Lagos State Introduces ''MERRIMENT TAX'' For Every Party Celebration ( What Do You Think?)



Have you ever heard of merriment tax? Lagos State Government says residents of Lagos spend more than N1 billion on merriment and entertainment monthly.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, MrAdemorin Kuye, gave the figure at a news conference organised to mark Gov.Babatunde Fashola`s sixth year in office.

He said the figure was derived from a research recently conducted by the Ministry of Budgeting and Planning, which showed that the residents spent a lot of money on entertainment. Kuye lamented that the benefits of entertainment had not been fully tapped to boost revenue generation in terms of taxes. "There is merriment tax in the constitution, it is part of the rates local governments can collect. We have not fully utilised the benefit of the entertainment industry in this state. "Over N1 billion is spent monthly in Lagos state on entertainment, we have the records to confirm this and these people, how many of them pay tax?

Eid-el-Kabir: Osun govt. offers free train service



Osun State Government is to provide a free train service for its people during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, according to the Commissioner for Commerce and Cooperatives, Mr. Ismail Alagbada.

He said in a statement on Monday in Osogbo that the free service would be offered between Wednesday and October 28.

Alagbada said the train would by 9a.m convey people from Lagos to Osogbo on Wednesday and Thursday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The return journey to Lagos would start by 10a.m on October 27 and October 28, the commissioner added.

According to him, the gesture is aimed at facilitating stress-free homecoming for the people during the Muslim festival.

The state government had made similar arrangements for people of the state in 2011.

Jonathan to address Nigerians on Independence Day



Nigeria @ 52: President Goodluck Jonathan tis expected to make a national broadcast on Monday, October 1 at 7a.m, as part of Nigeria’s 52nd Independence Day celebration.

There will also be a ceremonial Change of Guards by the Nigerian Army at 9.30a.m at the State House.

On Sunday, Jonathan attended an interdenominational service in Abuja, where he declared that God would see Nigeria through its current challenges.
