Atiku, 215 others sign petition to end ASUU strike

Two hundred and sixteen Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora have signed an online petition asking the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the industrial dispute which has kept public universities shut for four months.

The petition launched on change.org, a go-to site for web protests, is asking President Goodluck Jonathan and the National President of ASUU, Dr. Nassir Faggae, to reach an “amicable consensus.”

In the petition entitled, “Mr. President and the Academic Staff Union of Universities: Please End the ASUU Strike now,” the petitioners said the Presidency should stop playing politics with education of the Nigerian youth.

22 million sign anti-Morsi petition - Egypt opposition

More than 22 million people have signed a petition in Egypt demanding the departure of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi and a snap election, the opposition Tamarod (Arabic for rebellion) group said on Saturday.

"Our petition has gathered 22,134,465 signatures," Tamarod spokesman Mahmud Badr told journalists on the eve of Sunday's first anniversary of Morsi's inauguration when it has called for nationwide protests.

This figure is higher than the number of people who voted for Morsi in last year's presidential election -- 13.23 million, or 51.7 percent of the ballots cast.

Previously, Tamarod said 15 million people in Egypt had signed the petition demanding that the president step aside.

Drama At Election Petition Tribunal As Two Individuals Claim Party Chairmanship

It was drama of some sorts at the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Tuesday when two persons each claimed to be the state chairman of Accord Party (AP). They were both subsequently walked out of the courtroom.
The development, however, made the Justice Andovar Kaka’an-led three-member team to reserve further action on the petition of the party until it was able to settle the chairmanship issue. The AP had, in its petition, accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of disenfranchising its candidate, Mr Olawale Ojo, from participating in the October 20 governorship poll.

New petition urges US to keep Piers Morgan 'because UK doesn't want him'

Following a groundswell of support in America for demands to expel Piers Morgan from the country and deport him back to the UK over his views on US gun controls, it seems that any return home for the chatshow host would not be greeted warmly by everyone.

The White House has yet to respond to an online petition calling for the TV presenter to be marched to the nearest American exit, but it has not stopped UK citizens from launching a pre-emptive strike against any such move.

20 States Petition to Secede From US After Obama Re-election

Some people are really having a difficult time facing the reality of a Black president; so difficult in fact, citizens from 20 states and counting have filed petitions at We The People on WhiteHouse.gov to be granted permission to leave the union. The states include: Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, Michigan, Colorado, New Jersey, Montana, Missouri, North Dakota, Indiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New York, Arkansas and Oregon.

According to the terms of participation for “We The People,” as of October 3, 2011, petitions that meet the listed criteria become searchable on WhiteHouse.gov once and if they reach 150 signatures within 30 days. If that is accomplished, for President Obama to actively consider a petition, it must reach 25,000 signatures within the remainder of the same 30 day period. The White House reserves the right to change the time limit and number of signatures required. While there are several of the president’s policies that one could object too, at heart he is a moderate Democrat no more, no less.

Couple that with the fact that no other president since Lincoln has spawned calls of secession, it’s clear that the perceived “otherness” of President Obama is the reason for this sudden need to leave the United States simply because the person in the White House is black.

Tribunal upholds Uba’s election for Anambra South

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Awka, has dismissed the petition challenging the election of Sen. Andy Uba of the PDP as a senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District.

The petition was filed by the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate in the April, 2011, National Assembly election, Chuma Nzeribe.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday in Awka, the Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice G K Kaigama, said the petitioners failed to establish the allegation of corrupt practices.

The chairman, who added that they failed to establish allegation of falsification of results and over voting levelled against Uba, dismissed the petition

for lack of merit.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had conducted a re-run election

for the senatorial district following an allegation of electoral malpractice.

Reacting to the judgment, counsel to Nzeribe, Okwy Ejezie, said that the petitioners would appeal against the judgment, adding that the tribunal failed to address various issues raised during the trial.

“The judgment has made our case easier at the Appeal Court,’’ he said.

One of the supporters of Uba, Mr Osita Okonkwo, described the judgment of the tribunal as “erudite and well studied.’’

He said that it was ”a true reflection of the wishes of the electorate.”
