''Nigeria On The Brink Of Another Civil War'' - Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, yesterday, warned that Nigeria was on the brink of another civil war and called for concerted actions to prevent the disaster.
Soyinka, who spoke at the 5th Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Colloquium in Lagos, also chided President Goodluck Jonathan for failing to address the deteriorating level of insecurity in the country.
Themed: A national movement for change. A new generation speaks,” the colloquium was held at the MUSON Centre, Lagos.
He said: “Let us face it; this nation is on the brinks. Those who do understand it, I feel very sorry for them because they will one day wake up and find out that we have fallen as a nation. This is not what we envisaged when we struggled for independence. This is not what we envisaged when we struggled to overthrow military dictatorship and restore the rights and dignity of human beings. But whether we like it or not, it has come upon us.”

Murder Of Pipeline Defence Guards: Covering Their Tracks, Police in Lagos Beat ‘Confession’ Out of NSCDC Officer

The Police in Lagos have forced Olanrenju Gbedeogun, an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to make a statement that contradicts yesterday’s events where the police attacked officers of the corps, killed two of its officers, and freed some oil pipeline vandals.

Sources at the Owutu Police Station in Ikorodu, Lagos State, informed SaharaReporters that the police authorities embarked on the measure to back-up their claim to the presidency that it was officers of NSCDC which attacked the police, and that the police knew nothing about the death of the two NSCDC men.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police is said to have personally supervised the forced video confession of Gbedeogun.
Earlier in the day, we learned that Gbedeogun was being tortured by the police to force him to provide the contradiction of the corps’ account of yesterday’s events.
A police officer at the Owutu Police Station who felt bad about the latest developments told us on condition of anonymity that if care was not taken urgently Gbedeogun would be dead before daybreak.  By that time, the torture victim had already spent over 24hrs in detention, contrary to the law.

Chasing the Ghosts of a Corrupt Regime Gilbert Chagoury, Clinton donor and diplomat with a checkered past.

In July 2004, police lay in wait at an airfield in the far northeastern corner of Nigeria. Gilbert Chagoury, a Lebanese businessman and one-time adviser to the late dictator Sani Abacha, was set to touch down in his private jet. Nuhu Ribadu, then the country's top anti-corruption prosecutor, says that Chagoury was a kingpin in the corruption that defined Abacha's regime.
"You couldn't investigate corruption without looking at Chagoury," Ribadu tells me in a recent interview in California.
Six years after Abacha's death, Ribadu's officers stood ready to take Chagoury down. Ribadu says that Chagoury made it possible for Abacha to steal billions of dollars and lined his own pockets in the process. The prosecutor says he indicted Chagoury and ordered his arrest for relatively minor violations related to Chagoury's businesses so that he could later bring additional charges for his activities in the Abacha era.

But, no sooner had Chagoury's plane hit the ground, than it took off again. Ribadu says it's likely that an airport official tipped him off, and Ribadu's big catch slipped away, literally into thin air.
Chagoury was among the last of the all-powerful middlemen who served the heads of oil-rich African states, says Philippe Vasset, longtime editor of Africa Energy Intelligence, one of a series of influential energy industry newsletters. "He [Chagoury] was the gatekeeper to Abacha's presidency," Vasset says.
In many African countries, a Western entrepreneur might hand over money to a fixer or middleman, who would then pass it on to a political leader in exchange for support for a business venture. In Nigeria, Vasset explains, Chagoury was just such a figure in the mid-1990s, when Abacha ruled the country and held the key to much of the country's oil wealth.

Northern Elders To Jonathan: Get Ready For A Unified North In 2015

The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) has sounded a warning to President Goodluck Jonathan, telling him that he would have to contend with a unified north should he insist on seeking another term in 2015.
NEF spokesman, Prof  Ango Abdullahi, gave this warning yesterday in Kaduna during an exclusive interview with our correspondent.
Commenting on why the north is putting its act together in order to present a formidable team, Abdullahi said, “We are trying now to unify our people (northerners) that have been divided along ethnic and religious lines in the last two years.
And very soon you will hear the north talking from one platform.

Kano: JTF Discovers Three ‘Bomb Factories,’ Arrests Nine

Security operatives in Kano say they have discovered three suspected bomb factories in Sharada, Gaida Ajawa on the Eastern Bye-pass and Mariri, and impounded a large consignment of arms and ammunition.  Three members of the Islamic Extremist group were arrested.
The spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Captain Ikedichi Iweha, said in a press statement in Kano today that the three buildings, which were found in three separate raids, were demolished, adding that they served as bomb factories for the terrorist group.

Among those arrested, he disclosed, was the sect’s bomb making specialist, who was nabbed at the Farm Centre.
The dangerous weapons intercepted during the raid, according to Captain Iweha, included six AK 47 rifles, General Purpose machine guns, SMG magazine, PPK pistol, two smoke guns and 189 rounds of AK 47 ammunition.

Aurora Theater Shooting Court Documents Blows Inside Job Conspiracy Wide Open

Newly released court documents in the Aurora, CO theater “Batman massacre” case reveals startling inside accusations about who may actually be behind the shootings that left at least 70 people either dead or injured in the early morning hours of July 20th.

