Gratuitous military, SSS assault on the press

IN an unprecedented assault on the press, not seen since the dark days of military dictatorship, soldiers and State Security Service personnel fanned out across the country on Friday morning to intercept, seize and, in some cases, destroy newspapers as they were being distributed. The brazen assault on press freedom signposts the rapid descent of a discredited government and its security agencies into undisguised tyranny.

They will not succeed. Nigerians and the press have endured and triumphed over tyrannical forces – colonial and home-grown, military and civilian – and this latest violence to our cherished freedoms will certainly not be different.

But for a stroke of luck, Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, would have been among the dead in the terror attack that took place at the Nairobi Westgate mall in Kenya last weekend.

Speaking at a press conference at the Freedom Park, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday in honour of the late Ghanaian poet, Professor Kofi Awoonor who died in the attack, Soyinka led a group of eminent Nigerian writers to condemn the Nairobi massacre. Lagos Court Awards N5.5 Million Against Oladipo Diya for Unlawful Assault, Battery

A Lagos State High Court yesterday awarded N5.5 million in damages against General Oladipo Diya in a suit filed by one Oluwatosin Onamade alleging assault and battery by Mr. Diya, who was once the second-in-command during the military dictatorship of the late General Sani Abacha.
In a ruling that took more than two hours to deliver, Justice Opeyemi Oke ruled that Mr. Diya was guilty of assault and unlawful seizure of the claimant’s property. The assault took place in 2008 while the claimant, Mr. Onamade, who was at the time the funeral director at LOTAD Mortuary Services owned by Mr. Diya, was in a contract renegotiation process with the former military honcho. Mr. Onamade told the court that Mr. Diya and other defendants brutalized him. Apart from Mr. Diya, other defendants in the lawsuit included Dele Obakoya, Emmanuel Ilori and Dele Oyesanya, all accomplices in the assault.
In 2010, Mr. Onomade had also accused Mr. Diya of trading in human parts through his LOTAD Mortuary firm.

Man charged with assault for stabbing an intruder

A man defending himself against an intruder was charged with aggravated assault and faces up to 14 years in prison.Mahilal Moses and his girlfriend, Sarah Walsh, knew something was wrong upon entering the house of her mother just after 3 am and found the side door broken open.

They became even more alarmed to see a large pair of black Air Jordans, at the bottom of the stairs leading to the second floor, where her mother, Kimberly Walsh, was asleep. Mahilal, 26, went straight to the kitchen, grabbed a large knife and ran upstairs, where he confronted the intruder hiding behind the door of the room of Kimberly Walsh.

Within minutes, the wounded intruder, Kino Johnson, 33, was gone, and hours later Mahilal, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. The case highlights the much debated issue of how much force is too much when a stranger tries to steal your property or breaks into your home.
