Dignitaries from around the world have gathered in South Africa to bid a final farewell to Nelson Mandela at his state funeral. The Prince of Wales has joined some 4,000 people at the service for South Africa's first African president, along with Mr Mandela's family unit members, African leaders and several heads of state. It marks the finish of 1st week of memorial events for the anti-apartheid hero which may have attracted 1000s of South Africans and world leaders.

In a letter to the President of Nigeria, the Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi alleged that the NNPC didn't remit a total of 49.8 billion dollars in to the Federation Account between January 2012 and July 2013.

The news of this enormous sum missing from the State's coffers is coming on the heels of accussations against the Federal Government and its purported calm disposition towards corruption in government agencies.

EFCC Mad at Bode George, others’ release



THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has described as “unfortunate” that the Supreme Court set aside the court judgment that jailed former chairman of the board of  Nigerian Ports Authority, Chief Olabode George and five former members.  The five directors of the NPA whose sentensing was also quashed are Aminu Dabo, Captain Oluwasegun Abidoye, Alhaji Abdullahi Tafida, Alhaji Zanna Maidaribe and Sule Aliyu, an Engineer.
The apex court discharged and acquitted them of corruption, inflation of contracts and contracts splitting, for which they had been convicted after prosecution by the anti-graft agency.  George, a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, was the NPA chairman between 2001 and 2003 when the alleged offences were said to have been committed.

The controversial letter Chief Olusegun Obasanjo wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan has continued to generate ripples with a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Buruji Kashamu alleging that the former president took on the president for selfish reasons.

Obasanjo had in an 18-page letter dated December 2, 2013 accused President Jonathan of taking actions detrimental to the unity and progress of the country.

Chinese firms sign ₦117,280,000,000 ($733m) cement deal in Nigeria, Myanmar




Two Chinese firms, Sinoma and CITIC Heavy Industries, have agreed deals totalling $733m to produce cement in Nigeria and Myanmar, respectively, as they expand in emerging markets overseas.

Reuters reported that Sinoma International Engineering Company Limited, a unit of China National Materials Company Limited, signed a $536m contract with Nigeria’s Dangote Cement Plc, Sinoma and National Materials said in separate statements on Thursday.

U.S., Chinese warships narrowly prevent collision in South China Sea



WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A U.S. guided missile cruiser operating in international waters in the South China Sea was forced to take evasive action last week to avoid a collision with a Chinese navy ship maneuvering nearby, the U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement on Friday.

The incident on December 5 involving the USS Cowpens came at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and China following Beijing’s declaration of an Air Defense Identification Zone in the East China Sea.

25 killed as Army, Boko Haram clash in Borno



No fewer than 25 people suspected to be members of Boko Haram sect were killed, Thursday, in a clash with troops of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army at Ngauramari villages of Bama Local Government Area of Borno state.

Ngauramari is a small farming community along the Maiduguri- Bama – Firgi-Gwoza federal highway which had witnessed series of attacks and killing of over 20 motorists and passengers this week by suspected terrorists.

Speaking at a tribute event for Nelson Mandela in Lagos on Friday, Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi said the reason political office holders steal is because citizens let them.

"Even the musicians, you're singing about us, the leaders? If you see a thief and you allow him to be stealing, what do you do? You have stoned nobody that's why we are stealing. Who have you stoned? We came out and you started dancing, the oil subsidy, we told you they stole N2.3trillion, what did you do? Instead you're protesting. The oil subsidy that is not reaching the poor, few individuals are going away with the money, you have done nothing, you are mourning Madiba, 95 years.

Nelson Mandela was buried today December 15th at his ancestral home in Qunu after a four-hour state funeral service today that has been attended by 5,000 people including Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson and Prince Charles   There was a fly-past and 21-gun salute as his body was lowered in to the ground. 


Leader of Bratstvo party declared internationally wanted - Ukraine's Interior Ministry



Dmitry Korchynsky, the leader of the radical Bratstvo (Brotherhood) party, has been declared internationally wanted.

"I am sure that this person's whereabouts will be established shortly and due measures will be taken," chief of the ministry's criminal search department Vasyl Paskal has said.
"We also have reports saying that individual members of Korchynsky's organization - 15 people - lived in his office. He used these individuals during most radical actions," the official said.

As the Presidency prepares a reply to the 18-page letter written by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan on the state of the nation, indications emerged, yesterday, that the former leader was not expecting any reply but action from Jonathan.

A competent source told Sunday Vanguard that Obasanjo was more
interested in Jonathan addressing the core issues he raised in his letter rather than getting a reply to his damning missive, entitled, ‘Before it is too late’.