Friday’s report by the online version of Denver’s Westword Magazine details shocking claims made by, what appears to be, a new victim in a case that has throttled a community still in mourning over the tragic events. According to the court documents an individual, whose name has been officially redacted from the documents, came forward to file a “Motion to Intervene” for the right to be reasonably heard under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act (a)(4), for the purposes of presenting newly discovered evidence to the court.

An Ikeja High Court on Wednesday ordered Akolade Arowolo’s lawyer, Mr. Olanrewaju Ajanaku, to pay a fine of N2, 500 for delaying his (Arowolo) murder trial.
Ajanaku had prayed the court on January 29, 2013 to adjourn the case to enable him to produce the witnesses at a later date.

Imo Deputy Governor Impeached

Barely hours after the High Court dismissed the suit by the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Mr. Jude Agbaso, asking it to stop his impeachment by the state Assembly, the embattled deputy governor has been removed from office.

Twenty-five out of the 26 members of the Imo State House of Assembly approved the impeachment.

His impeachment is coming after a prolonged battle over the allegation that he demanded the sum of N417 million from a contractor in the state. Mr. Agbaso has consistently denied the allegation.

Mr. Agbaso had earlier approached the court praying it to restrain the state lawmakers from proceeding with the impeachment process which began three weeks ago.

He also prayed the court to restrain the Nigerian Police from harassing him or acting upon the recommendations of the House of Assembly against him.

NIGERIAN POLICE: BRITISH HOSTAGE TAKEN IN #NIGERIA RELEASED

A police spokeswoman in Nigeria says a British man kidnapped from the country's largest city has been released.
Lagos state police spokeswoman Ngozi Braide told The Associated Press on Thursday that the man had been freed by his captors Tuesday. Braide said she did not know whether a ransom had been paid.
A spokesman for the British High Commission in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, confirmed the man had been released but offered no details.
Kidnappings of foreigners remain common in Nigeria, either for political reasons or for cash ransoms. However, such kidnappings rarely occur in Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria. The abduction came as Nigeria faces increasing insecurity with extremist attacks across its north.

S.A : MANDELA IN HOSPITAL WITH LUNG INFECTION

Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader who became South Africa's first black president, has been admitted to a hospital with a recurring lung infection, South Africa said Thursday.
Mandela, 94, has become increasingly frail in recent years and has been hospitalized several times since last year, most recently earlier this month when he underwent what a presidential spokesman described as a "successful" medical test. The Nobel laureate is a revered figure in South Africa, which has honored his legacy of reconciliation by naming buildings and other places after him and printing his image on national banknotes.
"I'm so sorry. I'm sad," said Obed Mokwana, a Johannesburg resident. "I just try to pray all the time. He must come very strong again."

2 Nigerian girls seek Pres. Jonathan's intervention from deportation from Canada

Got this email from Funmi Macaulay, a US-born Nigerian presently living in Brooklyn, NYC, and the founder of Nigerians Unite Against Boko Haram (NUABH). She wrote an article about the plight of Ihuoma and Victoria, two young Nigerians living and studying in Canada who are on the verge of being deported back to Nigeria. The two girls have been holed up in a church basement the last nine months and . See Funmi's article below.
I am surprised that I have not read in any media, local or international, about efforts by the Nigerian government to help two Nigerian students who have been on deportation list in Canada for a 'crime' that makes mockery of the very ideals that western societies proud themselves on - hard work. Victoria Ordu and Ihuoma Amadi, 20 and 21 respectively, having been holed up in the basement of a church in Canada - not for document forgery. No, not for 419, internet scam or fake marriage, but for attempting to work and earn decent stipends to augment what they get from home.
See the rest after the break...

2015 ELLECTION: Jonathan to retain Sambo as running mate

In the face of plot against Vice-President Namadi Sambo by some vested interests in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, President Goodluck Jonathan has foreclosed dropping him as running mate in the 2015 elections.
As such, those lobbying to replace Sambo as running mate to President Jonathan may be disappointed after all.
In the past weeks, Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema has been pushing to be named as a replacement for Sambo in the 2015 presidential election. A source in the Presidency told National Mirror that Shema has enlisted the support of the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadhome, in pushing the agenda.

Check Out 10 Signs She Wants You To Ask Her Out

Sometimes it’s hard to know if a girl is sending you signals to ask her out, or if she is just friendly, or is actually obsessed with your friend, or what. But watch closely for these cues, because if she’s throwing them at you, it means she’s probably hoping you ask her out.
So just work up the courage to do it and do it. Godspeed!
1. She starts liking something random you like after you mentioned you liked it. Oh, what’s that? She likes Neko Case all of the sudden? Wowza, what a huge coincidence. She knows all about the Manchester United game even though two days ago she knew shit about soccer? Holy smokes. She knows all about the new Kid Cudi album that just dropped after you were just saying how excited you were about it? Yeah, these aren’t coincidences, so don’t overlook them. Don’t make her feel dumb by saying, “Oh please you said you hate soccer!”
