49 people reportedly killed as Lugansk self-defense forces down Ukrainian military plane

There is information that 49 Ukrainian troops could have been killed in attack by insurgents on a Ukrainian military-transport plane Il-76, which occurred when the plane was landing in Luhansk, Vladislav Seleznyov, the head of the group in charge of reporting on the military operation, said. "The lists are now being checked. Precise information will be available after the search and rescue group completes its work. Fifty-nine people are feared dead," he told Interfax on Saturday morning.

Russia’s anti-missile radars register two ballistic launches in Mediterranean – Defense Ministry

Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has reported to President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday that the country's missile detection system had registered two launches of ballistic missiles in the Mediterranean region. The missiles have been fired from the Sea's eastern coastline. The launches took place at 10:16 am Moscow time (06:16 GMT) and were detected by the early warning system in Armavir in southern Russia, the defence ministry said in a statement quoted by Russian news agencies. The event comes amid growing expectations of Western military action in Syria. Syria’s embassy in Moscow said it had no information on the nature of the ballistic launches.

Jonathan appoints new CDS, naval, air force chiefs

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday appointed Vice Admiral Ola Ibrahim as the new Chief of Defence Staff.

A statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said Ibrahim (Kwara State), who until his elevation was the Chief of Naval Staff, took over from Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin, who has retired from service.

Jonathan also appointed Rear Admiral Dele Joseph Ezeoba from Delta State as the new Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh as the new Chief of Air Staff.

He, however, retained Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (Abia) as the Chief of Army Staff.
