 Prominent civil rights attorney, Bamidele Aturu, who died on July 9th has been laid to rest. He was buried today July 25th in his country-home of Ogbagi Akoko, Ondo State. See more pics after the Jump.

Human Rights Lawyer Festus Keyamo Denied SAN Award



It always takes the grace of Eledumare for any lawyer who criticises government's atrocities to be made a SAN and this trend has been ongoing for an extended time. Not surprised! Barrister Festus Keyamo was shortlisted for the SAN award along side others but the ultimate list has been released and his name is conspicuously absent.

 LPPC Secretary and Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Mr Sunday Olorundahunsi, while addressing news men in Abuja, gave out the names of people who made the list. See the ultimate list below after the break.

Human Rights lawyer assassinated in his home in Lagos



Human rights lawyer and social commentator, Barrister Kunle Fadipe (pictured above) was on July 3rd  murdered at his residence at Harmony Estate near Karaole Estate, College Road in Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos.
 
In accordance with reports, the estate where in fact the late barrister lived was plunged into total darkness after power outage and the lawyer asked his son to go and start the generator. As his son made his way to the generator, a person armed with a blade accosted him and ordered him to take him to his father. When the person surely got to Mr Fadipe, he stabbed him in the neck and back. His daughter who was in the home immediately ran out of the home and asked for help. Two security officials mounted on the estate immediately ran there and was able overpower the killer.Continue..

'White Book' of human rights' violations in Ukraine is 'invitation to act' - Moscow



The Russian Foreign Ministry's White Book on large-scale human rights violations in Ukraine is not "a propaganda product" but an invitation to the international community to act, the Foreign Ministry's human rights ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov told the Rossiya-24 television channel on Wednesday.

"We have seen reaction to the White Book yet," Dolgov said. "Some partners are trying to present all this as a propaganda product. But we have facts, and facts cannot be regarded as propaganda."

The activist and lawyer was kidnapped yesterday afternoon, around 3:30pm at Ehor near Ekpoma in Edo State. The four policemen who were with him were killed on the spot.

JA: It's both. I mean the surveillance infrastructure, the bulk surveillance infrastructure – there are hundreds of companies involved in that business. They have secret international conferences, they have prospectuses that they give to intelligence agencies that we have obtained and published this year together with Privacy International and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Also, The Wall Street Journal has done some good work on this. They are building devices that they advertise to intercept entire nations, to install the data from those intercepts permanently – strategic interception, because it's cheaper.
