Israel responds to attacks: war jets strike Gaza



Israeli war jets carried out several airstrikes early Thursday, targeting training facilities that belong to the Islamic Hamas movement in northern Gaza Strip and Gaza city, security officials said. Officials in Gaza said several explosions damaged northern and central Gaza Strip as well as eastern and western Gaza city. Israeli jets hovered over the coastal enclave before carrying out the strikes, reports DPA.

Why Nigeria Could Not Defeat Iran – Keshi Opens up



The Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi has revealed why the team, yesterday, June 17 ended up with a goalless draw with Iran in their first match at the on-going FIFA World Cup in Brazil. 
Stephen Keshi told FIFA.COM that he blamed their performance on lack of inspiration.
He said: 

"We played very well in the first half. The forwards were very active and they had a couple of chances to score, though we couldn't put them away. We lost our shape in the second half," he said. "I felt we could have won the game but we were lacking a bit of inspiration on the pitch."

2 women bags 5 months each for slapping a police man in Abuja



An Upper Area court in Zuba, FCT, on Wednesday sentenced two women – Binta Mamman, 35, and Safiya Aliyu, 19, both of Deidei, Abuja, to five months imprisonment for slapping a police man.

The women had also been charged with using abusive language and public nuisance.

Malam Aminu Sa’ad, the presiding judge, handed down the sentence after the women pleaded guilty to the three-count charge of criminal force and assault, use of abusive language and public nuisance.

Sa’ad ruled that on the first count of criminal force and assault, the convicts shall serve a jail term of one month each without an option of fine.

More than 20 unknown poems by Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda found in archives



Researchers have found more than 20 previously unknown poems of the world famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Experts plan to publish them in late 2014 - early 2015, reports TV channel Telesur. Specialists from "Pablo Neruda Foundation" discovered it, during their research through the writer's archives. Poems, some of which are written by hand, and some - typed, were found in one of the boxes that belonged to the writer.

American fighters begin reconnaissance flights over Iraq



American F-18 fighter from the aircraft carrier "George Herbert Walker Bush" in the Persian Gulf began to fly reconnaissance missions over Iraq. This was reported on Wednesday TV "Fox News." According to its sources in the Pentagon, one of the goals of these flights is to demonstrate US commitment to decisive action on the situation in Iraq.

"It is not that important to see something, but to be seen," said the representative of the US military. He stressed that the F-18 are exactly fighter planes.

US arrests alleged 89-year-old Auschwitz guard



An 89-year-old man has been arrested and denied bail in the United States for alleged war crimes as a teenage Nazi guard at Auschwitz. Johann Breyer, a retired machinist born in Czechoslovakia to a US mother, admits joining the SS aged 17 but denies being a guard at the concentration camp in German-occupied Poland. He emigrated to the United States after the Second World War got married and now has children and grandchildren.

Russian delegation not to attend PACE session - Russia's MP



Russia will not attend the upcoming session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in spite of the appeal of the PACE president to State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin.

"PACE President Anne Brasseur asked State Duma Speaker Naryshkin in a recent telephone conversation to send the Russian delegation, even with limited powers, [to the session] for continuing the dialogue with Russia. We do not think it will be expedient to continue the seeming dialogue under these circumstances because the dialogue is possible only between equal partners," 

Cuba hopes to cooperate with Rosneft



Cuba hopes to cooperate with the Russian oil corporation Rosneft when it develops its new oilfields, the Cuban Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Ruben Cid who is taking part in the World Oil Congress in Moscow said to Itar-Tass Wednesday. CUPET and Rosneft signed a memorandum recently in St Petersburg, under which the two companies will do the joint development of oilfields on the Cuban continental shelf.

Obama discusses situation in Iraq with Сongress leaders



US President Barack Obama discussed with Сongress leaders deteriorating situation in Iraq where extremists seized a number of major cities, stated the White House. House Speaker John Boehner, as well as heads of Republican and Democrat parties in Congress - Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell and Nancy Pelosi were invited to the meeting with the President.

