Wedding day tragedy: Bridegroom dies on way to church (photo)



There was supposed to be a wedding at one of the churches in Ekwuluobia Anambra this weekend. Instead, a funeral was arranged.
The 38-year-old groom, Mr. Nze- kwe Chukwuemeka Barthlomew, died just hours before his wedding vows to his bride groom on Saturday.
The late Bartholomew, a vulcanizer, died in an accident on his way to Church for his wedding ceremony in Ekwuluobia Anambra, yesterday.

Palestinians Agree on New Ceasefire With Israel - Reports



The Palestinian delegation said it accepts a Egyptian proposal for a new 72-hour ceasefire with Israel, AP reported Sunday.
"We are here to look for an agreement. We cannot have an agreement without talks, so we accepted an Egyptian proposal to have a ceasefire for 72 hours in order to resume the talks," a member of the Palestinian delegation was quoted as saying.
Earlier today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to return his delegation to Cairo to hold talks on resolving the conflict in the Gaza Strip until Palestinian militants stop rocket attacks.
"Israel will not negotiate under fire," Netanyahu said.

Russia Forces US Submarine Out of Boundary Waters



Russia's Northern Fleet's anti-submarine forces have detected and forced out a US submarine from Russian boundary waters, a high-ranking source in Russia's Navy told RIA Novosti Saturday.
"On August 7, 2014, the patrol forces of the Northern Fleet detected a foreign submarine, supposedly a US Navy Virginia-class one, in the Barents Sea. A seaborne anti-submarine group, as well as an anti-submarine airplane Il-38, was sent to the region to search and track it down," the source said.

Chad withdraws Chinese exploration permits



Chad has decided to withdraw five exploration permits issued to a Chinese company and press charges in a row over a $1.2bn fine for environmental violations, the oil ministry has said.
Djerassem Le Bemadjiel, Chad’s oil minister, told a news conference on Saturday that the move was “to avoid further environmental degradation, not to make place for other companies”.
The China National Petroleum Company (CNPC) was forced to suspend operations in Chad in May after refusing to pay a fine of $1.2bn for “unacceptable practices” that had led to “noxious spills” around drilling sites.

Jonathan congratulates Aregbesola on his victory




President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday congratulated Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State on his victory in the Saturday election.  In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President said the peaceful conduct of the elections reaffirmed his administration’s determination to positively reform Nigeria’s electoral processes.
He added that the outcome of the election vindicated him from what he called unfair and uncharitable allegations that measures put in place by the Federal Government for the Ekiti and Osun State elections were designed to achieve a favourable outcome for his party, the Peoples Democratic Party.

Iran: Plane crash outside Tehran in kills 48 passengers and crew




48 people, including 40 passengers and 8 crew were killed this morning August 10th when a small passenger plane crashed shortly after take off from Mehrabad Airport in Tehran, the capital of Iran, Iranian state TV reports.

The plane, an Antonov An-140, designed for short domestic flights, was traveling from Tehran to the northeastern city of Tabas when it went down in a residential area. At least five children were on board the plane. Five people on the ground were burnt to death. Iran's aviation authority cited engine failure as the cause of the crash. This is the first major crash in Iran since 2011.

Angry students Shutdown FUPRE Gates after a 400l student is shot dead



Angry students grounded activities at Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, FUPRE on August 8th by shutting the school gates following the killing of a fellow student, Jimoh Lateef Babatunde, (pictured above) a 400 level Computer Science student.

Jimoh, who was due to graduate in the next four months, was said to be leaving his Boys' hostel in Ugbomro around 8pm on Thursday when he was shot dead by gunmen suspected to armed robbers. 
"It is another case of robbery. We were together discussing sports when he excused us to fetch some items outside. Barely 30 minutes later, he was lying in a pool of his blood, his neck shattered by one of the two gunshots" Akpomedaye Philip, Governor of the isolated off-campus FUPRE Boys Hostel told Vanguard.

Man allegedly kills his wife just a day after she gave birth to their twins





The Nation reports

Sources revealed that the incident took place at the couple’s apartment at No 23, Temidire Street, Ajowa area of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Findings further revealed that the deceased’s husband, one Mr. Kola, popularly known in asMelomelo (how many, how many), had escaped with the twins even as he was reported to have slept in the same room with his late wife, their new twins and other four children the night before the incident.

Bitter Kola & Ebola: What Nigerians Need to know - Health Minister



Speaking about Dr. Maurice Iwu's thesis regarding bitter kola and Ebola (Iwu said Kolanut could cure Ebola - predicated on research), Nigerian Health Minister Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said the  government is considering making laws to arrest those who make bogus claims to truly have a remedy for Ebola, and said Nigeria needs to work with Dr. Iwu. The Minister said told Vanguard;

On 5th August 2014, elements of the 7th Infantry Division, Nigerian Army, backed by light attack jets of the Nigerian Airforce, commenced an assault to dislodge combined Boko Haram forces in control of Damboa Town and surrounding areas in Damboa Local Government Area (LGA), of Borno State, that the insurgents captured earlier in July. 


At the same time, the insurgents captured their second local government seat and urban settlement in WarZone South, when they seized Gwoza Town (population 72,000) the headquarters of the LGA of the same name and some 30-40km from the Cameroonian border. 

Incumbent governor, Rauf Aregbesola re-elected governor of Osun State



Incumbent governor of Osun State Rauf Aregbesola of the APC won yesterday's keenly contested governorship election in the state. In accordance with INEC officials, Governor Aregbesola won in 22 local government regions of their state while his challenger Iyiola Omisore of the PDP won in 8 local govt areas.

The returning officer for the election and Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Bamitale Omole declared Aregbesola winner having polled 394, 684 votes while Omisore polled 292, 747 votes.

Delta Governor’s aide, Sunny Ofili, traditional ruler die in auto crash



The special adviser to the Delta State governor on information and communication technology (ICT) Sunny Ofili (pictured above), and the Obi of Issele-Uku, Henry Ezeagwunam, died today August 9th in a fatal car crash in Delta state.

Mr Ofili, Mr Ezeagwunam, who was driving and his son were traveling in an SUV when they crashed into a stationery lorry laden with gravel at Otulu Junction on the Benin-Asaba-Onitsha expressway. The car somersaulted several times and burst into flames. All three passengers were burnt to death

Osun Decides: Motorist Knocks Down 6-yr-Old Boy During APC’s Jubilation

Rauf Aregbesola takes a pose after casting his vote at Ifofin unit 1 polling centre in Ilesa Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state has taken an early lead as the gubernatorial election reaches a climax. Cumulative results as at 6:17 p.m. reveals that the incumbent governor leads the pack. His party, the All Progressives Congress has so far recorded 213,465 against 150,553 of his main contender Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party.
