Osun: Omisore’s Time Has Come – Jonathan



President Goodluck Jonathan said on Saturday in Ile-Ife that the PDP candidate for the Aug. 9 Osun governorship poll, Iyiola Omisore, would emerge victorious.  Jonathan spoke during a courtesy visit to Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Ooni of Ife.
“Omisore’s time has come …God’s time is the best”, he said.
The president, who described Ooni as a blessing to the present generation, thanked him for his support.
He said Omisore was a “fantastic material” that Osun needed at this time to take the state to the “promised land”.

A native doctor and suspected ritual killer arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command has said that he grinds human heads into powder as charm for ladies who are looking for choice husbands and big contracts.

Olasunkanmi Owolabi, a 43-year-old native of Oyo town, said the concoction is also used as cure for stubborn sores, mental illness, sickle cell anaemia and epilepsy. He also said had planned to establish a specialist native hospital if government gave him the approval.

Another Confab delegate Has kicked the Bucket




The Secretariat of the National Conference on Saturday announced the death of a delegate, Prof. Muhammad Nur Alkali. He was one of the six delegates representing the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs at the 2014 National Conference in Abuja.

A statement by the Assistant Secretary, Media and Communications of the conference, Mr. Akpandem James said Alkali died in his residence in Maiduguri on Friday night at the age of 68.  A Professor of History and two-term Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (1985 – 1992), the late Alkali was Director General of
the Nigeria Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee under the administration of  General Sani Abacha.

President Jonathan sacks NNPC boss, Yakubu, appoints replacement




President Goodluck Jonathan has removed the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mr Andrew Yakubu.

The President has also appointed Joseph Dawha GMD of NNPC while Anthony Muoneke has been appointed Managing Director of Nigerian Petroleum Development Company.  Aisha Abdulrahaman and Attahir Yusuf have also been appointed as Executive Directors in NNPC.

UN Conclusions Disprove Claims Against Russia Over Ukrainian Crisis - Moscow




The Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday that recent remarks by the top UN human rights official shed doubt on claims of Russia's direct involvement in escalation of the Ukrainian crisis.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told reporters in Geneva on Thursday that the United Nations did not possess any hard evidence that Russia supplied independence supporters in eastern Ukraine with weapons.

"We consider it [Pillay's statement] as yet another confirmation of the fact that all accusations against our country over its alleged role in the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis are groundless and unwarranted," the ministry said in a statement.

Popular Ijaw musician, Ebizimor dies



Popular Ijaw musician, Dr. Robert Ebizimor has died. Ebizimor was involved with a ghastly motor accident on Warri/Ughelli highway on thursday evening (yesterday).

Ebizimor was on his way to Abuja when his vehicle ran under a parked trailer, killing him and his driver on the spot. The Governor of Bayelsa state, Seriake dickson expressed deep shock and sadness on hearing about Ebizimor's death. He's ordered a state burial in honour of the late music star.

Ebola: FG stops corpses of Nigerians





The Federal Government will no longer allow the remains of dead Nigerians, especially from countries battling Ebola virus, from being brought into the country for burial.

The Federal Government is also probing the corpse of a Nigerian that was brought into the country from Liberia last month to ascertain whether the deceased died of Ebola or not.

The Director General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, said this on Friday in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

The Police in Jalingo, Taraba State, have confirmed the death of 14 persons, including two soldiers, in a renewed violence at Ibi, headquarters of Ibi Local Government Area, on Thursday morning.

Adamawa Youth Group Calls On Ribadu To Join PDP, Contest Governorship By-Election




Adamawa youths under the banner of Concerned Youths for Good Governance, have called on the pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and contest in the Adamawa State governorship by-election.


Ribadu is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress but is being courted by the ruling PDP in the state due to his soaring popularity. Speaking in an interactive session with stakeholders from 21 local government areas in the state in Yola, chairman of the group, Ibrahim Toungo said the former anti-graft czar has all it takes to win election on the platform of PDP.

Ebola crisis: Virus spreading too fast, says WHO




The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is spreading faster than efforts to control it, World Health Organisation head Margaret Chan has said.  She told a summit of regional leaders that failure to contain it could be “catastrophic” in terms of lives lost.  But she said the virus, which has claimed 729 lives in four West African countries since February, could be stopped if well managed. Ebola kills up to 90 per cent of those infected.

It spreads by contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, organs – or contaminated environments.

Police Uncovers Explosives Buried Inside Building In Bauchi.



The Bauchi State Police Command yesterday said it uncovered improvised explosive devices (IEDs) buried inside a building in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of the state. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Haruna, confirmed the incident to journalists in his office in Bauchi, saying the discovery was made on Wednesday afternoon.

IGP Suleiman Abba as the new Inspector-General of Police by President Jonathan, the new IG has today, August 1, formally taken over from former Police boss, IGP MD Abubakar who had successfully piloted the affairs of the Force from the 25th January, 2012 when he was appointed to July 31, 2014, having completed 35 years of service. I’ll lead Nigerians to defeat terror -Jonathan



President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday evening vowed that he would lead Nigerians to defeat the Boko Haram sect that has been unleashing terror on parts of the country.

“Fellow citizens, we will defeat terror and I will lead Nigerians to achieve this,” Jonathan declared at a fundraiser where over N60bn was raised for the Victims Support Fund.
The event held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja was meant to raise fund to provide relief and succour for all those who have been adversely affected by terrorism and insurgency in the country.

Ex-Militants Warn Against Termination Of Amnesty Programme




Termination of the Presidential Amnesty Programme in 2015 could trigger fresh crisis in the Niger Delta, ex-militants in the region have said. Coordinator of the ex-militants underneath the third phase amnesty (Ebipa-Opre Ex-militants Forum), Mr. Ramsey Oyakemeagbegha, in a statement in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, stated that the conditions which triggered militancy in the region hadn't been addressed.

Ebola: Abuja residents embrace safety measures




Abuja residents have begun to adjust their lifestyles to avoid contracting the Ebola virus, a News Agency of Nigeria survey has shown.  The virus has claimed over 700 lives in West African, including Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian who died in Nigeria after contracting the virus in his country.  A civil servant, Mrs Janet Obinna, told NAN that she had embraced the habit of regularly washing her hands and other sanitary measures as experts had advised.
Obinna said that contrary to her husband’s preference for bush meat in the meal, the family had resorted to eating goat meet and beef.

The All Progressives Congress has raised the alarm that the PDP-led Federal Government has started terrorising and intimidating the peaceful people of Osun State, with a view to cowing them ahead of the August 9 governorship election in the state.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party wondered why the FG will send agents of the Department of State Services, some of them masked and clad in black, to the state to harass innocent citizens in an unprovoked and primitive show of power that can only be described as sheer gangsterism.
