Sierra Leone Declares State Of Emergency Over Ebola Outbreak




Sierra Leone began quarantining areas of Ebola infection, as international health officials announced an international $100m plan to combat an epidemic which has already killed more than 700 people in West Africa.

Security forces set up quarantines on Thursday, hours after Sierra Leone’s President, Ernest Bai Koroma, ordered a state of emergency, cancelled a trip to the US and called a summit with regional leaders and the World Health Organisation on how to deal with the crisis.

WHO: Ebola Death Toll Rises To 729



Fifty-seven more deaths from the Ebola epidemic spreading alarm in west Africa have pushed the overall fatality toll from the outbreak to 729, the World Health Organization said Thursday.

The 57 deaths were recorded between Thursday and Sunday last week in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, the UN health agency said in a statement.
It added that 122 new cases were detected over the four days, taking the total number of confirmed and likely infected cases to 1,323, AFP reported.

US Slams Israel’s Bombing Of UN Shelter In Gaza




The United States has slammed ally, Israel for bombs that killed 19 people at a UN shelter in Gaza, in its strongest condemnation yet of Israeli attacks on civilians in the Palestinian enclave.


Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman, said on Thursday that the shelling of the school in Jabaliya was “totally indefensible” and called on Israeli forces to “live up to their own standards” of protecting civilians.
“While we underscore the importance of a full and prompt investigation of this tragic incident, as well as a shelling of other UN facilities and schools that have been hit, it does not appear there’s a lot of doubt about whose artillery was involved in this incident,” Earnest said.

FG sensitises airport workers on Ebola dangers





The Federal Government on Thursday commenced workers’ sensitisation on Ebola at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

A statement by the Coordinating General Manager, Aviation Parastatals, Mr. Yakubu Datti, said the workers were from different agencies operating at the two major international airports.

He said the employees  were sensitised by Port Health officials on the dangers posed by the Ebola virus and how to prevent the spread of the virus in the work place, home and the community.

Imam Murdered In China After Morning Prayers





The government-appointed head of China’s largest mosque has been murdered after conducting morning prayers, the local government in the far western region of Xinjiang has said.  State media report on Thursday that Jume Tahir, the Uighur imam of the 600-year-old Id Kah mosque in the city of Kashgar, was killed on Wednesday by “three thugs influenced by religious extremist ideology”, the Xinjiang state website Tianshan said.

Police launched an all-out investigation and shot dead two of the alleged assailants while capturing the other,
Tianshan said. Tianshan added Tahir’s killing was “premeditated” and that the suspects intended to commit a “ruthless murder”.
Tahir was found dead in a pool of blood outside the mosque’s prayer house, US-based Radio Free Asia reported earlier on its website.

Ebola Update: 69 persons on surveillance, two quarantined




The Federal Government has placed 69 persons, who had first contact with the Liberian-born victim of Ebola Virus, Patrick Sawyerr, on surveillance, while two persons have been quarantined (isolated), the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said.
Sawyer died in a Lagos hospital on Friday last week.
Chukwu debunked reports that the government had closed its borders, saying such move might not be taken “except when it becomes necessary.”

15 feared killed as gunmen sack Rivers communities





No fewer than 15 persons were feared killed in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State by some rampaging gunmen.

The gunmen, numbering about 12, stormed seven communities in the local government area and opened fire on unsuspecting persons.

It was gathered that the assailants, who were all armed with AK-47 rifles, rode into the area with six motorcycles and operated from 9pm on Wednesday till the early hours of Thursday.

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has approved the appointment of AIG Suleiman Abba as the new Inspector-General of Police.

AIG Abba, currently the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, comprising Abuja, Kaduna and Niger states, replaces the incumbent Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Abubakar who proceeds on statutory retirement today having completed 35 years in service.

The incoming Inspector-General, a lawyer, hails from Jigawa State and is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.

UN's Amos Cites Lack of Electricity, Water & Sewage, Calls for Gaza Violence to Stop




UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos told the UN Security Council on Thursday “no place is safe” in Gaza today. Amos told the Council that “over 103 UN facilities have come under attack including an UNWRA school hosting over 3,300 displaced yesterday. 19 people were killed and over a hundred injured. The United Nations has lost seven staff and other humanitarian workers have been killed since the outbreak of hostilities.”

