Al- Makura appears before panel, dismisses allegations




Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has dismissed as spurious and unfounded the 16-count allegations of misconduct levelled against him by the state House of Assembly.
His lawyers also urged the panel to “enter a notice of dismissal of the impeachment notice served on the governor for wants of proof” of the allegations.

₦255m car scandal: Reps’ panel indicts Oduah, NCAA



There were indications on Wednesday that the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation had established some infractions against the Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
The committee is investigating the controversial purchase of two bulletproof BMW cars by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority allegedly for Oduah at a whopping N255m. However, she testified before the committee, which is chaired by Mrs. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, and denied that the cars were bought for her use.
The panel  ended  its public hearing on the transaction on Monday.

Senate panel approves plan to strike Syria




The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted on Wednesday to approve President Barack Obama's plan to strike Syria in retaliation for the reported use of chemical weapons by leader Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Boko Haram: Amnesty panel shows ‘peace talks video’ •They met with us in prison - Northern CAN



The Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Resolution of Security Challenges in the North on Friday released a video clip of what it described as a meeting with some leaders of the Boko Haram sect. The committee also said the men were close associates of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau.
The 30-minute video was played to State House correspondents inside the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The committee holds its meetings in the hall.

Jonathan Meets Boko Haram Amnesty Panel

President Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday, met with members of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North.

The Chairman of the committee, Karibu Turaki, said his team decided to call the meeting to ask President Jonathan the government’s position after speaking with different stakeholders and Boko Haram members.

“We feel that having interacted with most of the security agencies, we have come to the critical stage where we also need to hear what the government’s side is. That was what we came to discuss with Mr President,” he said.

FG raises inter-ministerial panel on flooding





In its bid to prevent the kind of flood recorded in most parts of the country last year and its adverse loss, the Federal Government on Friday inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee saddled with the responsibility of producing a national framework for the application of climate services.
The committee headed  by the Minister of National Planning, Dr. Shamshudeen Usman, has  Ministers of Aviation; Agriculture and Rural Development; Environment, Water Resources, Health, Works, Science and Technology as well as Transport as members, while the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will provide the secretariat.
While inaugurating the committee on behalf of the government, Vice President Namadi Sambo said the panel was constituted by President Goodluck Jonathan based on the early weather warning memorandum premised on last year’s rainy season’s flood disaster that has caused great losses to the nation as presented to the President by  the Minister of Aviation, Stella, Oduah.

Fashola inaugurates panel to probe banger fire



Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has constituted a tribunal to probe the December 26, 2012 fire and explosion at the Giwa and Okoya areas of Lagos Island.
Fashola said on Monday that the inauguration of the panel represented the commitment of his administration to the protection of lives and property of Lagosians.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Sunday Ishola (retd.) is to, among other terms of reference, inquire into the remote and immediate causes of the inferno which occurred when fireworks, allegedly stored in a building at No. 45 Ojo-Giwa Street, Idumota, Lagos, exploded.

Virginity test: Panel submits report to Ogun today





Members  of rival cult groups clashed in Ketu, Lagos on Saturday and Sunday, vandalising vehicles and robbing residents in the process. 
PUNCH Metro learnt that the clash was due to a long-standing feud between the Eiye Confraternity and another gang known as KK.  It was learnt that a fight broke out in the area during the New Year carnival known as Westside Carnival in which two members of the KK gang were killed.
