Terrorists Won’t Deter Us From Transforming Nigeria – Jonathan



President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday vowed that activities of terrorists that have been unleashing violence on parts of the country would not deter him from the goal of transforming Nigeria into a prosperous nation.

He therefore called on all Nigerians to remain strong and resolute in defence of freedom, unity, law and order, peace, security and progress of the nation.

Jonathan made the pledge in his Eid-el-Fitri message made available to journalists in Abuja.

16 church members suffocate, one dies at service



 A six year old boy has been confirmed dead while 16 others are receiving treatment for suffocation after they inhaled carbon monoxide fumes from a generator they were using during worship at the Young People's Christian Fellowship in Aba, Abia state today Saturday July 26th. 

According to eyewitnesses, the worshipers were doing their Friday night vigil with a generator close by when they started to collapse one by one. Residents of Eziukwu road where the worship centre is located woke up this morning to find the worshipers unconscious. There were initial fears that they'd all died but all of them, except a 6 year old boy, recovered in the hospital.

A shaft of pain knifed through his facial contours as he recounted the grisly experiences he had in prison for more than 23 years.  Prior to 1989, Calistus Ike had dreamt of becoming a very successful business man.
Little did he know that he was going to spend seven years as an awaiting trial inmate and another 16 years on the death row.
As the first son and bread winner of his family at that time, Ike, had all his dreams quashed after he was sentenced to death following his refusal to pay N200 bribe to the policeman that investigated an allegation against him.

While answering questions about her baby's father and her daughter on Channel's TV Sunrise programme today, singer Omawumi revealed she will  probabily get married next year.

"I will probably get married next year. We might do a location wedding or a local wedding. Warri is a good destination" she said

The Male Medical Hostel of Delta State university, Abraka was awakened to female shouting as a room in the Female Medical Hostel mysteriously caught fire as early as 2:13 AM

It’s been four years since rapper since Olaitan Olanipekun, famously known as Dagrin passed on from injuries sustained in a ghastly car crash in Mushin, but the nation keeps talking about him. Now, new findings have revealed that the Nigerian police in the area might have been responsible for his death.
Residents in Mushin in a new interview with SaharaReporters, blamed the fatal night-time crash on the Nigerian police in Alakara station.
According to them, Policemen at the Alakara Police Command in the Mushin area of Lagos State are notorious for illegal raiding, bribery, and even escapades of what some call ‘murder at night’.

Man kills pregnant burglar after she told him 'I'm going to have a baby'



 80 year old pensioner Tom Greer (pictured right) shot and killed Andrea Miller, 28 (pictured left), as she ran away from him after burgling his home with another man.

Mr Greer, who was not arrested for the killing, said he shot the woman twice in the back after she told him she was pregnant.
"She says 'don't shoot me, I'm pregnant - I'm going to have a baby'. And I shot her anyway. The lady didn't run as fast as the man so I shot her in the back twice. She's dead, but he got away." Mr Greer told news channel NBC4 without remorse.

Governor Okorocha gives shoot-at-sight order in cultists local government in Imo state




In a bid to fight the increasing spate of cult activities in the state, the Imo state Governor, Rochas Okorocha yesterday, July 25th gave a shoot-at-sight order for cultists to security operatives attached to Ohaji Egbema LGA where 6 persons were killed in a clash between two rival cult groups referred to as Day-Gbam and Day-Well. 

The governor gave the directive when he paid a trip to the troubled local government area, plagued with cult activities, where residents are reported to be residing in constant fear.

Liberian man infected with Ebola Virus in Lagos has reportedly died



 Yesterday the Lagos State Ministry of Health said a Liberian man will be tested for the deadly Ebola virus in Lagos (read the post here). The person, Patrick Sawyer, (pictured above) has reportedly died.  Based on reports, Patrick died yesterday night at the First Consultant Medical Centre, Obalende, Lagos where he'd been receiving treatment. His condition was said to have worsened.

