Femi Aborishade, Nigerian human rights activist and Senior Lecturer at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has alleged threats to his life and his family following successive attacks at his residence and stalking by an unknown gang, allegations now pulling the institution apart.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, Mr. Aborishade narrated how, at about 1:30 am on November 22, 2012, a gang broke into his residence, beating him up alongside his wife and making away with some personal effects.

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, yesterday, said he inherited  N4,451 from his predecessor, Timipre Sylva, in February 2012 and gave a graphic account of how his administration grew the paltry sum to over N16 billion.

The Governor, who spoke before proceeding on a two-week break, said the N50 billion Bond his embattled predecessor secured was also posing a challenge to his administration, lamenting that the figure would hit N104 billion in 2017.

Adams Oshiomhole of Edo said on Monday that he retired a permanent secretary over what he described as alleged “irresponsible act”. Oshiomhole justified the compulsory retirement of Mr Alhassan Ikloha, as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment , in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Peter Okhiria, in Benin.  The governor spoke at a meeting held with permanent secretaries in the state civil service at the Government House. He explained the retired officer contracted out the Museum Ground at Kings Square at a paltry sum.

A woman has been arrested by the police after she brutally killed her boyfriend by hitting him with an empty beer bottle on the forehead several times.30-year-old Winnet turned violent, accusing her late boyfriend, Simon (33) of infidelity after the deceased had received a phone call. The infuriated Winner was eager to know the identity of the caller but her boyfriend failed to answer her. This resulted in the bottle assault. Police confirmed the murder which happened on December 22 at a bottle store in Chikanga.

Zamfara State Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Sector Commander, Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar, has said that  64 persons died in 102 road traffic accidents involving 121 vehicles in Zamfara during the Ember months last year.

Abubakar made the fact known in an interview with newsmen in Gusau yesterday, pointing out that the situation was in spite of the intensive safe driving public awareness campaign by FRSC. He said 302 persons sustained various degrees of injuries in the accidents and attributed the high death toll to reckless driving by commercial vehicle drivers.

Some aggrieved nurses at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos State, and the management have disagreed over issues bordering on negligence, poor incentives and security lapses, among others, in the hospital. The aggrieved nurses said the hospital was paying lip service to their safety and welfare. They said on many occasions they had been attacked or molested by the mentally sick patients, the management looked the other way, leaving them to bear the expenses on their own.

Suspect exhuming his son's corpse

The police command in Kogi state have arrested a middle aged man, Mr Hosea Folorunsho in Egbe town of Yagba West local government council for the alleged gruesome murder of his son for ritual purpose. Briefing journalists on the arrest in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Katsina says the suspect, a herbalist, also buried the child in a shallow grave in his own compound.

Jamiu Adetutu, aka Jarmani, has been arrested by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Lagos for allegedly assaulting an Ikorodu, Lagos resident named Nurain Lani. Before his arrest, Jarmani was allegedly notorious for molesting residents of Ilemere, Orupodi, Ibeshe and other parts of Ikorodu in company with a gang of hoodlums. The Peoples Democratic Party has said it will not sanction President Goodluck Jonathan over the printing and pasting of posters announcing his ambition to seek re-election in 2015. The party said it was satisfied that the President had denied responsibility for the printing and pasting of the posters.

Indications have emerged that soaring domestic air fares may soon crash by 33 per cent from the present average of N30,000 per hour flight to N20,000 following the return of some local airlines to business. Dana Air, which stopped operations seven months ago after the tragic crash of June 3, 2012, resumed operations on Friday with fare as low as N14,400 for a Lagos-Abuja flight. The Federal Government has launched an offensive against a little known terror group, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi Biladis Sudan, which roughly translates as Vanguards for the Aid of Muslims in Black Africa.

Police rearrest pastor for raping 12-year-old

The Lagos State Police Command has rearrested a 40-year-old pastor, Alasco Sobowale, for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl in Epe area of the state. Police authorities said the suspect, who is a pastor at Okiki Imole Church, Epe, was rearrested on Thursday at his home located at 10, Togodo Street, Temu Town.

The police had arrested Sobowale on December 21, 2012, for allegedly raping the minor but was later released on bail because courts were not in session.

A California appeals court overturned the rape conviction of a man who authorities say pretended to be a sleeping woman's boyfriend before initiating intercourse, ruling that an arcane law from 1872 doesn't protect unmarried women in such cases.

A panel of judges reversed the trial court's conviction of Julio Morales and remanded it for retrial, in a decision posted Wednesday from the Los Angeles-based court.
