Gov. Fashola presents N489.7b budget estimates for 2014 to Lagos Assembly -



The Lagos State Gov. Babatunde Fashola, on Wednesday presented budget estimates of N489.7 billion for the year 2014 to the State House of Assembly.

Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria is the country’s commercial nerve centre. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the budget was about N8 billion less than the 2013 estimates of N497.27 billion.

NAN further reports that the budget is comprised of a proposed capital expenditure of N225.02 billion and a recurrent figure of N234. 67 billion.

Power Supply Will Reasonably Stabilise Before June 2014 – President Jonathan



President Goodluck Jonathan has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will reasonably stabilise before the midst of next year. Jonathan also urged workers of recently privatised PHCN to shelve their plan to be on strike on the lands of non-payment of these entitlements, as he explained efforts were on to pay for them.

FG to complete 11 power plants by 2014



The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, has said all the 11 power plants being constructed by the Federal Government will be completed before the end of the first quarter of 2014.
Maku stated this on Monday while fielding questions from journalists after the Peoples Democratic Party stakeholders’ meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
He said seven out of the power plants had so far been completed, while efforts were being intensified to complete others before the end of the first quarter of 2014.

"Nobody can stop me from contesting in 2014" — Opeyemi Bamidele



The Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Budget and Research, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele, has said his determination to contest the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State was unstoppable.
Bamidele spoke in Ado Ekiti on Saturday while addressing his supporters who are members of the Action Congress of Nigeria. Surprisingly, some members of the Peoples Democratic Party were seen at the event which was held along Basiri Road. The event was held under the platform of ‘Ekiti Bibire Coalition.’

Leaders of the ACN including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, had on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti, endorsed Governor Kayode Fayemi for second term. Tinubu had asked Bamidele to drop his ambition saying the right time would come for him to contest but the lawmaker insisted that nothing could stop him from contesting the poll.

NERC: Nigeria To Generate 7,000 Megawatts Of Electricity By 2014



Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr Sam Amadi, on Monday in Abuja assured Nigerians of increased electricity generation from 5,000 to 7,000 megawatts by 2014. Amadi who gave the assurance during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the increase was to meet the yearnings of Nigerians. “By our projection, we will get as much as 10,000 megawatts by first quarter of 2014, nevertheless the commission prefers to expect a much lower figure, that will be 7,000.

U.S. to maintain 9 bases in Afghanistan after 2014




The United States will maintain nine military bases in Afghanistan after NATO’s troop withdrawal in 2014.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai confirmed on Thursday that the bases, including in Kabul, Bagram, Mazari Sharif, Jalalabad, Kandahar and Herat, would stay because that was in the interests of Afghanistan.
The U.S. will cut its Afghan troop contingent from about 66,000 now to between 3,000 and 9,000 after 2014.
