CBN Pegs New Deposit Limit For Account Holders




The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday set new deposit limits for all categories of account holders and introduced three-tier Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for banks. With the new policy, bank customers have now been categorised into Low Value Accounts (Level One); Medium Value Accounts (Level two) and High Value Accounts (Level three). 
For Low Value Account holders, the policy pegs a maximum single deposit amount of N20,000 and maximum cumulative balance of N200,000 at any point in time.  For Medium Value Account holders, a maximum single deposit of N50,000 and a maximum cumulative balance of N400,000. However for the High Value Account, no limit is placed on cumulative balance.

FG In New $3bn Agriculture Financing Agreement With USAID



In the latest of its moves at receiving foreign aids, the Federal Government yesterday agreed on a $3bn agriculture financing with United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The agreement was for USAID to extend its financing role to the agricultural sector, in order to boost the activities of the sector.
During the agreement, the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, signed on behalf of the Federal Government, while the USAID Administrator, Dr. Rajiv Shah, signed for the Agency.

More than 100 killed in new ‘massacre’ in Syria –Watchdog



More than 100 civilians have been killed in a new “massacre” in Syria, a watchdog said Thursday, as Russia slammed the United States for blaming deadly blasts at a university campus on the Damascus regime. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the deaths came when the army on Tuesday swept through farmlands north of Homs, where it said around 1,000 people had sought refuge from fighting ravaging the city in central Syria.  “The Syrian regime carried out a new massacre on Tuesday claiming 106 victims, including women and children,” said the Britain-based watchdog, which relies on a network of activists and medics on the ground.

7 Men Gang molest 29-Year-Old Married Woman On A Bus In New Delhi, India



In an incident similar to a sexual assault that sent shock waves worldwide, Indian police say a woman was gang-molestd over the weekend by seven men after she boarded a bus at night. Police arrested six suspects, including the bus driver, after the alleged Friday night attack in Gurdaspur district in Punjab. A manhunt for the other man was under way Sunday.

Driver killed by LASTMAmen Planned New Year party





A commercial driver, Mr. Isaac Popoola, who was allegedly beaten to death on Monday by two officials of the Lagos State Transportation Management Authority, had before his brutal killing, started preparing for the Yuletide celebration. The deceased’s son, Ibukunoluwa, told our correspondent, at the family residence in Akowonjo, Egbeda area of the state on Tuesday that his father had fixed January 2, 2013 for the celebration.

New petition urges US to keep Piers Morgan 'because UK doesn't want him'



Following a groundswell of support in America for demands to expel Piers Morgan from the country and deport him back to the UK over his views on US gun controls, it seems that any return home for the chatshow host would not be greeted warmly by everyone.

The White House has yet to respond to an online petition calling for the TV presenter to be marched to the nearest American exit, but it has not stopped UK citizens from launching a pre-emptive strike against any such move.

FG Begins Work On 10 New Rail Lines





The Federal Government has announced plans to construct 10 new rail lines to cover other parts of the country currently not linked by rail. The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, said on Friday that already feasibility studies had commenced on seven of the proposed railway lines. Umar, who spoke in Lagos at the inauguration of the Lagos-Kano train service and resumption of fuel haulage by train from Lagos to Offa, said that the feasibility studies on three other planned rail lines would be done in 2013.

It was the web of conspiracy tales on how the country’s power equations were determined in the town that gave rise to the myth of the Kaduna Mafia. The flux in the tenure of its governors is, however, no myth!
After the death of Governor Patrick Yakowa last Saturday, another myth around Kaduna has emerged. No pair of governor and deputy that entered office ever ended in office together. The first civilian governor of the old Kaduna State, was the redoubtable Balarabe Musa who was forced out of office in June 1981 upon his impeachment by the National Party of Nigeria, NPN dominated House of Assembly. His deputy, Alhaji Abba Musa Rimi eventually finished his term in office.

Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero (44), is the Kaduna State Governor-in-waiting. He is an Accountant and was a Commissioner of Finance in Kaduna state till May 2010. Born May 1, 1968 in Zaria, Alhaji Mukhtar Yero, had his primary school education at LEA Kaura in Zaria City between 1974 to 1980 and went to Government Secondary School, Ikara from 1980 to 1985. He completed his secondary school education at GovernmentDay Secondary School, Zaria in 1986.

Giving Aba a “New Face”: Abia State Government Set to Demolish 1800 Structures in Aba





Abia State governor, Theodore Orji has disclosed that plans have been concluded to demolish 1,800 structures in Aba, the commercial nerves of the state.
As an explanation for this move, the governor said it is designed to give Aba the new face that the Commercial centre of Abia State ought to wear, just as he said that sixteen roads have been marked for reconstruction in Aba.

World Aids Day: Nigeria Records Decline In New Hiv Infections





Nigeria recorded 300,000 new cases in 2012., even as the country was ranked as number eight among 12 countries in the world that have recorded a decline in the new Human Immuno-deficiency Virus, HIV, infection rate. However,Benue state still leads other states in the federation in HIV prevalence with a prevalence rate of 10.7 percent,while Kebbi state, with 1.0% recorded the least prevalence rate in the country.

VIDEO: New Sect Claims Responsibility For SARS HQ Attack, Promises More Attack





Another Islamic sect that emerged through an exclusive video five months ago that goes by the name Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan had through another email exclusively sent to DESERT HERALD claimed responsibility of Monday night attack at the Headquaters of Anti Terrorist Unit at Garki in Abuja. The new group in the email had promised similar attacks against detention centres across the country.