Sawyer, who had been the official of the Liberian Ministry of Finance, found its way to Nigeria on Sunday July 20th for a conference.

Indian rape suspects beaten by upset mob after 7yr-old girl is found hanging from a tree



One man was killed and two others were badly hurt today by villagers in India who accused them of raping and hanging a seven-year-old girl. The girl was discovered hanging from a tree near the village of Kaliabazar, West Bengal, this morning and angry villagers quickly rounded up a local 'Tantrik' holy man and his two friends.

The trio were mercilessly beaten. One later died in hospital and the two others are still being treated.

Sheikh's son, five others killed as police & protesters clash in Zaria



About 5 people, including the son of popular Zaria based Sheikh, Ibraheem El Zakzaky, were killed today after a clash between Nigerian soldiers and Shiite Muslims in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The Shi'a Muslim group had gathered in the PZ area of the town for their annual Ramadan ritual called Muzahara, where thousands of Muslim faithful march around the city dressed in black to protest a cause. They dedicated their march today to the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

A source said the group were confronted by soldiers as they gathered after Friday prayers, chanting Islamic songs, carrying placards and condemning Israel's invasion of Gaza. The soldiers' mission was to disperse the crowd but one thing led to another and violence erupted. Shots were fired and at least 6 people were killed, including the son of the leader of the Islamic group (the son pictured above).

Ashik Gavai was brought in with a swelling in his right jaw, Dr Sunanda Dhiware, head of Mumbai's JJ Hospital's dental department. The teenager had been suffering for 18 months and travelled to the city from his village after local doctors failed to identify the cause of the problem.
Doctors eventually described his condition as "very rare" and "a world record"and diagnosed it as a complex composite odontoma where a single gum forms lots of teeth. 

Monarch, 15 others killed in Borno state



Suspected members of Boko Haram yesterday July 24th, invaded and attacked Garubula village in Biu LGA of Borno State, killing the District Head, Alhaji Ibrahim Dawi, and 11 others, the Nation reports. The sect members also invaded the homes of two members of the local vigilante group, dragged them out and took them to a river bank in Gamboru Ngala, a border town with Cameroon Republic and killed them. There are also reports that two people suspected to be a motorist and a passenger were ambushed and shot dead along the Maiduguri – Gamboru Ngala road. The Maiduguri – Gamboru Ngala road came under attack on Tuesday July 22nd by terrorists with the blowing of the bridge linking the town with Cameroon Republic.

…You’re expired politician - Okorocha Attacks Nzeribe




Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has described Senator Francis Arthur Nzeribe as an expired politician who cannot determine who governs the state in 2015.In a press statement by his Senior Special Assistant (Media), Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha said Nzeribe had never supported any governorship candidate in Imo and could not determine who won Imo governorship in 2015.


He recalled that In 1999, Nzeribe was in the defunct APP, saying his party’s governorship candidate whom he supported, Dr. Ezekiel Izuogu, failed. Chief Achike Udenwa of PDP won. Before Udenwa, he had backed the then SDP candidate “Dr. Alex Obi for the governorship and he also failed. Chief Evan Enwerem of NRC won to become the governor of the state without Chief Nzeribe.

Air Algerie flight AH5017 crash: Wreckage found in Mali as hopes fade for 116 passengers



The wreckage of the Air Algerie flight AH5017 which crashed with 116 people on board, including more than 50 French nationals, has been discovered in Mali, west Africa, officials have said.

The office of French President François Hollande confirmed the announcement, saying in a message on its website the wreckage had been clearly identified despite the disintegration of the aircraft and a French military unit has been dispatched to secure the site and gather evidence.  French investigators have now concluded the flight broke apart when it hit the ground, the Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told RTL radio.

Presidency spots errors in 2014 Pension Act • AGF retrieves law for correction, gazzeting





The 2014 Pension Act, which President Goodluck Jonathan assented to early this month, has been sent back to the Office of Attorney-General of Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice following the discovery of some errors in it, New Telegraph learnt yesterday.
A source said the AGF office was studying the law with the aim of correcting the defects which could hobble the implementation of the Pension Act, which revised the old one.

