Ebola : Price of bitter kola skyrockets in Abia





Investigations by The PUNCH have revealed that the price of bitter kola across Abia markets has tripled following the recent speculation that the medicinal seed has the potency to cure the dreaded Ebola pandemic now ravaging some West African countries.

There have  been palpable fear and anxiety  across the state since last week following the report of a corpse in the neighbouring Anambra State suspected to have died of Ebola.

Despite assurances by the state government of its preparedness to contain the possible outbreak of the pandemic as some hospital wards had been designated to treat likely victims, residents still remain apprehensive.

NYSC redeploys corps members from Borno, Kano, Yobe, others



The National Youth Service Corps on Thursday announced the redeployment of corps members from seven northern states.

The affected states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano and Yobe states.

A statement on Thursday in Abuja by the Director of Public Relations in NYSC, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, said the decision followed the high rate of insecurity in some parts of the North.

The corps members are part of the  2014 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course  scheduled to commence next week Tuesday August 5, 2014.

The NYSC said due to logistic reasons, the orientation course will be conducted in two streams for different states.

Murder Of Alleged Prostit-ute: Abia Police Nab Two Suspects [PHOTO]



Two suspects are currently telling the Abia State Police Command what they know about the death of a 16-year-old girl, whose name was simply given as Esther. The decomposing body of Esther, said to be from Ebonyi State was found in an uncompleted building around the Cattle Market, Gariki, in Lokpanta, Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.

Until her death, Esther was alleged to be a girl of easy virtue, a trade she was said to have plied at the Lokpanta Cattle Market. 
The suspects, Uchenna Okorie and Levi Nwankwo, are currently with the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, where they are helping the police in their investigation into what happened to Esther.

Police Parade 16 Pregnant Women From Another Baby Factory In Abia



The State Security Service (SSS) in Abia State paraded 16 ladies aged between 17 and 37 in a baby factory yesterday where they were waiting to deliver and sell their children to prospective buyers.Director of SSS, Mathew Obodoechi described the house where the girls lived as very unhygienic and the women were all at various stages of pregnancy.

The house at No. 3 Anyamele Street, off Nicholas Avenue, in Umungasi area of Aba, doubled as a charity foundation called Cross Foundation International. Obodoechi said the women were kept there till they delivered and then were paid N50, 000 before they were sent away. Their babaies however, stayed back and were sold to people across the country.

Man sentenced to death by hanging in Abia state for killing his wife




An Abia State High Court has sentenced a banker, Mr. Theophilus Ajakaiye, to death by hanging for killing his wife, Theodora. (pictured above)
The convict allegedly murdered his wife on October 12, 2009 at Azumini Ndoki in the Ukwa Judicial Division of Abia.
Until her death, Theodora was an employee of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc.

The legal battle between the deceased’s family and the accused began soon after the alleged killing until the judgment recently.

The Presiding Judge, Justice T.U. Uzokwe, said in his judgment that having heard from the accused person, learned counsel for the accused and the prosecuting counsel, the offence carried a mandatory sentence which is death.

7 Dead As Building Collapses In Umuahia, Abia



Abuja - Seven people were killed when a building under construction collapsed in Umuahia in the Abia state capital. Efforts by the Red Cross Society and other rescue operations are on-going to rescue people trapped in the building that is situated at the Agbama Housing Estate.  This is the latest in a series of recent incidents of buildings collapsing worldwide. There was no immediate comment from the officials attending the scene.
Last week, several people were killed when a church building collapsed in Lagos.

Giving Aba a “New Face”: Abia State Government Set to Demolish 1800 Structures in Aba





Abia State governor, Theodore Orji has disclosed that plans have been concluded to demolish 1,800 structures in Aba, the commercial nerves of the state.
As an explanation for this move, the governor said it is designed to give Aba the new face that the Commercial centre of Abia State ought to wear, just as he said that sixteen roads have been marked for reconstruction in Aba.
