Navy parades four pirates in Lagos



The Nigerian Navy on Tuesday paraded four suspected sea robbers who had allegedly hijacked a barge (huge boat) MV Crow, on August 14, 2013 at Escravos River located on the Gulf of Guinea. The PUNCH had reported that the men of the Nigerian Navy killed some sea robbers during a 30-minute gun duel on August 16.

Primaries: Jonathan not afraid of Lamido, says Presidency



The Presidency on Tuesday said President Goodluck Jonathan was not afraid to contest the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential ticket with Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State in 2015.

ASUU strike: FG to meet varsity councils, VCs



The Federal Government  will before Sunday meet with  university councils and vice-chancellors   to  update  them on some of the decisions it had reached in its bid to end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The Chairman of the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy Assessment Implementation Committee of the universities, Governor Gabriel Suswam, made this known on Tuesday  after President Goodluck Jonathan met behind closed doors  with key officials of his administration  over  the almost two months’ old strike.

I'm Not Afraid Of Governor Lamido; Says President Jonathan



The Presidency on Tuesday said President Goodluck Jonathan is not afraid to contest the PDP’s presidential ticket with Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State in 2015, as is been speculated.
“We have gone to Jigawa State. We have seen what he has done. Go to Jigawa State, you will see it yourself. Jigawa State is the only state you will go in this country and you will get tap water to drink. You don’t need to go and buy pure water,” said a group working for Lamido to defeat Jonathan in PDP.
But the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, stated in an interview with one of Punch's correspondents that the President is not afraid of the action governor.

Upset Youth takes on House Of Rep. Member In Katsina, Accuse Him Of Neglect



A member of the House of Representatives representing Malumfashi/Kafur constituency of Katsina state, Hon Ibrahim Babangida Mahuta, was attacked by a mob in his constituency.

This is the third time the lawmaker has been attacked by youths from his constituency. The first being during the last public hearings on constitution amendments.Mahuta, who was elected on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) was attacked at Masari village where he had gone to attend the wedding of the daughter of former House of Representatives speaker, Aminu Bello Masari.

WAEC Office Stormed as Teachers Protest in Benue



Teachers stormed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) office in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, on August 19, 2013, Monday. The operation of the examination body has been completely paralysed due to the protest.

The teachers claimed that the state’s WAEC office in Makurdi owes them two months allowances because they had marked this year’s examination papers. According to them, their colleagues from other states across the country have since been paid the allowances.

After taking care of her children and husband, Elder Frederick Ike, she set out on a journey of no return. Deaconess Ike, who hailed from Obiaruku, in Kwale, Delta State, left her Byazhin Across, Kubwa, Abuja home at about 8.30 a.m. for her shop in the village market where she was selling Nigerian prints and Hollandis.

Electrician shot and killed by Nigerian Police in Lagos

LAGOS — Pandemonium broke out in Aka Town, Iba Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Lagos State, yesterday, after an electrician, Mr. Adamson Bello, was allegedly shot dead by a yet to be identified policeman attached to the South Bound Hotel.
The incident which occurred at about 9:00 pm on Sunday at the hotel, located at 5, Elias Lane threw the entire town into mourning, as many were yet to come to terms with the reality  that Adamson, who was popularly called Baba Fasilat, could be shot dead innocently.

Victim killed in error: Untrained OPC member kills socialite during gun salute



The police have commenced  investigations into the murder of a 72-year-old man, Alhaji Abdulkareem Kadiru, in Ijora Badia area of Lagos State.
According to the police, the victim was killed in error by an Oodua Peoples Congress member, Ismaila Rahmon, who was in charge of security at a school where a Ramadan event took place.
Rahman allegedly killed the Alhaji with a gun he seized from an armed robber but failed to turn it over to the police.

WASTE: ₦1tn spent on N’Assembly members in eight years – Ezekwesili



A former Minister of Education, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili,  on Monday said Nigeria had spent over  1tn on  the National Assembly members   in the last eight years.
Ezekwesili, in a keynote address she delivered during one-day dialogue session on the ‘Cost of governance in Nigeria, “ added that  banks earned N699bn as interests last year  on loans secured by the government.

 “Since 2005, the National Assembly members alone have been allocated N1tr,’’she said while also lamenting that “82 per cent of Nigeria’s budgetary cost goes for recurrent expenditure.”

GEJ did not sign any single-term package, Presidency contends



The Presidency on Monday insisted that President Goodluck Jonathan did not sign any agreement with any individual or group that he would serve just one term in office.  The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, said this in a interview with certainly one of our correspondents in Abuja.
Gulak was reacting to a statement credited to the spokesman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Anthony Sani, on Monday.
Sani had said  that the crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party will be resolved if Jonathan respected agreements he entered into with stakeholders prior to the 2011 elections.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to beware of some of his aides who are confusing him and making more enemies for him in the pretext of doing their jobs.
“Obasanjo did not mince words in telling President Jonathan the bitter truth. He told him clearly to beware of some of his aides who are making life difficult for him through their unguarded utterances that are making more enemies for him”.
He also advised Jonathan to start running an inclusive government so as to douse tension in the ruling PDP.