Army Retires Major Al-mustapha




The Nigerian Army has approved the voluntary retirement of the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, Blueprint reliably gathered.
The retirement has laid to rest the controversy surrounding Al-Mustapha’s return to service and purported promotion to the rank of Brigadier General in 2013 after he was freed from prison.

Blueprint gathered that the Army Council gave the approval of Al-Mustapha’s retirement based on the extant laws and condition of service in the Nigerian Armed Forces.  Sources told our correspondent that the Army Council which approves promotion and retirement of officers of the Nigerian Army based on Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service (HTACOS) approved the retirement last week.
“Al-Mustapha’s retirement was approved by the Army Council and backdated to June 2013. This means, he served the Nigerian Army for 33 years. It is a voluntary retirement,” the source said.
“Even though, by law Al-Mustapha was still in service when he was released from prison, he knew that by condition of service he no longer fitted in the army.”

Oliver Stone Questions Theories on MH17 Crash Circulating in US Media



US director Oliver Stone urged not to take for granted numerous US media reports accusing Russia of its involvement in the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.  In a statement posted on his Facebook page Stone stressed the necessity to examine alternative versions of the tragedy brought up by journalists.
“This is too good to be true. After this massive rush to judgment by US media, please read these fascinating dissents from 2 honest investigative journalists who probe deeper than our propagandizing fourth estate. This is an unnecessarily dangerous situation brewing because of US politics,” Stone said.

The use of Grad rockets in populated areas in Ukraine during fighting violates conflict laws and may constitute war crimes, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Thursday.

“The use of indiscriminate rockets in populated areas violates international humanitarian law, or the laws of war, and may amount to war crimes,” HRW said commenting on the Ukrainian crisis.

Iranian Authorities Nab US Journalist





 Iran’s chief justice Gholamhossein Esmaili confirmed the arrest of the Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian along with his wife Yeganeh Salehi, Agence France-Presse reported Friday.
“We are now in the investigation phase. I think we will be able to provide more information after technical investigation and questioning," Esmaili was quoted as saying, without naming the reasons why the couple was arrested.

Memory of MH17 Black Boxes Intact – Moscow-Based Air Disaster Investigation Body




Memory units of the crashed Malaysian Boeing’s flight recorders are in good condition and have no signs of tampering, a Moscow-based air disaster investigation body said on Friday.


“An examination revealed that flight data recorders have slight mechanical damage, which did not affect the memory chips. After the memory chips had been removed and hooked up to lab equipment, all information was successfully copied and its authenticity confirmed by experts,” said the Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK), whose expert is a member of an international group, retrieving data from the black boxes.

Malaysia accused the United States of building their foreign policy on blood and bones of Boeing-777 victims.

It seems like Malaysian authorities had enough of seeing and hearing how West is capitalizing and playing political games on blood and bones of their own citizens and harshly rebuked the US. In particular, Malaysian authorities reproached Barack Obama for his accusations towards Russia and pro-Russian rebels. 
“Malaysian PM Najib Razak has made a statement in an emergency parliamentary session regarding the “Boeing-777” tragedy” international media reports. According to the media, Malaysia deems public statements and accusations by the US government being “false and premature”.

The men whose names were given as Amos Kareem and Abubakar Ladan were arrested with human head, leg and hand in Tabira village, Okuta in Baruten LGA of the state, according to a report by Vanguard.

Liberian man in Lagos being tested for Ebola



The Lagos State Ministry of Health today July 24th said a Liberian man in his 40s is being tested for the deadly Ebola virus in Lagos.   On July 14th, the Lagos state government issued an alert to residents of the state over the deadly virus currently sweeping through some west African countries, including Liberia.  Further details on the outcome of the test is still being expected. This would be the first recorded case of one of the world's deadliest diseases in Nigeria.

