Nigeria To The Rescue!




A courtesy visit to sister publications Mmegi and The Monitor by the Nigerian High Commissioner to Botswana this 
week revealed that Botswana can source oil from the West African giant on concessionary terms, writes DOUGLAS TSIAKO

 
Nigeria can take all of Botswana's cattle, the High Commissioner of Nigeria to Botswana, Charles Cocodia, said when he paid a courtesy call on Dikgang Publishing Company, the publishers of Mmegi and The Monitor newspapers, on Tuesday this week.
Ambassador Cocodia, who was accompanied by his Second Secretary, Ibrahim Yusuf, was received by the Editor of The Monitor, Kagiso Sekokonyane, and the News Editor of both newspapers, Douglas Tsiako, standing in for the Editor of Mmegi, Tshireletso Motlogelwa, who was attending to other matters.

Armed group kills 10 in central Nigeria - official





Feb 22 (Reuters) - Armed men shot or hacked to death 10 people in a village in central Nigeria's Plateau state, a government official and witness said on Friday, in a region with a long history of ethnic violence.
Men carrying rifles and machetes stormed Kogom village on Thursday afternoon, killing six adults and four children, said Habila Musa, who witnessed the attack. He said some of the killers were dressed in military uniform.

LAGOS, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Nestle Nigeria aims to triple its sales in Africa's most populous nation to 350 billion naira ($2.2 bln) in 10 years as the consumer market for food and cereal booms.
The local unit of Swiss company Nestle SA, the world's biggest food group, will invest 100 billion naira ($635 mln) over the same period to achieve its sales target, chief financial officer Martin Kruegel told Reuters on Friday.

Nigeria Signs Power-Company Sales Pacts With Siemens, Transcorp



Nigeria signed deals for the sale of 15 state power companies to buyers including Siemens AG (SIE), Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEP) and Transnational Corp. of Nigeria Plc, the West African nation’s privatization agency said.
The buyers now have 15 days to pay 25 percent of the amounts they bid, the Abuja-based Bureau of Public Enterprises said today in an e-mailed statement. The Nigerian government sold 10 power distributors and five generation companies in September and October. Full payment is due within 90 days.

The musician who is famous for her sense of style, died at Reddington Hospital, in Victoria Island, Lagos. She was said to have been rushed to the hospital after she complained of a migraine and then gave up the ghost in the hands of her friend and Channel O Veejay; Denrele Edun, who was in the hospital with her.

Iran denies allegations of organizing spy cell in Nigeria

Iran denied on Friday Nigerian allegations that it had trained militants arrested in Nigeria on charges of planning attacks on U.S. and Israeli targets there.
Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said such allegations were "made up as the result of the ill will of the enemies of the two countries' good relations", Iranian state television reported.
"Iran and Nigeria have friendly and close relations and despite the vast efforts of the two countries' enemies in recent years relations and cooperations have always improved," he said.

A 4-year-old Oregon girl pulled her toddler sister from a car wreck that killed their mother and then huddled with her under a blanket in frigid temperatures until they were saved hours later by two passersby, police said.
Jessica Rath, 26, of Astoria, was driving with her two little girls to pick up her fisherman husband from a port late Tuesday night when she fell asleep at the wheel and barreled head-on into a tree, local police said.
Rath was killed instantly. Her daughters survived, but the 2-year-old, Lylah, was severely injured, according to local reports.

Amanda Bowden of East Haven was arraigned Wednesday in state Superior Court on a charge of one count of false information and hoaxes, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.  “As alleged, this defendant made a series of threats that described in great detail her intention to carry out a suicidal mass murder at a community college in New Haven,” U.S. Attorney David Fein said in a statement. “All threats of this nature will be viewed as serious by this office and prosecuted to the full extent of federal law.”

Some "Nigerian Women" rented by Nigeria's first lady and the minister of the FCT Bala Muhmammed were out early yesterday morning on the streets of Abuja for a "staged demonstration" in support of the minister's plan to build a N4 billion mission building for the first lady's pet project.
The women, youths and physically challenged protesters were all carrying placards supposedly written for them abusing Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka. Some of the placards read: "Educated illiterate", "Soyinka: Grammar King without sense", "Abuja has come to stay ".

Cultural diversification in Nigeria: A blessing or a Curse?

Nigeria combs border areas for kidnapped French family




MAIDUGURI (AFP) – Nigerian security forces searched the country’s northeast along the border with Cameroon on Thursday in a bid to free a French family kidnapped earlier this week, officials said.
“Intelligence reports have shown that the abductors may be holding their victims … around the Dikwa area,” a security official in the region said on condition of anonymity.
“But I must tell you we haven’t got the exact location. Our men and other sister security agencies, especially our colleagues in the immigration service, are already on operation and we have the strictest instruction to carry out the operation with caution.”

Elumelu spoke with State House correspondents shortly after his firm, which emerged the preferred bidder for the Ugheli plant, signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company Plc.

NOBEL Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has observed that mental and spiritual slavery still exist in some parts of the world, including Nigeria, as some religious leaders are determined to enslave others rather than preach the gospel that appeal through the minds.
Soyinka made the observation in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday, at the public presentation of a book ‘’He Dared: The story of Okuku Udo Akpabio, the Great Colonial African Ruler,” written by Offonmbuck Akpabio, held at the Le’Meridien Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort.

SSS Uncovers Iranian Terror Cell In Lagos





The State Security Service said in Abuja on Wednesday that it had uncovered a terror network, coordinated by Iranians, in Lagos.

The SSS said this while parading a leader of an Islamic sect, Abdullahi Berende, and two others said to be operators of the Iranian terror cell gathering information about Israelis and Americans living in Nigeria.

Paraded alongside 50-year-old Berende were Sulaiman Saka and Saheed Adewunmi. The three were said to be working for Iranian terrorists planning to attack Americans and Israelis in the country.
A third suspect, Bunyamin Yusuf, is said to be at large.

Berende who is said to be a leader of the Shi’a Islamic sect in Ilorin, Kwara State, told journalists that he was employed by “people who were ready to capitalise on my weakness,” though he denied being part of a terrorist network.

How Can One Nigeria Continue To Exist?



Caging ourselves in disunity or do we need common respect (identifying all and sundry as "us", as shared Nigerians) living happily in alliance? It's our take.

The recent series of bombings by the Boko Haram crew in Nigeria has cast a new layer of lack confidence in to the portfolio of the cynic's mind questioning whether the nation conceived in alliance can survive. I agree to disagree that it cannot. The preceding journeys that our founding fathers had ushered us around, can never be gone despite the fact that it's being distracted by the present. Our future is tied to their sweat, enduring labor. A nation that continue to lives colonialism, and civil war can endure ethnicism, and Boko Haram. The following can help Nigeria continue to live as one single entity:
