Fashola warns LASTMA, KAI against extortion of Lagosians



The Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, has warned officials of the Lagos State Transport Management Authority, LASTMA, and Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, to desist from extorting money from Lagos residents under the guise of carrying out their duties.


Mr. Fashola, who spoke to the officers over the weekend, urged them to always discharge their responsibilities in a way that would not portray the state in a bad light.
“Your primary responsibility is to move traffic. If you have to make a choice between moving traffic and letting an offender go, let the offender go. I don’t need him; we need to keep traffic moving because moving traffic is the economy,” Mr. Fashola told the LASTMA officers.

Young man in search of his family is shot dead by an Isreali sniper (Graphic)



 This is the heartbreaking moment a young Palestinian man looking for his family  was shot by an Israeli sniper .The sad footage was captured by Muhammad Abdellah, an activist from the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement…


His team came across the young Palestinian man, who told them he was looking for his family, and that they followed him in an attempt to help him find his relatives.As they tried to make their way across a heavily damaged area, shots suddenly rang out.

Chidoka named aviation minister, Oyeyemi becomes FRSC boss





President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday named the former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Osita Chidoka, as the new Minister of Aviation.
He also named a former lecturer at the University of Abuja, Dr. Suleman Abubakar, as the Minister of National Planning and Deputy Chairman of the National Planning Commission.
Jonathan made the announcement after the swearing in of the two new ministers shortly before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

IMF Cautions US over Adverse Economic Impact of Ukraine, Mideast Crises.



- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday warned the United States of possible economic risks linked to the increasing geopolitical tensions surrounding Ukraine and Iraq.

In its annual report on the world’s biggest economy, the IMF said there exists a likelihood of a sharp escalation in the conflict surrounding Ukraine, as well as heightened geopolitical risk in the Middle East, which could lead to oil price spikes and disruptions in global financial, trade and commodity markets.

Russian Journalists Union Calls Sanctions Against Heads of Media Absurd





The list of Russian journalists banned from working in Ukraine is absurd and international community is most likely to condemn it, Russian Union of Journalists Chairman Vsevolod Bogdanov told RIA Novosti Wednesday.


“I do not believe that Europe or international community will take this absurd proposal positively,” he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk ordered to create a list of Russian citizens and companies that in Kiev’s opinion directly or indirectly support "terrorists" in the east.
The list compiled by Ukraine’s Interior Ministry includes the head of Russia’s Channel One Konstantin Ernst, director general of the VGTRK media holding Oleg Dobrodeev, heads of TNT, NTV, Ren-TV, Star TV and Life News as well as Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who was mistakenly named the chairman of TVC TV channel board.

597 Palestinians, One-Quarter Children, Killed in Israel’s Military Op in Gaza



Israel's Operation Protective Edge and ground invasion into the Gaza Strip has killed at least 597 Palestinians, including 152 children and 82 women, Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights, a nongovernmental organization based in the Gaza Strip, said in its most recent reports.
“According to the field investigations by Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights, as of 1 p.m. [10:00 GMT] today, on Tuesday 22 July 2014, at least 597 Palestinians have been verified as killed by the IOF [Israeli occupation forces]; including 152 children and 82 women,” the report said.

When He Ordered His Men To Stone Us, No One Talked, Al-Makura Will Be Impeached — Nasarawa Assembly



The Nasarawa state House of Assembly, yesterday revealed that they won’t stop their impeachment processes against their state governor, Tanko Al-Makura despite firm protests from citizens of the state.


The House Committee on Information Chairman, Baba Ibaku told Vanguard that they will make sure the impeachment was carried out so as not be seen as liars, and said that the mass protest were boys of the governor who where paid to make noise and out the state in crisis.

Latest reports coming in from northern Nigeria suggest that Nigeria’s former Head of State, Gen Muhamadau Buhari was the target of one of the bomb attacks that happened in Kaduna on Wednesday, 23 July, 2014.

Sahara Reporters reports that a source close to Buhari informed that a second bomb explosion that rocked the Kawo bus station in Kaduna today appeared to have targeted Buhari’s convoy.

PM News reports that the incident occurred at about 11 p.m. when a heavy rainstorm started sweeping away everything in its path including high tension wire that have fallen off the loose wooden poles. According to the residents of Ejigbo area, one of the locals,  Baba Sadiq, who tried to save his family was electrocuted to death, at least 15 houses was razed down and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.

Over 50 Feared Dead As Passenger Plane Crashes in Taiwan




Over 50 were killed after a plane crash landed in Taiwan, according to Taiwanese media reports. Seven people were reportedly injured in the crash.  According to Taiwan’s Civil aeronautics Administration Shen Chi, 51 people are dead and seven people injured. While the local fire chief put death toll at 45.

Asari-Dokubo's Group Warns Northerners To Vacate The South



The Mujahid Dokubo-Asari-led Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Front, NDPSF has warned Northerners living in the South to leave the region.

This is coming on the heels of a 2-week ultimatum given by a group of Northern youthsunder the aegis of Arewa Youth Development Foundation (AYDF), to Southerners currently living in the North, to relocate to their respective states.
According to National Mirror report, the Asari-led group who said the southerners are not slaves to the north, called for a ‘Republic of Niger Delta’.

North Gets 60% Of Our Donations - British High Commissioner to Nigeria



British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Andrew Pocock yesterday revealed that out of all the British government’s donation to Nigeria, 60% are allocated to the Northern part of the nation.

Mr pocock explained the reason behind such high donations for the north, he said Britain really wants the development of the northern region, He said: “60 per cent of the British development assistance that we put into this country comes into the Northern Nigeria”.

3-Man Car-Snatching thieves Nabbed



The Lagos State Anti-Robbery Patrol Team has arrested three young men infamous for snatching exotic cars around Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah axis of Lagos State.

The three man gang,  Rasheed Yusuf, 20, Ade Yemi, 22, and Toyin Ajayola, 22, according to Vanguard, operate using charms, guns and other ammunition which were in their possession at the point they were arrested. Although the policemen attached to the Bar Beach Police Station around the area arrested the trio, two of the gang (Ade and Toyin) escaped but were later re-arrested at a face-off with the policemen around Cowrie Bridge outward Victoria Island on Monday night after they newly snatched a taxi at Orile Iganmu area of Lagos state.

EFCC set to declare Nyako wanted



The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has concluded arrangements to declare the impeached Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, wanted.  The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, made this known to   one of our correspondents in a telephone interview in Abuja on Tuesday.
Uwujaren explained that the commission was set to do so   because Nyako had been elusive since his removal by the members of the state House of Assembly last week. 
He said, “Since Nyako was removed, he has been elusive. So the commission has devised a strategy to declare him wanted. The commission is planning to declare him wanted.”

US Senators Call for New Sanctions on Russia



US senators called on their President Barack Obama to impose new sanctions against Russia, specifically the energy, finance and defense sectors of Russia’s economy, a letter from the senators addressed to the US president said.
“We urge you to implement your power in order to impose broader sanctions against Russia’s defense sector immediately, including state company Rosoboronexport. Russians must stop providing weapons, equipment and training to separatists in eastern Ukraine. We also urge you to consider further sanctions targeting energy, finance and other sectors of Russian economy,” the letter said.
