Botswana Sends 300 Nigerians Backhome

In a most shameful development, no fewer than 300 Nigerians living in the Republic of Botswana have been reportedly deported in the past few months, after the authorities refused to renew their permits. Of course, Botswana is one of the most peaceful countries on the continent and the country also ranks 132 on Transparency International’s (TI) 2011 Corruption Perception Index, making it one of the most corruption-free countries on the continent as well. Meanwhile, the angry deportees want President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Assembly to quickly look into the relations between Botswana and Nigeria in order to ascertain the true conditions of Nigerians living in that country.

The returnees, most of whom had lived and worked in the Southern African country, said since the assumption of the current president, General Khama, whose mother was of British origin, Nigerians in that country had been subjected to dehumanising conditions and racial abuse, even when, they claimed, they had been law-abiding and of good behavior. They believe that that the target of the Khama government had been how to get rid of innocent Nigerians pursuing a just course or doing genuine businesses in the country, claiming that all their efforts to make the Bostwana authorities understand that they were peace-loving and not interested in criminal activities fell on deaf ears as they were only interested in sending them out without any reason.

Odi Massacre: How FG Killed Old Men, Women –Jonathan

Says no militant died in the military action

By RAZAQ BAMIDELE, NDUBUISI ORJI, CHINELO OBOGO, SAM OTTI (Lagos) and JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE (Abuja)

Several years after the bombardment of Odi Community in Bayelsa State by the military, President Goodluck Jonathan said it did not succeed in curbing militancy in Niger Delta.

Jonathan said rather, it worsened militancy in the region and attracted international outcry against the Federal Government.

Jonathan, who disclosed this yesterday during a presidential media chat in Abuja, also said it was too early for him to declare whether or not he will contest the 2015 election. He said if the military action in Odi had stopped militancy, there would have not been any need for the amnesty programme for militants in the Niger Delta initiated by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

Two Drug Traffickers To Spend 14 Years In Prison

Two drug traffickers arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja, will spend the next 14 years in prison.

The convicts, Mbechi Obiageli Susan, 38, and Obiora Boniface Okechukwu, 36, according to Justice Chukwu Evoh of the Federal High Court, Abuja, will spend seven years each in prison over unlawful importation of narcotics. Justice Evoh, in his ruling, said both convicts will serve the prison term for pleading guilty to unlawful importation of narcotics without wasting the time of the court.

He held that the convicts had shown sufficient remorse and that the court expected them to turn a new leaf and contribute to the development of the country after completing their jail terms.

Susan, with Nigerian international passport number A00288396, had claimed she was three months pregnant when stopped for routine search on her way from Sao-Paulo, Brazil. She warned that scanning machine could harm her unborn baby. However, when placed under observation, she excreted 51 pellets of cocaine weighing 900 grammes.

She hails from Oduma village in Enugu State. Okechukwu arrived from Brazil and was arrested for ingesting 91 pellets of cocaine weighing 1.6kg.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, asked others to learn from the convicts experience.

“Drug trafficking kills dreams. It is expected that others outside that are contemplating drug trafficking will learn from this sentence and shun the criminal act”, he stated.
