Bringing of Russian troops to Ukraine would be "grave mistake" - US national security adviser



US President Barack Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, said on Sunday it would be a "grave mistake" for Russia to send military forces into Ukraine and that it is not in the interest of Russia, Europe or the United States to see Ukraine split apart.

Speaking on the NBC program "Meet the Press," Rice was asked about a possible scenario in which Russia would send forces into Ukraine to restore a government more friendly to Moscow.
"That would be a grave mistake. It's not in the interests of Ukraine or of Russia or of Europe or the United States to see a country split.

New Ukrainian leader declares determination to cooperate with Russia



Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Alexander Turchinov, who received temporary presidential powers on Sunday, declared determination to cooperate with Russia in a TV message to the Ukrainian people.

He pointed out that relations with Russia should be based on equality and good-neighbourliness, on recognizing and respecting Ukraine’s European option.
Turchinov said that the Ukrainian government’s main targets are economic recovery and focus on European integration.

A female lawyer based in Calabar Cross River State, Florence Ujinka, was picked up and interrogated by the police for torturing her 13 year old househelp, Chidera Asonye Nathaniel. Florence is reported to have used an old fan belt to inflict marks on young Chidera.

The woman was reported to the police by a Child Rights Group called Basic Rights Counsel Initiative in Calabar, who revealed that since the woman and her husband brought Chidera from Anambra state to Calabar in 2012 to serve as their househelp, Mrs Ujinka had repeatedly subjected the young boy to torture and inhuman treatment.
"Mrs Florence Ujinka has been subjecting Chidera to inhuman and degrading treatment by torturing him with an automobile fan belt and in the process inflicting him with severe wounds on his body”. The group said

ChannelsTV reports that customers of the Kano emirate called Dabo Household Women Association gathered to celebrate the suspension of the CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido.
The Members of the Kano emirate called Dabo Family Women Association have gathered to celebrate the suspension of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor, Sanusi Lamido. 
Addressing a news conference at the Emir’s palace on Saturday, a family member, Hajia Binta Sanusi, said that the suspension was “an honour done to their son who served his country truthfully and was later rewarded with mischievous allegations”.

Gunmen kidnap EFCC's suspect within Lagos court premises.



Four gunmen yesterday Thursday February 20, abducted an alleged serial fraudster and suspect in two cases being handled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Find the EFCC press release signed by Wilson Uwujaren Ag. Head, Media & Publicity Unit on the abduction below.
The suspect, Princewill Arinze Nwobodo (alias Aboki J. Brown pictured above) was abducted by the gunmen within the precincts of the Lagos High Court, Igbosere where he was to be arraigned before Justice Aishat Opesanwo on a 4-count charge bordering on obtaining $ 92,000(Ninety-Two Thousand United States Dollar) under false pretense. The arraignment was deferred to March 27, 2014 as the court did not sit.

Watch Arowolo burst into tears, calling Jesus after he was sentenced to death by hanging




After he was sentence to death by hanging by an Ikeja High Court, sitting in Lagos State, Mr Akolade Arowolo burst into tears and began to pray. 


While delivering her judgment on Friday, the presiding judge, Justice Lateefa Okunnu, held that even though there was no eyewitness to the incident, the circumstantial evidence adduced by the prosecution had proved the murder charge against the convict beyond all reasonable doubt.

Mr Arowolo had denied the allegation, insisting that the deceased wife mistakenly killed herself with the knife she wanted to stab him with when they were having a quarrel.

Tymoshenko tells Kiev protesters to keep up protests



Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko urged President Viktor Yanukovich's opponents on Saturday not to abandon their protests in central Kiev even though parliament has voted to oust him. 
In an emotional speech to thousands of protesters in Kiev's Independence Square after she was carried to the stage in a wheelchair, she said: "You have no right to leave Maidan (square)... Don't stop yet".

Partner monster Akolade Arowolo found guilty of murder, bags death sentence



Arowolo Akolade, the man who stabbed his banker wife to death on Friday June 24, 2011 after a domestic dispute at their home in Isolo, Lagos (read the story here), has been found guilty of her murder and has been sentenced to death.

Akolade appeared before trial judge Justice Lateefat Okunnu of the Ikeja High Court this morning Friday Feb. 21 and was found guilty on one-count of murder. The judge said the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that he killed his wife.

Turkish riot police fire tear gas on protest over Internet curbs



Turkish riot police in Istanbul fired tear gas and water cannon Saturday at thousands of people protesting new legislation tightening control of the Internet. Police took action to push protesters away from the city's Taksim Square, a focal rally point, media report.

Protesters responded by hurling fireworks at police, who detained dozens of people, according to media reports. The controversial law came into effect last Wednesday after it was signed into effect by the Turkish President Abdullah Gul despite repeated calls for veto.

Lagos governor, Babatunde Fashola, Approves The Reopening Of LASU




Lagos governor, Babatunde Fashola, has approved the reopening of the Lagos State University (LASU) which had been shut down in the last four weeks following a protest by students over the closing of the school’s registration portal by the authorities as well as hike in school fees.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr Hakeem Bello, and made available to newsmen on Friday in Ikeja, the governor said the reopening was in the interest of students and in compliance with the recommendation of the state House of Assembly Ad-hoc Committee on the recent disturbances in the school.
