SSCE and NECO examinations.

How Robbers Raped 35-Year-Old Wife In Husband’s Presence



Residents of Ogida quarters in Benin City were shocked last Saturday when they woke to see a house wife (names withheld) shouting and pleading for help.
They rushed to the house only to discover that the woman was raped by three young men who stormed the house at about 3am.  They further discovered the victim’s husband who was tied by the robbers and pushed  under the bed. Saturday Vanguard learnt that the suspects Peter Anigboro (25 years old), Lucky Williams (22) and Olise Friday, forced the door of the residence of the victim open with an impoverished gun and a dagger.
The suspects immediately went for the husband, whom they tied his legs and hands after which he was pushed under the bed.

Channels TV presenter Joe Ighile collapses on set, dies in hospital



Channels TV Head of Sports, Joe Ighile, collapsed on set last night while presenting the 9'Oclock live sports programme. After introducing the programme, Joe told the crew that he was feeling uncomfortable and asked to take a break. He stepped out of the studio for some fresh air and collapsed a few minutes later.  He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he later died. He was 47 years old. 
Joe Ighile joined Channels TV in 2003. He's survived by a wife, two children and aged mother. May his soul rest in peace.

Facebook Murder:Receptionist Recounts How Cynthia Was Found Dead



The trial of the suspects in connection with the murder of Facebook girl, Cynthia Osokogu began in Lagos today with the state calling Mrs Ifeyinwa Njegbu, a receptionist at Cosmilla Hotel, where Cynthia’s body was found, stone dead.
In her testimony, Ifeyinwa told the court that while on duty on 21 July, 2012, she checked in two guests, a man and a woman who claimed to be a couple into Room C1 of the hotel at about 12 noon. She noted that at about 8 a.m the next day, while she was preparing to hand over to one of her colleagues, Vivian Amule, the couple informed her through phone that they were checking out.
“After I had handed over to my colleague, I asked her to check out the couple since they had told me that they were leaving that morning”
