Expert Says Nigerian Education Curriculum Responsible For Unemployment




The Founder of the Centre for Applied Thinking, Josefu Adeyeni on Wednesday said the Nigerian Educational curriculum is structured in a way that graduates are prepared to be job seekers rather than job creators.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, Mr Adeyeni said the Nigerian educational system is using the 20th century curriculum to prepare 21st century people.
He said though the Bloom’s Taxonomy, which guided the curriculum structure in Nigeria education and was prepared in 1956, was revised in 2001, the country still use the old version which emphasised preparation for job after graduation.

Fracas In Ogun Assembly as Lawmakers Break Into Pandemonium



There was pandemonium in the hallow chamber of the Ogun State House of Assembly yesterday following attempts by the Speaker, Hon. Suraj Ishola Adekunbi, to suspend four members for allegedly infringing on the House rules.
The uproar witnessed on the floor of the House, which resulted in the breaking of the mace, was as a result of the crisis rocking the Assembly over the composition of members of the tenders’ board.
At the plenary yesterday, the Speaker, recalled an alleged unruly behaviour of four lawmakers during the previous sitting.
Adekunbi noted that four members- Hon. Job Akintan (Egbado North II); Hon. Remmy Hazzan (Odogbolu); Hon. Adijat Adeleye-Oladapo (Ifo II); and Hon. John Obafemi (Remo North); all walked out on all other members without taking a bow at the previous sitting.

FG Set To Clamp Down On Satellite Campuses – Education Minister





Education Minister, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, has said that the Federal Government would take serious action against the activities of Nigerians operating satellite campuses.
Speaking in Kaduna, on Monday, at the consultative meeting between the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education and Rectors of Polytechnics and Provost of Colleges of Education in the country, Rufai noted that the government would soon clamp down on those operating the satellite campuses and outreach centres.

Reps move to criminalise late, non-payment of salaries





A new bill before the House of Representatives has proposed stiff penalties for employers of labour in both the public and private sectors who fail to pay or delay the payment of workers’ salaries.
The bill passed second reading on Tuesday, getting the support of the majority of lawmakers at a session presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal.
It also proposes that underpayment of workers’ wages; pension and emolument will attract sanctions.
According to the sponsor of the bill and House Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, the penalties will include the loss of 10 to 20 per cent of the value of the delayed salary.

Cisco rakes $750m from Nigeria, others on services




NIGERIA'S robust market was confirmed in South Africa Tuesday where Cisco, a United States (U.S.)-based networking firm announced a yearly revenue of $750 million from its operation in Nigeria and other African countries.
The company, which said, about $1.7 billion could be generated from African market offering the same services, also stressed that South Africa, Nigeria and Egypt constitutes about 63 per cent of the continent’s potential market.
According to the company, seven countries represent 80 per cent of Africa’s total addressable market (TAM). The are Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Libya among others.

Nigerian Police make mass arrest over Kwara CP’s murder



The Enugu State Police Command on Tuesday said it had raided criminals’ hideouts and made random arrests in its investigations of the murder of Kwara State police commissioner, Mr. Chinweike Asadu, last Saturday.
    The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Tonye Ebitibituwa, who announced the arrests declined giving the number and identity of those arrested. The PUNCH  however learnt from residents of Nike in the Enugu metropolis, where the late police boss was gunned down, that over 500 youths of the area had been picked.
     A resident of the area, who refused to give his name for fear of police harassment, said, “All the youths in this area have been arrested and detained in many police stations in the state. Over 500 persons have been arrested in this area.”

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez dies




A deeply divided Venezuela is mourning its late leader and preparing to pick a new president to replace him.
Venezuelan officials called for peace and unity after President Hugo Chavez's death on Tuesday, emphasizing in state television broadcasts that all branches of the government and the military were standing together.
Elections will be held in 30 days, and Vice President Nicolas Maduro will assume the presidency in the interim, Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said in an interview broadcast on state-run VTV.
Tearing up as he announced Chavez's death after a long battle with cancer, Maduro called on Venezuelans to remain respectful.

Nigerians remained indebted to Obasanjo, says Jonathan



Abuja – President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 76th birthday.
This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Dr Reuben Abati.
The statement quoted the president as saying that Nigerians remained indebted to Obasanjo for his efforts at ensuring peace, stability and development of the country.

Ketu, Lagos: Two Missing Kids Suffocated Inside a Vehicle




Ketu area of Lagos State was thrown into confusion after the shocking discovery of the corpses of two toddlers, Toheeb Adedokun and Tajudeen Falilu, who disappeared in January.
The missing children were suspected to have been kidnapped when all efforts to locate them proved abortive.
However, the corpses of the children were found in an abandoned vehicle, two houses away from their parents' home on Taike Street.

CHILD ABUSE: Father ties, locks up six-year-old daughter for witchcraft ( PHOTO)




A 42-year-old father, Mr. Edet Etok-Akpan, is currently being quizzed at the headquarters of the Cross River State Police Command in Calabar for torturing his six-year-old daughter, Edidiong, as a result of a church prophetess’ pronouncement that the girl was a witch.
Edidiong was beaten by her father and locked up in a room with her hands, mouth and face bound for four days before she was rescued by neighbours.
It was learnt that Etok-Akpan started beating her on February 19 after an unidentified prophetess in their church told him that Edidiong was the witch responsible for the stagnancy in his life.

A heartbroken mum has revealed how her premature son was tragically killed — by a loving kiss from his doting dad.
Little Kaiden McCormick was struck down by a cold sore virus caught from Carl Maclaren, 34.
He spent six weeks on a life-support machine as doctors worked frantically to save him.
But he died aged just two months. The cause of death was multiple organ failure triggered by the herpes simplex virus.

The couple who just returned from abroad were badly burnt, and were seen clung to each other in the bathroom of the building.

''Batman'' Brings In Suspect To Police - BBC



A man dressed as the caped crusader Batman has handed over a wanted man at a Bradford police station before disappearing into the night.
Police said the costumed man did not reveal his identity.  Police said the costumed crime-fighter marched the 27-year-old man into Trafalgar House Police Station in the early hours of 25 February.
The man was charged with handling stolen goods and fraud offences. Police said: "The person who brought the man in was dressed in a full Batman outfit. His identity remains unknown."
The suspect will appear before Bradford magistrates on Friday, police said.

A mother and her son have done the unthinkable – they have fallen in love with one another. And now they want to marry since the mom, is six months pregnant and expecting her son’s first child.

Mbereko (40), who was widowed 12 years ago, has been cohabiting with her first child, Farai Mbereko (23). She confirms that she is six months pregnant and that she has decided it is better to “marry” her son because she does not want to marry her late husband’s young brothers, whom she says are coveting her.
