As  Aregbesola, Sagay, others  proffer solution on how to make LGs functional
LAGOS—ONE thought dominated the comments of discussants on how to make local councils in Nigeria effective at a forum in Lagos Tuesday:   There is so much rot in the councils and decisive actions are needed to make them deliver democracy dividends.
However, the discussants were divided on how to ensure effective governance at the grassroots. While some asked the National Assembly to remove the Local Councils as a tier of government and tie them to the states in line with the dictates of classical federalism, others said the councils should be allowed to operate as currently enshrined in the 1999 constitution.

Man who raped girlfriend’s baby death claims he was too drunk to realize he was killing her

Condemned killer Steven Smith's argument for mercy isn't an easy one. Smith acknowledges he intended to sexually assault his girlfriend's 6-month-old daughter but says he never intended to kill the baby.

The girl, Autumn Carter, of Mansfield, died because Smith was too drunk to realize his sexual assault was killing the child, Smith's attorneys were telling the Ohio Parole Board on Tuesday. And Ohio law is clear, they say: a death sentence requires an intent to kill the victim.
"The evidence suggests that Autumn's death was a horrible accident," his attorneys, Joseph Wilhelm and Tyson Fleming, said in a written argument prepared for the board.

I was at the Villa …for the Eagles

AFTER a nineteen year wait, nothing  would have stopped me from the Presidential reception planned fo the Eagles last Tuesday in Abuja. In company of my colleague Aisha Falode, we left Lagos Tuesday afternoon and by the time we got to Abuja airport we needed no one to tell us that something pregnant was in the air.
President Jonathan with the Afcon trophy pose with
Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi at the reception
The airport arrival area was filled to the brim with Nigerians of all walks of life, anxious to catch a glimpse of their heroes. Journalists came in great number and some of them misinterpreted our presence to mean the Eagles had landed and rushed towards us, knowing that we were in South Africa and must have come back with the team.

Part 1: Auchi Bank Robbery Operations "How The Attack Was Hatched"

It was a well planned operation  by  bandits. The dare-devil robbers, numbering about 50, stormed Auchi, Edo State, in  a bus and three Camry cars loaded with dynamites and bombs. They unleashed mayhem on  three new generation banks and one old generation bank. As it seemed, the robbers were familiar with Auchi, buttressing the argument by many that they may have been in town for about two weeks plotting this attack. They started the attack around  6:30 pm when security operatives were either praying in the mosques or handing over to those on night shift.
