Resident Doctors Remain Sacked – Health Minister





The Nigerian government has stuck to its decision to sack resident doctors and suspend the residency programme in teaching hospitals, despite mounting condemnations and resident doctors resuming at their duty posts.

While addressing journalists after the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting, Nigeria’s Health Minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said despite news reportage on the resumption of duties of doctors and the calls to reinstate resident doctors, the federal government had not rescinded its decision.

Nigeria successfully contains Ebola, has only one case left - Health Minister





Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said today that Nigeria has had the opportunity to lessen the amount of Ebola cases to just one.

At a media briefing held today August 26th in Abuja, Prof. Onyebuchi said only 1 patient out from the 13 confirmed cases in Nigeria continues to be at the Isolation center. He explained five of the infected died while seven have successfully recovered and have now been discharged. He also said two of the nurses who attended to Patrick Sawyer at the First Consultant hospital were discharged yesterday.

Spouses of 2 dead Nigerian Ebola victims test positive - Health Minister




Minister of Health Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu announced today August 22nd that Nigeria has recorded two new cases of the Ebola disease. The Minister said the two new cases are spouses of dead Ebola victims who had primary contact with late Patrick Sawyer, the man who brought Ebola to Nigeria. Prof. Chukwu said the two new cases are the first secondary contacts in isolation to test positive to the deadly virus. This brings the total number of cases in Nigeria to 14, with 5 deaths and 5 survivors. Details soon..

Bitter Kola & Ebola: What Nigerians Need to know - Health Minister



Speaking about Dr. Maurice Iwu's thesis regarding bitter kola and Ebola (Iwu said Kolanut could cure Ebola - predicated on research), Nigerian Health Minister Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said the  government is considering making laws to arrest those who make bogus claims to truly have a remedy for Ebola, and said Nigeria needs to work with Dr. Iwu. The Minister said told Vanguard;

"One of the things we decided to focus on by setting up that committee is to streamline claims of possible scientific cure, not a situation where pastors and imams claim  they can cure Ebola.   We might even go to the extent of making laws to arrest people with such bogus claims. We would take every suggestion seriously. About Professor Iwu, we know that quite a number of Nigerians accessed his article through the internet.
