Schoolgirls: Mark insists FG won’t negotiate with B’Haram



Senate President, David Mark, on Saturday ruled out any form of negotiation with Boko Haram insurgents for the release of the over 200 girls abducted from Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State.
He said the insurgents had declared war on the country, saying the government would respond likewise.
Mark said this at Ikom, Cross River State, during an empowerment programme organised by the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, for the people of the central senatorial district.

General Murtala Muhammed, Nigeria’s 4th Head of State, is regarded as one of the best and progressive leaders Nigeria ever had. He was in power from July 29, 1975 to February 13, 1976 when he was assassinated in an abortive coup attempt led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka. He was succeeded by General Olusegun Obasanjo who completed General Murtala’s plan to return Nigeria to a civilian rule in 1979. Murtala’s portrait is on the 20 Naira note and Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos was named after him.
He died at the age of 37 and was survived by his wife Ajoke Muhammed and children. He is widely regarded as a national hero.

Obama makes surprise visit to Afghanistan



US President Barack Obama landed in Afghanistan on Sunday for a surprise Memorial Day weekend visit with US troops to thank forces who are preparing to withdraw after nearly 13 years of war, Reuters reports. He said his administration was likely to announce soon on how many US troops to keep in Afghanistan after 2014.

LifeNews journalists, Oleg Sidyakin and Marat Saychenko, who were detained in Ukraine about a week ago and released on Saturday evening, claim to have spotted several mercenaries at Kramatorsk airfield in the eastern Donetsk region. "There were lots of mercenaries at the airfield. There were people dressed in uniforms that aren’t typical of Ukraine. They talked to no one and walked into the headquarters in silence. We still can’t figure out who those people might be," Sidyakin told a press conference on Sunday.

Fight against Boko haram: Military has received ₦130b from Jan - April - Okonjo-Iweala



While presenting the 2014 budget signed last week by Pres. Jonathan to newsmen, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Finance Minister revealed that the Nigerian military has received N130.7billion from the Federal Government from January to April 2014 and that another N3.8b has been approved by the president but was still being processed and will soon be released to the military.

Voter turnout in 182 Ukraine's districts stands at 17.52 percent at noon - CEC



The voter turnout in the Ukrainian presidential election stood at 17.52 percent as at 12 p.m. local time, according to the electronic flashboard at the Central Election Commission (CEC). The figure represents turnout in 182 out of 213 electoral districts. "Voter activity is very high - 17.52 percent. This is much more than we predicted," deputy head of CEC Zhanna Usenko-Chorna said at a briefing at the CEC on Sunday.

The highest turnout was registered in Kiev region (22.71 percent of voters) and slightly less in Kirovograd region (22.07 percent), Cherkassy region (21.66 percent), Khmelnitsky region (21.37 percent), Chernigov region (21.14 percent) and Poltava region (20.91 percent).

19-Year-Old Student, Alyssa Funke, Killed Herself after she was bullied by class






Immediately, Funke started getting harassed on social media, people began sending her abusive messages through Twitter and Facebook. At first, Funke seemed unfazed by the cyberbullying, posting defiant messages on Facebook and Twitter.

Explosion in Jos, Police Cordon The Scene, Appeal for calm





An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) believed to have been detonated by a suspected suicide bomber has gone off in the city of Jos. The incident occurred today 24th May, 2014 at about 8:30pm along Bauchi road, near Red Cross, when a vehicle borne-IED went off, killing the occupant – a suspected suicide bomber and two innocent persons. Two other persons sustained injuries of various degree and have since been rushed tonearby hospital.

Magnitude 6.4 earthquake shakes Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria



An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck off the coast of northern Greece on Saturday, sending panicked residents into the streets in Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, officials said. In Turkey about 270 people were hospitalized, most with minor injuries, as a tremor shook buildings, the government disaster and emergency department said.

The quake also rattled Turkey’s most populous city, Istanbul, as well as the Aegean coastal city of Izmir and the popular tourism province of Antalya on the Mediterranean coast.

The self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics have merged in one state.

The Donetsk People’s Republic’s twitter reports that the two republics have signed their merger in one state, Novorossiya.
On the part of the Donetsk Republic, the document was signed by Prime Minister Alexander Borodai and on the part of the Lugansk Republic, by head of the republic Aleksey Karyakin, the microblog reports.

President Vladimir Putin on Saturday described British Prince Charles' reported comparison of the Russian leader with Nazi German dictator Adolf Hitler as an act of "non-royal behavior."
"I haven't heard this phrase. If it is true, it is, of course, unacceptable. I think he realizes this. He is a well-mannered person. I have met him and other members of the royal family. It's non-royal behavior," Putin said at a meeting in St. Petersburg with the chiefs of global news agencies, Interfax reports.
