Corruption: $2.6 trillion stolen annually, says AfDB.



The African Development Bank (AfDB) says an estimated 2.6 trillion dollars is stolen annually through high level corrupt practises in Africa. Dr Donald Kaberuka, AfDB’s President said today as part of activities to mark the International Anti-Corruption Day.

He said that the figure amounted to more than five per cent equivalence of the global GDP. According to AfDB one trillion dollars were being paid in bribes across the world every year. Kaberuka said that corruption had become a global threat, causing a serious roadblock to economic development and prosperity.

Kanye West denies comparing herself to Nelson Mandela stating he would not ‘dishonor or trivialize' the uplifting leader



Rapper Kanye West has denied reports that he compared himself to Nelson Mandela. In a series of tweets, Kanye has explained how he was misquoted and set the record straight over his supposed comments.
The Daily Currant had run a ‘fake’ interview with Kanye, where they quoted him as saying ‘I liberate minds with my music. That’s more important than liberating a few people from apartheid or whatever.’

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africans of all races flocked to houses of worship Sunday for a national day of prayer and reflection to honor Nelson Mandela, unified in their love for a historic figure whose funeral is expected to be one of the biggest in modern times.  At the Regina Mundi Church that was near the epicenter of the Soweto township uprising in 1976 against white rule, Father Sebastian J. Rossouw described Mandela as “moonlight,” saying he offered a guiding light for South Africa. Hundreds of people attended the Mass.

U.S. war veteran released by North Korea returns home.

North Korea detained Merrill E. Newman for crimes it accused him of committing during the conflict six decades ago as a member of the U.S. special forces. He was released for humanitarian reasons after he apologized, the country’s state news agency said.

Death Shift from Bride's head after wedding on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway



A bride narrowly escaped death in an automobile crash while on her way from her wedding. The accident involving a NNPC  tanker with number plate XG 321 MKA, a cargo truck and two saloon cars happened at about 4: 45pm on Saturday, near to the Otedola bridge, Alausa, on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.

Our reporter who witnessed the accident said the NNPC truck, while descending the slop from Alausa at top speed, couldn't hold its break. It then ran into the initial car and squashed the second one from the cargo truck.

Abomination: 24-year-old Cross River man Impregnates Younger Sister




A twenty-four-year-old man, Ndifreke Uko has allegedly impregnated his younger sister, Otobong Uko.
The incident occurred which occurred at Ikang Etta Street in Calabar Municipality of Cross River State, has left residents reeling in shock as they could not fathom why the two siblings engaged in such incestuous act.

Narrating her ordeal, Otobong said: “My brother has been having regular s*x with me until I suddenly realized what the whole thing was all about. And when I noticed it, I told my father, but he advised me not to make it public, until three months after I realized that I had missed my period”.

President Goodluck Jonathan and other 59 world leaders to attend Mandela's funeral



President Goodluck Jonathan; United States President Barrack Obama; and  about 58 other foreign heads of state and government are expected to attend either the memorial ceremony or the state funeral of former South African President, Nelson Mandela. The funeral is expected to hold in South Africa in the coming week, a foreign ministry spokesman  said.

He said the final number of persons who would attend either Tuesday’s memorial in Johannesburg or the funeral in Qunu next Sunday would be confirmed in due course. According to online news reports, Jonathan will leave Abuja on Monday (today)  evening to join other world leaders in South Africa at events leading up to the burial of Mandela. He is expected to also attend the Memorial Service on Tuesday at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg and will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri.

For a passenger boarding his bus for the first time, nothing suggests Pius has no legs. When a reporter boarded his bus 2 weeks ago at Town Planning junction towards Western Avenue in Lagos, he didn't notice Pius had no legs to drive the Danfo. After about 10 minutes journey, a driver who rode a mini truck pulled up on the lane Pius drove and before the passengers could blink their eyes Pius increased his speed and got at par with the truck, looked towards the driver and said, "Iwo, ma deal pelu e (You, I will deal with you). You dey try me?"

Asuu Strike Update: ASUU meets to decide the Fate of Students today (Read)



AS the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) meets today in Abuja, the issue of resumption from their five months-old strike will top the agenda of the meeting as expectations of Nigerians is to see the universities resume for lectures soonest.

The ASUU president, Comrade Nasir Isa Fagge’s demand that the Federal Government should show commitment of meeting the disbursement of N200 billion for the year 2013 allocation to the universities through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was said to have been met, according to the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Dr. Doyin Okupe, last week.

124 million people in the EU live under the threat of poverty - report



A report issued by the European Union's statistics office shows nearly a quarter of the European population were at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Over 124 million people in the European Union – or almost a quarter of its entire population - live under the threat of poverty or social exclusion.

Last year, 124.5 million people, or 24.8 percent of Europe’s population were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, compared to 24.3 percent in 2011 and 23.7 percent in 2008, the Eurostat said in a document published earlier in the week.

US Boycotts American makers, buys Russian helicopters for Afghanistan military



The Pentagon bypassed United States helicopter makers, choosing to spend more than $1 billion on dozens of Russian Mi-17 helicopters for the Afghanistan military. The Mil Mi-17 is a Russian helicopter currently in production at two factories in Kazan and Ulan-Ude. It is a medium twin-turbine transport helicopter that can also act as a gunship.

In an effort to arm Afghanistan‘s security forces with new helicopters, the Pentagon bypassed American companies and turned instead to Moscow for dozens of Russian Mi-17 rotorcraft at a cost of more than $1 billion.
