Picture: Jilted NURTW member sets ex-lover ablaze



Adesanmoye Kehinde, a senior official of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Ikotun Lagos branch, has been arrested and dragged to  Ejigbo Magistrate Court in Lagos for allegedly setting his lover, Janet, 31, ablaze after she called off their relationship.
 
Kehinde, 43, who's married with three children, had been dating Delta state born Janet for some time and was planning to marry her. Janet however made a decision to call the affair off because she felt Kehinde was too troublesome. Continue...

Egypt sets Muslim Brotherhood chief's trial for December 9



The trial of Muslim Brotherhood chief Mohammed Badie, charged with inciting violence against anti-Islamist protesters, was set for December 9 by an Egyptian court Sunday.

The state-run Middle East News Agency reported that 14 Islamists, including senior Brotherhood officials, will also stand trial

Court sets ₦20k Bail For Man Accused Of Stealing ₦500



An air conditioner repairer working with a hotel in Lagos, Nigeria has been arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrate Court, charged with alleged theft.
The repairer, Paul Muyiwa Ojikutu, a resident of No. 10 Aguragberigbe, Ikorodu is charged with stealing N500 only.

President Goodluck Jonathan sets up committee to probe aviation Minister, Stella Oduah car scandal




In line with the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, President Goodluck Jonathan has setup a three-man panel to investigate the N225million armoured car scandal involving aviation minister, Stella Oduah.  Mr Abati said the panel will soon be chaired by the immediate past Head of Service, Sali Bello and will include the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, and Air Vice Marshal Dik Iruenebere. The panel is to find out why the cars were bought and whether the procurement of the cars followed due process or not. Stella Oduah was conspicuously absent at today's Federal Executive Council meeting.

Pres. Goodluck Jonathan sets deadline for registration of all Nigerians




President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday inaugurated the National Identity Card Project with a directive that all eligible Nigerians should be registered by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) by December 2014.

Jonathan gave the directive during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he also launched the National Identification Number (NIN), expressing displeasure at the proliferation of data capturing activities by private and public institutions in the country.

Graphic photos: African man dies after sitting down at the national mall and calmly sets himself ablaze.



A man has died after setting himself on fire on the National Mall in Washington. Police responded to an emergency call about a fire shortly before 4.30pm on the Mall. The man was airlifted to hospital after bystanders used the shirts off their backs to tamp down the flames, police and witnesses said.
The man, who was not identified, was conscious when he was taken to Washington Hospital Centre but he later died from his injuries.

Former bank chief Jim Ovia sets up mega school in Agbor, Delta State



Ex-Zenith bank MD, billionaire business man Jim Ovia has set up a massive school in his hometown of Agbor in Delta State. The school is called James Hope College (JHC) and has a Briton as the principal. Mr Ovia built the school, which is supported by a substantial endowment fund, in his hometown to make education affordable to his people. The academic session for the first set of students will start in September 2013.

Heartless Nurse Sets 11-Yr Old Girl Ablaze For Being Hungry



Doctors at the General Hospital, Gbagada, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, are seriously battling to save the life of an 11-year old girl, Ita Bassey-Eno, who was allegedly set ablaze by the woman she lives with, Mrs Nkese Iroakazi, a nurse at a hospital in Surulere.

Iroakazi was alleged to have poured kerosene on Bassey-Eno before lighting a match stick to set her ablaze after the girl was said to have stolen a piece of meat from the pot.

Heartless Man sets pregnant lover ablaze

Until June 23, not many could have suspected that all was not well between Emeka Agu, 28, and his pregnant girlfriend, Miss Bidemi Akinsolufe. That night, disaster struck in their home in Ayobo area of Lagos, as Emeka allegedly set his lover ablaze.
The reason? To prevent the lady from charming other men with her beauty. Nearly a month after, Bidemi still writhes in pain at the Gbagada General Hospital, even as Emeka awaits his date with the law. The reporter met the badly burnt lady on her hospital bed and she narrated what led to the sad incident.
“I started dating him last year but my boyfriend is very jealous. Even whenever my sister called me, he would want to call back to be sure it wasn’t a man that called me. “He was working before and had his own place but he later lost his job and had no place to stay. I secured a mini-flat in Ayetoro and asked him to join me there.

