Living with fumes of death: More Nigerians dying from inhaling generator fumes

ARUKAINO UMUKORO writes that more Nigerians are dying from inhaling generator fumes even as the country’s energy sector is comatose
In the still of the night, it sneaked in quietly and lingered dangerously for hours. With every breath intake, the deadly gas known as carbon monoxide, found in fumes from generators as well as in car exhausts, sucked lives out of its hapless victims who were fast asleep. This was what happened on May 28, when Mrs. Chinyere Celestine, and four of her children were found dead in their home off Goodnews Street, in Azikoro suburb, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
They were said to have died in their sleep that night, while the generator was still on.
The father of the children and husband of Chinyere, identified as Celestine, who was said to be in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when the tragedy occurred, had called a neighbour when he could not reach his wife on telephone the next day. After several attempts to wake the victims, the neighbour raised the alarm that compelled other neighbours to force the door open. They found the victims’ lifeless bodies.

Why we annuled June 12 Presidential election — General Ibrahim Babangida

By Jide Ajani

There are many ‘ifs’ 20 years after the annulment of the June 12, 1993presidential election – that is still considered Nigeria’s freest and fairest.  If then military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, had known that the decision to annul the election would lead to the plethora of crises that Nigeria is yet to come over, he may not have acted in that manner.  Indeed if he had known that the  electoral process today would be much worse and replete with serial instances of the reasons he gave for the annulment, he may not have done so.

Must See: Clarifying Nigeria's debt position - Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (G7 or F9 Economies lol)

A statement from the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
There has recently been a lot of misinformation and misconception in our public debate on debt. My goal in this article is to shed some light on the public debt, to clarify the real state of Nigeria’s debt position, and hopefully, provide a knowledge platform for constructive debate.
Let me say at the outset that no one in government is supportive of a Nigeria that returns to a high state of indebtedness. On a personal note, having gone through tremendous stress during the quest for Paris Club debt relief, I am committed to a Nigerian economy that is fiscally prudent, balances its books and remains at a low state of indebtedness.
To begin, Nigeria’s overall debt is comprised of external and domestic debts. The external debt is typically owed to foreign creditors such as multilateral agencies (for example, the Africa Development Bank, the World Bank, or the Islamic Development Bank), to bilateral sources (such as the China Exim Bank, the French Development Bank or the Japanese Aid Agency), or to private creditors such as investors in our Eurobonds.

Nigeria can’t survive another civil war –Mark ( Do You Agree ?)

The President of the Senate, David Mark, on Thursday said those beating the drums of war ahead of the 2015 elections, should realise that no nation survives two civil wars. Mark said this in Abuja while addressing his colleagues during a special plenary session to mark the end of the Second Legislative Session of the 7th Senate.
He said, “Those beating the drums of war should realise that no nation can survive two civil wars in one lifetime.
“These trends must stop, and we must all remember that the nation is greater than the sum total of its parts.”
Mark said this just as he lashed out at elected public officeholders whom he accused of abandoning governance in pursuit of their personal ambitions ahead of the elections.
According to him, the vaulting personal ambitions among politicians was over-heating the polity and distracting officeholders from the onerous task of governance.

Deciphering 2015 Cryptic Code: Find GEJ!

In 1588, King Philip II of Spain launched the Spanish Armada against Britain, This fleet of 130 ships  carrying more than 24,000 men, sailed up the British Channel, only to suffer defeat  by the British Navy and to fall victim contrary winds and fierce Atlantic storms. This event marked the decisive passing of Naval superiority from Spain to England.

Is PDP falling victim to contrary winds and fierce APC storms and it's lacked of internal democracy mechanism? APC should not dither to cash on these loopholes. Welcome to Wadata Plaza, PDP headquarter, an Amphitheater of Dreams for PDP chairmen. For PDP chairmen the seat remains the most unsettled and uncertain. Wadata Plaza remains a nightmare for it’s would be occupants.
