WAEC Office Stormed as Teachers Protest in Benue

Teachers stormed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) office in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, on August 19, 2013, Monday. The operation of the examination body has been completely paralysed due to the protest.

The teachers claimed that the state’s WAEC office in Makurdi owes them two months allowances because they had marked this year’s examination papers. According to them, their colleagues from other states across the country have since been paid the allowances.

The protesting teachers, who marched to the WAEC office located along Government House Road, carried placards and documents which showed that they were truly being owed the allowances. The duration of the protest was at least three hours.

No acts of violence reported during the protest. The participants insisted that the authorities of the branch office must address them over the matter. It was reported that no official activities were allowed during the period of the protest as the aggrieved teachers blocked the main gate to WAEC the premises. According to WAEC officials, vehicles were prevented from driving into the premises.  The WAEC officials also informed that the efforts are being made to clear the allowances.