Jungle Jungle : Lagos Angry Mob Sets Robbers Ablaze For Stealing Recharge Cards



An angry mob has set three suspected armed robbers ablaze in Ikotun, Lagos State.  PUNCH Metro learnt on Thursday that the robbers were set on fire on Wednesday evening, shortly after robbing a recharge card trader at Second Junction bus stop on Governor’s Road. Our correspondent, who visited the area, observed burnt tyres, carcass of a burnt motorcycle and some human flesh on the side of the road.
The recharge card trader, Ese Akporhono, who had a bandage on her head, told our correspondent that the robbers came to her shop posing as customers.  She said a few seconds later, the suspects pointed a gun at her and stolerecharge cards worth N400,000 before fleeing.

Court Sets 20 September For Ruling On Ownership Of Ibori’s $15 Million Bribe




The Federal High Court, Abuja, has set 20 September for judgment in a suit filed by the Delta State Government against the Federal Government over ownership of $15 million (N2.4 billion).

The money is alleged to be bribe offered former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, by convicted former Delta governor, James Ibori. Justice Gabriel Kolawole gave the date on Wednesday after counsel to the parties adopted their addresses.  The respondents in the suit are the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Central Bank of Nigeria.  Justice Kolawole said the parties had 21 days within which to file the addresses while the plaintiff (Delta State Government) had another 14 days to respond to issues bordering on point of law.  “In the circumstance, therefore, the judgment is reserved for September 20,’’ he said.  The Delta State government had approached the court to claim ownership of the $15 million.

Ramadan: Sokoto Sets Aside N56.7m For Grains, Clothes



The Sokoto State Government has earmarked N56.7 million to buy food and clothing materials for indigent persons during the Ramadan, an official said on Saturday.
Alhaji Lawal Maidoki, the Chairman of Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Committee, made the plan known  in Sokoto.
Maidoki said the items included 6,300 bags of grains and 6,420 clothing materials, adding that the grains, namely millet, maize and guinea-corn, would cost N 50.4 million.
“No fewer than 6,300 indigent persons, both men and women, including widows and widowers, would benefit from the annual gesture by the state government.

Pres. Jonathan sets up committees on Boko Haram & other security challenges

Following the consideration yesterday by the National Security Council of the report of the technical committee it set up to review fresh modalities for addressing security challenges in the North, President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the constitution of a Presidential Committee to constructively engage key members of Boko Haram and define a comprehensive and workable framework for resolving the crisis of insecurity in the country.

The Committee’s terms of reference will include developing a framework for the granting of amnesty; setting up of a framework  through which disarmament could take place within a 60-day time frame; the development of a comprehensive victims’ support programme, and the development of mechanisms to address the underlying causes of insurgencies that will help to prevent future occurrences.

Photo: Indian Family Sets Themselves On Fire Due To Hunger



Five people set themselves on fire in Gujarat, leaving one man dead as they protested against official plans to raze their home in a drive to remove illegal structures, police said yesterday.
According to GulfTimes

The five people, including three women, belonged to the same family and turned up at a city government office in Rajkot carrying kerosene-filled containers around noon yesterday, the police said.
Ram Sinh, a police official based in Rajkot said the group came to request the officials to stop demolition of illegal encroachments.
But when their request was not granted they poured kerosene on themselves and set themselves on fire,Sinh said.

Jealous Wife Sets Husband Ablaze for Spending More Time with Rival



A former reporter with the Federal Radio  Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Kaduna National Station and legislative aide to Senator Mohammed Sale, representing Kaduna Central senatorial zone, Mallam Mohammed Ibrahim Matazu has been killed  by his second wife.
 Matazu passed on Friday as a result of burns he suffered when his wife poured petrol on him and set him  ablaze, accusing the deceased of spending more time with the first wife who resides in Kaduna. The incident was said to have occurred on February 7, 2013 at the deceased Gwarimpa residence where he lives with the second wife.

Father Sets House Ablaze And Kills His 6 Children As He Frames Ex-Girlfriend



A father accused of killing his six children in a house fire started the blaze as part of a 'plan' to frame his ex-girlfriend after becoming locked in a custody battle with her, a court has heard.
Mick Philpott, along with his wife Mairead, allegedly started the fire at their semi-detached home after making reports to the police that his former partner, Lisa Willis, had been threatening him and his family.
There were emotional scenes during their manslaughter trial at Nottingham Crown Court today as the 999 call made by the couple as the fire took hold was played to the jury.

Hot Tempered Man: Sets Wife On Fire For Cooking Meat Without Salt





A man in Bihar, India set his young wife on fire merely because she forgot to add salt to a mutton dish she had cooked at home. 
The victim with severe burn injuries has been admitted to a local hospital for treatment even as police are conducting raids to arrest her absconding husband. The heart-rending incident occurred at Alam Tota locality under Forbesganj police station in eastern Bihar’s Araria district on Thursday night but was reported in the local media only on Saturday.