Western Sanctions Signal ‘New Cold War’ Against Russia, Disregard WTO - Lawmaker



Announcing sanctions against Russia, the West has in fact declared a new Cold War on Moscow, while the US has ignored the WTO rules by protecting its economy and dealing a blow to Russian and European companies, a deputy speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament said Thursday.

“To a large extent, a “Cold War” has been declared which is today expressed by devising sanctions,” Sergei Neverov told Rossiya-24 TV channel.
The Russian lawmaker also accused Washington of provoking unfair competition.

“Today, the United States and to a large extent, Europe, have neglected the World Trade Organization decisions and the WTO itself by introducing such steps and therefore protecting certain sectors of the US economy,” the lawmaker said.

“On the other hand, the US does not care about how Europe will suffer or the fact that many companies and European citizens will lose not less or even more than Russia,” Neverov said.

No fresh case of Ebola in Lagos - Lagos state Government says



The Lagos state government says no fresh case of Ebola virus has been discovered in the state or in any part of the country. 

According to the Special Adviser to the Lagos state Governor on Public Health, Dr (Mrs) Yewande Adeshina, all the 59 people who had direct or indirect contact with late Liberian Patrick Sawyer who died last Friday in Lagos from the virus, have been traced, tested and found to be hale and hearty and have not exhibited any unusual body temperature or any other symptoms of the dreaded virus.

Mother of suspected bomber who disguised as a woman says he's not a terrorist




On Friday July 25th, the Nigerian military released a statement saying they'd arrested a person dressed as a female who's suspected to be linked to the Wednesday 23rd bomb blast directed at former Head of state, General Buhari. ( if you missed it,read here)

Well, the suspect's mother Zubeida Yusuf, who lives in Mando, Kaduna has spoken and she says her son, Mansir Yusuf, isn't any terrorist. She said the military mistook her son for an enemy when he was found wearing female clothes;
“My son is not a terrorist. What is wrong with him is an evil spiritual attack which is making him to prefer women’s clothing and to act as one who is mentally retarded. Everyone in Mando knows that he only has a spiritual condition that is making him to act strangely.

Liberia shut down schools over of Ebola Virus



The Liberian government announced today that most schools in the nation will soon be shutdown to be able to prevent further spread of the deadly Ebola virus.  The military has been called directly into properly enforce the measures. NYSC redeploys corps members from Borno, Kano, Yobe, others



The National Youth Service Corps on Thursday announced the redeployment of corps members from seven northern states.

The affected states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano and Yobe states.

A statement on Thursday in Abuja by the Director of Public Relations in NYSC, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, said the decision followed the high rate of insecurity in some parts of the North.

The corps members are part of the  2014 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course  scheduled to commence next week Tuesday August 5, 2014.

The NYSC said due to logistic reasons, the orientation course will be conducted in two streams for different states.

 Mad Man Stabbed Nigerian Policemen In Alakija Lagos

A suspected kidnapper who disguised as a mad man has been arrested at Alakija bus stop in Lagos after he allegedly attacked two policemen on duty with a bottle.  The drama took place in the premises of a Redeemed Christian Church of God in Alakija part of Lagos state Nigeria yesterday. The policemen on duty were attacked because they tried to chase an outrageous woman from the premises of the church.

FG rolls-out 10,000 low cost houses





The Federal Government on Thursday officially began the roll-out of the first phase of its 10,000 housing units under the affordable home ownership scheme.

The project, to be spearheaded by the newly established Nigerian Mortgage Refinancing Company will enable Nigerians to own their houses at affordable rate.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala while speaking at the event in Abuja said with the flag-off, low income earners would begin to have the opportunity to own their houses under a flexible payment package.

Police explains rise in female suicide bombings in Nigeria



The Nigeria Police Force spokesperson Frank Mba has given an insight into the recent rise of female suicide bombers in Nigeria. Addressing newsmen at the National Information Center yesterday, Mr Mba said Boko Haram men now use women because they raise fewer suspicions.
"If you have been following the trends of terrorism worldwide, you will understand that use of female suicide bombers is actually not totally new. It is actually a new trend in our own part of the world. The reasons why established international terrorist organizations go for female suicide bombers is clear.
