Nigeria set to be Africa's largest economy



JOHANNESBURG – South Africa could soon lose its status as Africa’s biggest economy to Nigeria, but in the race to be the continental powerhouse, being biggest may not be everything.
Nigeria, Africa’s top oil producer, will complete a rebasing of its gross domestic product (GDP) by next month, its statistics office says, which economists estimate could expand the size of its economy by between 20 and 60 percent.

SSS finally gets warrant of arrest for Nasir El-Rufai



The State Security Service, SSS, has finally secured a warrant of arrest for the Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nasir El-Rufai, and has now launched a manhunt for him, the spokesperson for the agency has said.
 
This is even as armed operatives of the Service again stormed a second house in Abuja believed to belong to the former minister in their desperate bid to arrest him.

Kangaroo court orders Indian woman to be gang-ra*ped for dating a man from another village - Times of India reports.



A Kangaroo court in a village in India ordered a 20year old woman (pictured above) to be gang-raped by 13 men for having a relationship with a man from another village, Times of India reports.
The woman was locked in a shed and raped overnight by 13 men, 10 of which had been 'judges' in the kangaroo court which sentenced her in a village near Suri in west Bengal state, police said.

The woman is currently fighting for her life in hospital while all 13 men have since been arrested for rape. Among them is the village headman. Continue after the Jump

At least two dead in multi-vehicle crash on icy Indiana highway.



At least two people have died and at least 22 more were injured, three of them critically, in a "grim" accident involving several semi-tractor trailers on an ice-slicked highway in northern Indiana, officials said on Thursday.

The crash occurred in icy conditions on I-94, near Michigan City, Indiana, according to LaPorte County coroner John Sullivan, speaking on the Chicago-area ABC TV station.
"I hope our count is only at two," Sullivan said, referring to the number of fatalities. He described the scene as "grim."

Talks on settling crisis in Ukraine must go through EU, OSCE mediation - Klitschko



Vitaly Klitschko, the leader of the Ukrainian opposition party Udar, believes mechanisms to overcome the political crisis in Ukraine can be discussed only through the mediation of the European Union (EU) and the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE).

"Any discussions on how to settle the crisis in Ukraine should be held through the engagement of high-level international mediators. [President Viktor] Yanukovych doesn't want to admit that all the events going on today in the country have resulted from the fact that the people have risen up against his rule," the UDAR party press service quoted Klitschko as saying.

NASA launches Tracking and Data Relay Satellite



An unmanned rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Thursday to put the newest member of NASA's space communications network into orbit.

The 19-story tall Atlas 5 rocket, built and launched by United Launch Alliance, a partnership of Lockheed Martin Corp and Boeing Co, lifted off at 9:33 p.m. EST (0233 GMT Friday).
With the 3.8-ton (3,447-kg) Boeing-built Tracking and Data Relay Satellite perched on its nose, the rocket blazed through clear, star-filled skies as it headed southeast over the Atlantic Ocean toward orbit.

Nollywood Celebrities take to the street Against Domestic Violence & Jungle Justice (Pics)



Nollywood actors and actresses, mostly from the Yoruba-speaking side of the Nigerian movie industry today marched against domestic violence and jungle justice in Nigeria. The home movie makers took school children along with them, demonstrating that children have prominence for future and should be properly treated. 

They scold parents/guardians to desist from abusing their children/wards. While calling on government to be more pro-active on policy initiation and implementation to protect women and children. The protesters condemned jungle justice, citing the case of sodomy of three women who were tortured and sodomized for allegedly stealing pepper at Ejigbo market.

LASU Riot Update: University shut down indefinitely



 Lagos State School ((LASU) has been turn off indefinitely following what the college termed'crazy protest by students '.   The college management provided the bulletin over launching the long closure, and asked all students to vacate the college premises until further notice. Exams have already been defer until further notice.   Trouble began at the School yesterday after the VC Prof. David Obafunwa declined to re-open the registration site for around 1200 students left to join up for examinations. Linda was found guilty of the assault nowadays and will undoubtedly be sentenced on March 7th.


Robbers attack, left gun in Lagos church (Pictures)



The Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos, has apprehended a six-man robbery gang which allegedly attacked a church, Christ Authority and Power Evangelical Ministry, in the Ijanikin area of the state during the church’s crossover service on January 1, 2014. The suspects, Adewale Osoja, Bala Yahaya, Hasan Ado, Ahmed Boladele, Abiodun Olanrewaju and Abbey Edward, were said to have stolen the church’s offering and also robbed members of the congregation of their Ipads, phones, jewellery and other valuables.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court, Gudu, Abuja, has sentenced a 24-year-old student of Industrial Engineering of the Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Bello Onimisi, to three months imprisonment.
The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in an electronic mail on Wednesday that the court, presided over by Justice Adebunkola Banjoko, found Onimisi guilty on two counts of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence.

‘Why we hate the police’ - A soldier Opens up




A few weeks ago, precisely in the closing weeks of 2013, a rather disturbing but not entirely surprising piece of news almost went unnoticed: A group of soldiers numbering about 100 from the 31st Artillery Brigade, Minna, Niger State had stormed a police station in the town and held the officers hostage. Their mission of course was not to pay a courtesy visit in the spirit of ‘espirit de corps. The soldiers were on a revenge mission.

In fulfillment of his electioneering promise and further demonstration that the present administration is spreading development round the State, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Tuesday handed over the 2.68km Alaba/Cemetery road in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government , urging residents of the area not to convert the walkways to stalls in order to ensure the safety of school children.
