People lament as Ramadan pushes up food prices



The surge in the prices of some major foods items, including fruits, due to the Ramadan fasting and the effects of violence in some northern areas of the country has become a source of worry for Nigerians.
Investigations by our correspondent revealed that the prices of some staple foods had recorded over100 per cent increase in recent times.

For instance, the price of a bunch of banana, had increased from N800 before the commencement of the Ramadan fasting to N1,500 in most markets in Lagos, representing an increase of 87.5 per cent, while 12 pieces of orange, which sold for N700 a month ago, is now selling for N1,200, representing 71 per cent.

Ewww, disgusting! :-). Ọmọ Oódua reader allegedly found cockroach in her Chinese food bought in one of the upscale restaurants in Lagos. Below is how she explains it...
"In this day and age of health and safety. If I bought food from Mama put I would understand but this is Chinese from... (I removed the name)
We were having a meeting at work and decided to order lunch, we ordered Chinese, I had the chicken sweet corn soup and saw this roach in my soup on top o!
Eh! Why should they do this? It's ridiculous!
May not be totally ridiculous. I hear in some places, roaches are a delicacy. You for taste am first before complaining na! You know what they say, don't knock it till you try it. Lol. #kidding!

Heartless: Hungary Man kills 85-year-old grandpa in Ibadan over food



2013 Ramadan turned sour for the Adigun family of Abiola Central community, Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, as one of the youths in the family, Mutiu Tiamiyu, inflicted injury on the head of the family, Pa Nasiry Adigun, which led to his death on Tuesday night.

According to reports, Pa Adigun, who was visually impaired, was prevailed upon by his family members to observe Tarawhi prayer at home while other household members had gone to mosque.

However, the attention of neighbours and worshipers at the village mosque and its environs was drawn to the noise of a young boy who kept on shouting the suspect’s name around the village. Before people got to the scene of the incident, Pa Adigun was already on the ground, bleeding profusely.

A member of Kirenowa community, a distant village in Borno State previously occupied by members of the extremist group, Boko Haram has said that the insurgents plundered and destroyed their communities. Speaking in a exclusive interview with Channels Television's correspondent, who visited the village in the organization of the military Special Force, Nneota Egbe, the villager said the insurgents forcefully collect the crops harvested by members of the community. "They collected our cars and even our food. Those farming were forced to harvest their millet and maize and they (the terrorists) took them (the food stuff) to their camps," he said. He said the terrorists be aware of ladies that are about 18 years and forcefully marry them.

EXCLUSIVE: Hardship Hits Nigerian Troops In Mali As Officers Solicit Food From Locals



The condition of Nigerian troops in Mali is quickly sliding from bad to worse as inadequate supply of provision is forcing the contingent to solicit food from locals, PREMIUM TIMES can exclusively report.
According to a reliable defence source who asked not to be named, the Nigerian contingent solicits food and handouts under the guise of “courtesy calls” to community leaders in Mali. After one of such courtesy calls on Monday, the troops received a handout of a cow and 50 bags of rice from the Prefect of Tuban in Banamba region. “Our officers and men have resorted to begging locals for cows and rice for survival,” said the official.
“This is done by way of courtesy calls. They invite the prefects of the locals to our camp for visits. The prefect of Tuban (Banamba Region) visited today (Feb 11) with a cow and 50 bags of rice.”

Man Poisons Wife's Toothpaste, Food And Body Lotion



Police have arrested a 25-year-old Zimbabwean man who is suspected to have laced his wife's toothpaste, food and body lotion with poison following a nasty domestic dispute.

Kudakwashe Tsiga is in police custody, assisting police with investigations into the incident which occurred on Monday, 21 January. Police have identified the complainant, Tsiga's wife, as Rejoice Zingwe (25), who is employed as a nurse at Gweru Provincial Hospital.

Lagos State Assembly to regulate activities of fast food producers





Suuru Avoseh, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, says that the House will soon enact a law that would check the excesses of fast food producers.
Avoseh, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Health Services, told said on Sunday in Lagos that most of the foods prepared by various restaurants were ``junk foods. ``And these junk foods are harmful to human health,’’ he stressed.

Food Poisoning Kills Emibrian, LKT’s Manager One Month After Wedding




Reports say Edlyne Records’ Artiste/Repatour manager (A&R), and artiste, LKT’s manager, Emmanuel Okoi, better known as Emibrian, is dead. Emibrian died today January 15 at Agege General hospital after weeks of battling an unknown ailment, which was later identified as poison. According to reports, series of tests were conducted to ascertain the nature of his ailment without any result until a recently conducted test revealed Emibrian was poisoned.