Obama's Iraq policy fuels terrorism - Dick Cheney



Bush-era vice president Dick Cheney savaged President Barack Obama for his alleged Iraq policy failure Wednesday, warning that a shrinking US military posture could fuel terrorism.

In a blistering op-ed in that Wall Street Journal, Cheney accused Obama of pursuing "fantasy" policies that weaken the US armed forces, embolden terror networks like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and reduce Washington's ability to influence global events.

Donetsk miners threaten to take arms if Kiev continues military operation



“The people of the DPR will fight. First of all the foreign enemy, and then oligarchs’ turn will come,” TASS cites an official of the self-proclaimed republic as saying.

Miners from the Donetsk Region in eastern Ukraine will take arms if the Kiev authorities do not stop their military operation in the region within two days, a deputy coal industry minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Konstantin Kuznetsov, said Wednesday.

FG drops ₦ 100b stolen funds charges against Mohammed Abacha



The Federal Government today Wednesday June 18th withdrew the corruption charges filed against Mohammed Abacha, son of former military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
 
Mohammed who played an important role during his late father's administration is believed to have helped the late dictator launder plenty of stolen funds. The FG had accused Mohammed Abacha of receiving stolen property worth N100.38 billion, lots of it kept in foreign countries.

 
The Federal government recently asked the US govt to return another $500 million recently frozen by the U.S. as part of funds stolen by the late dictator.

Adamawa Assembly start impeachment proceedings against their state governor



The Adamawa State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against their state governor, Murtala Nyako, and his deputy, Bala Ngilari. The Assembly today Wednesday June 18th directed its clerk to serve the governor and his deputy an impeachment notice.  Nyako has been having problems with the Assembly members since leaving the PDP to join the APC.

‘Boko Haram plans to bomb Abuja with petrol tankers’ - SSS reveals



The SSS today Wednesday June 18 said the Boko Haram sect is planning to bomb Abuja with petrol tankers next few days. The Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, made this known at a briefing in Abuja alongside the Deputy Director of the DSS, Marilyn Ogar

Lagos Man Allegedly Attacks Ghanaian With Machete For Mocking Super Eagles



After the Nigeria vs. Iran World Cup match that ended in a scoreless draw, many fans of the Super Eagles were upset about the outcome of the game.
However, one man Sunday Usman, was so upset, that he allegedly attacked some viewers, including a Ghanaian for mocking the Nigerian team for their inability to score a goal, Usman was reportedly drunk when he attacked the fans on Monday night at a football viewing center in the Ilasan area of Lekki, Lagos.

Woman sets Ex-Boyfriend ablaze During Reconcilation.




 This is inhuman act, how could this beautiful lady get herself into such a mess. The police in Benin, the Edo State capital, southern Nigeria, have arrested and detained a 35-year-old woman, Esohe Ogbewei, for allegedly setting her ex-lover ablaze.


Esohe was said to have poured petrol on her victim whose name was given as Peter Osayi, before setting him ablaze. The severe burns the victim suffered led to his death.  It was reliably gathered from the Osayi family members that the deceased had a dispute with the suspect and she invited him for settlement.  According to the family sources, it was during the settlement that the suspect allegedly poured petrol on her ex-lover and set him ablaze.

The Strongman of Oyo State Politics died in London at the early hours of today.
Abdulazeez Arisekola Alao is a notable Nigerian businessman and contractor who was the publisher of the now defunct Monitor Newspaper. He is considered a wealthy businessman who is known for his causes in support of Islam in Ibadan and his close ties to many of the city’s traditional and religious elites and to various other Yoruba Muslim leaders. He bears the title of Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland.

Boko Haram militants attack football viewing center in Damaturu



Boko Haram men tonite attacked a football viewing center in Damaturu, Yobe State during a live football match between Brazil and Mexico in the ongoing world cup in Brazil.  The sect men reportedly hauled explosives at the viewing center, injuring several people. Injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals. Yobe state Police commissioner told AFP that they have deployed policemen to the scene and gives details on the incident later. Update: Seven people have been reported killed in the blast.