Impeachment Wave rocks Maigari, the NFF president over 'financial misappropriation'



Members of the board of the Nigeria Football Federation NFF have impeached its president, Aminu Maigari, over allegations of financial misappropriation.

The members today passed a vote of no confidence on Maigari during an executive meeting to review Nigeria’s performance at the just concluded FIFA World Cup. The meeting held at the NFF Glass House Headquarters in Abuja.

Announcing the decision of the board members, Adamu Muazu who represents the North-West on the executive board, said Maigari was removed for Financial misappropriation & Mal-administration and that a more detailed statement on the allegations leveled against Mr. Maigari will soon be made public. He said a new election for the office of the President of the NFF has been slated for August 26th

Air Algeria Plane Crashes With 110 Passengers on Board [UPDATED]




An Air Algerie flight has crashed en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers with 110 passengers up to speed, almost 50% of them French citizens, officials say.  An Algerian official told Reuters the plane had crashed en rout  to Algiers, but declined to offer information on where  the plane was or what caused the accident.  Burkino Faso's transport minister Jean Bertin Ouedrago said the aircraft asked to change  route on Thursday at 1:38am GMT (11:38am AEST) as a result of storm in the area.

Bomb Blast in Kano this afternoon, many feared dead!



A Blast occurred around 3pm today at New Road Motor in the Sabongari section of Kano city, according to police sources. The explosive was hidden in a desk top fridge disguised as luggage. Information on casualties remain sketchy but eyewitnesses say scores were killed and as much as 10 people injured. Dr. Tunji Calls For Suspension Of 2015 Election Until Chibok Girls Are Released





Founder of the defunct Nigeria Advanced Party and pro-democracy activist, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, on Wednesday, said that the 2015 election should not take place unless the 223 Chibok schoolgirls still in Boko Haram captivity are released.

Dr. Braithwaite, who joined other activists at a rally held at the Event Garden in Lagos as part of activities to mark 100 days of captivity of the girls, decried the manner at which politicians go about their electioneering activities in the face of insecurity in the country.

30-year-old man nabbed for raping 2 year old girl in Ebonyi state



A 30-year old man, Mr. Inya-Okoro from Afikpo North LGA of Ebonyi State has been arrested by police for defiling a 2-year-old girl named Favour, Sunnewsonline reports 
The suspect was alleged to have com­mitted the shameful act when the victim returned from school and was sleeping at the corridor of the house when the suspect, who also lives in the same compound allegedly pounced on her and committed the crime.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr. Chris Anyanwu an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), who confirmed the incident said the suspect was arrested on July 14, 2014 at the scene of the crime when the members of the family alerted the police. Continue...

When impeachment wave blows, Enugu Deputy Gov. to be served notice for rearing chickens in Govt house



 22 out of the 24 members of the Enugu State House of Assembly yesterday July 22nd passed a resolution to serve the state deputy Governor, Sunday Onyebuchi, an impeachment notice over allegations of operating a commercial poultry farm within his official quarters in the state capital. 

According to the lawmakers, the state deputy governor's action contravenes their Feb 12 2013 resolution which 'prohibited the maintenance and operation of a commercial livestock and poultry farms within residential neighborhoods in Enugu Metropolis in promotion of public health standards'.

They say an earlier directive by the state Governor, Chime Sullivan, to have the said poultry relocated by relevant ministry officials was disobeyed by the deputy governor who afterwards resorted to inviting pressmen to castigate the Governor. Continue...

Russia Offers Help to Negotiate Gaza Truce



Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday offered help to mediate a truce between the armed Palestinian group Hamas and Israel, which has expanded its military campaign in the Gaza Strip by launching a ground offensive.
Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed in a phone call the ongoing Israeli offensive against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip that so far has killed more than 600 Palestinians, including at least 152 children and 82 women.
“The Russian president stressed that continued military action in the Gaza Strip is leading to a dramatic deterioration of the humanitarian situation, to deaths and suffering of civilians,” the Kremlin said in a statement.
