How Artists and Intellectuals Can be Instrumental in the Creation of Dictators – Soyinka

Many Nigerians will agree that the last thing the country needs right now is another dictator. Meanwhile, Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has shown how the making of dictators can be aided by artists and intellectuals who, he said, are custodians of the people’s culture. Soyinka was speaking at a colloquium, which is part of the 2012 Port Harcourt Carnival (CARNIRIV 2012) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He said every culture, if not guarded against abuse by politics, could breed dictatorship.

How Could Jacintha Saldanha commit suicide over a Prank?

Some things don't make sense to me and this is one of them. She had two teenage kids, a husband and a loving family and still killed herself over a prank? Something is fishy here !!! ANy help Omo Oodua Readers ?
Jacintha Saldanha (pictured above left) is the 46 year old nurse who killed herself after being duped by a hoaxer pretending to be the Queen. Three days before her death, Mrs Saldanha was manning the hospital switchboard where Kate Middleton was taken to for acute morning sickness when she took a call from two Australian radio presenters – Mel Greig and Michael Christian – (pictured above right) impersonating the Queen and Prince Charles. They were transferred to the Duchess’s ward and broadcast confidential information given to them by a second nurse. Although she wasn’t blamed in any way for what happened, friends said Mrs Saldanha ‘took it very badly’ when prank was broadcast.

Part 1: Auchi Bank Robbery Operations "How The Attack Was Hatched"

It was a well planned operation  by  bandits. The dare-devil robbers, numbering about 50, stormed Auchi, Edo State, in  a bus and three Camry cars loaded with dynamites and bombs. They unleashed mayhem on  three new generation banks and one old generation bank. As it seemed, the robbers were familiar with Auchi, buttressing the argument by many that they may have been in town for about two weeks plotting this attack. They started the attack around  6:30 pm when security operatives were either praying in the mosques or handing over to those on night shift.

Part 2: Auchi Bank Robbery Operations "How The Attack Was Hatched"

Then they unleashed mayhem on the three banks located along Poly Road and one at Igbe Road. They used dynamites to blow up the ATM machines and the bank buildings in their efforts to loot the banks. While the operations were on, some of the gang members shot ceaselessly.

Sad: ‘How My Daughter’s Fiancé Bathed Her With Acid’

The motive behind the acid bath of 22-year-old Chika Egbo by her estranged lover, David Sulaimon, remains elusive, but one thing is sure, the victim may not remain the same again. Chika is a student of the Enugu State College of Education. Last Tuesday, when our correspondent visited her at the Burns Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Egbo has become a shadow of the beautiful girl she was. The substance Sulaimon allegedly poured on her had destroyed every visible skin from her chest upwards.

Both Presidents Barack Obama and Goodluck Jonathan wanted to talk on phone, but twice calls from the White House to Aso Rock failed to make the connection. Authoritative sources confirmed during the week that efforts by President Obama to personally speak with Jonathan to return his congratulatory message has been aborted at least twice by the failure of the telephone system in Aso Rock.

Odi Massacre: How FG Killed Old Men, Women –Jonathan

Says no militant died in the military action

By RAZAQ BAMIDELE, NDUBUISI ORJI, CHINELO OBOGO, SAM OTTI (Lagos) and JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE (Abuja)

Several years after the bombardment of Odi Community in Bayelsa State by the military, President Goodluck Jonathan said it did not succeed in curbing militancy in Niger Delta.

Jonathan said rather, it worsened militancy in the region and attracted international outcry against the Federal Government.

Jonathan, who disclosed this yesterday during a presidential media chat in Abuja, also said it was too early for him to declare whether or not he will contest the 2015 election. He said if the military action in Odi had stopped militancy, there would have not been any need for the amnesty programme for militants in the Niger Delta initiated by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
