Trade Union Congress (TUC): Kill public official who steals above ₦1m



The Trade Union Congress has recommended death  penalty for public officials who embezzle beyond N1m in order to reduce corruption in the country.
The President of the TUC, Bobboi Kaigama, said this during the fourth lecture series of the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Tuesday.
While speaking on the theme, ‘Corruption and challenges in nation-building’, Kaigama noted that Nigeria needed to go tougher in its war against corruption.
He said that leaders had no reason not to declare their assets.

I didn’t stop Diezani’s probe –Judge



Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja  on Tuesday denied claims by the House of Representatives that he issued an order stopping investigations into the  allegations that Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, spent N10bn to charter a private jet  for her trips in the last two years.

 The  judge therefore summoned the House   to appear before the court on May 5 to “clear the air” on the  issue.

Police arrest vice-principal for raping pupil



The police in Ekiti State have arrested a 57-year-old Vice-Principal of St. Mary Girls College, Ikole Ekiti, Mr. Ayo Ajayi, for allegedly raping a 12-year-old pupil of the school inside his office.
Our correspondent gathered that the pupil had gone to the office of the vice-principal on March 18 and she did not come out as quickly as expected. This was said to have fueled the suspicion of some teachers.

One of the teachers, who reported the case to the police, was said to have moved closer to the door to open it but discovered that the door had been locked from inside.
She was said to have knocked on the door and the pupil and the suspect allegedly hurriedly stopped what they were busy doing inside.

Govs’ removal: Falana tells Jonathan to ignore Clark



Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to ignore a call by a First Republic minister and prominent Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, to remove the governors of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, on the account of subsisting emergency rule in the states.  Falana said in a statement on Tuesday that the call was diversionary and the act of removing elected governors or suspending democratic institutions during emergency rule in a state was illegal.

Five persons have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over allegation of fraudulent transfer of a total of N5, 550,000.00 (Five Million, Five Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) from an account in Skye Bank.

The suspects, Ademola Okunlola, 36; Tajudeen Oluwanisola, 41; Kolawole Adams, 52; Temitope Pedro, 27; Bayo Olowoyo, 39 and Otunba Biodun Adebanjo, 56, were picked up in different locations in Lagos by operatives of the anti- graft agency for allegedly effecting the fraudulent transfer of N5, 550,000.00 from the account of one Ajani Kareem Musibau domiciled in Skye Bank Plc. .........

Nyanya, Abuja blast: Experts identify bodies of two bombers



Forensic  experts  have successfully established the identities of two men that  participated in  the bombing  of  Nyanya, a satellite community bordering the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa State  on  April 14, 2014.
Security sources told one of our correspondents in Abuja  on Monday  that the experts   identified  their  bodies  using certain scientific variables, including body tissues.
It was learnt that they also   identified the third suicide bomber, who managed to escape from the scene before the explosion.

ABUJA- FORMER governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Solomon Alamieyeseigha Monday lampooned former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of having the list  of oil thieves in Nigeria, but he shielded them during his administration.
Alamieseigha also declared that 50 percent of Nigerian oil was stolen daily and  accused foreign embassies of having full knowledge of illegal purchase of crude oil from Nigeria.

350 properties absorbed, 1,000 displaced by flood in Calabar




An unprecedented flood has wreaked havoc in Calabar metropolis, Cross River State, destroying over 350 houses and displacing about 1,000 persons.

The ravaging flood, which occurred following a six-hour downpour yesterday morning, adversely affected mobility in most parts of the city.

Areas worst hit by the flood include Target-Goldie and Mayne Avenue, Marian road, Diamond Hill axis, Ete-Agbor street MCC, Wapi junction Marian and Ediba within Calabar South and Municipal council.

Also affected were Yellow Duke, some departments in the University of Calabar and the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) staff quarters in Calabar South Local Government which were submerged.

GEJ Dumps Gulak as political adviser



President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday terminated the appointment of his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, announced this on his Twitter page.  Abati said the President thanked Gulak for his services to the current administration and wished him success in his future endeavours.  He however didn't give reason for the sack.

Certainly, these are not the best of times for popular actress, Laide Bakare, as she seems to have been caught in the web of the face-off involving her husband, Alhaji Atanda Orilowo, a.k.a ATM, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over a multi-billion Naira estate project in Lagos.

Her husband had threatened to go to court to put a stop to the intimidation by EFCC and settle all the issues once and for all, but it seems the man was just bragging. He has not been seen and the anti-corruption body say Alhaji Orilowo is on the run.
They've now been empowered to take over his properties.

Manchester United records easy win as Giggs makes managerial bow



Ryan Giggs’ spell as interim Manchester United manager began on a positive note on Saturday, the Red Devils romping to a commanding win over Norwich.
Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata netted two goals each for United, who piled yet more relegation woe on the Canaries at Old Trafford. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand paired up in defence for the hosts, with Danny Welbeck starting in attack. Mata was on the bench, with Adnan Januzaj and Marouane Fellaini left out entirely. For the away side, Gary Hooper was among the substitutes despite scoring against Liverpool last weekend.

United started on the front foot, with Antonio Valencia prominent on the right flank. Norwich almost grabbed a shock opener, however, Jonny Howson seeing his effort chalked off for a foul in the area.  United’s first chance fell to Welbeck, whose powerful effort was palmed away by John Ruddy at his near post. The England striker would continue to threaten, however, and played a crucial role in the opener.

Alison-Madueke gets court injunction stopping house of reps from probing ₦10b jet scandal



Minister of Petroleum, Dieziani Alison-Madueke, who has been in the midst of a 10bn jet scandal has secured a court injunction stopping the House of Representatives from further investigating her, Premium Times reports. Alison-Madueke had approached a federal high court in Abuja where she asked the court to restrain the House members to discontinue any probe involving her.

Justice.R. Mohammed who presided within the case, barred the home members or their committees  from summoning her for further investigations as well as ordering her arrest if she failed to a[appear before the house. In accordance with reports, the court injuction was secured on April 14th but was just made public today while the House designed to commence further investigation on the situation today.

Nollywood's Prolific director Amaka Igwe dies at 51



 Foremost producer, writer, director and a number one player in the Nigerian film industry, Amaka Igwe has passed on. She died yesterday evening April 28th in Enugu after an asthma attack. Mrs Igwe had opted to Enugu in company of her husband for pre-production preparations for a brand new Igbo soap when the sad incident occurred.

She suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to a medical facility after initial intervention had failed but sadly died before getting there. 

Mrs Igwe is survived by her husband of 21 years Charles Igwe, three children, an aged mother. So sad! May her soul rest in peace...Ase. Continue...

APC Chieftain who turned wife to punching bag arrested by Sagamu police



The APC chieftain, Bashorun Bayo Awosanya, who battered his wife at their residence in Sagamu on Easter Sunday April 20th (read here) after a quarrel was arrested and detained by the Ogun State police command yesterday.  He's currently at the Sagamu Police Station in Ogun State
"The suspect personally reported himself to the Sagamu Divisional Police Officer, CSP Lawal Adebowale, around 0800hrs due to arrest warrants issued and pressure mounted on him to show up before he would be publicly declared wanted by the police" the PPRO of the Ogun State Command in a statement.

Woman eliminates her own new born baby because he looked too much like her ex-boyfriend



18-year-old Ana Rosa Mora (pictured above) has been arrested for killing her own child because the the new born looked like her ex-boyfriend. Ana wrapped her baby in a bag and left him outside to die because she feared the child looked like her ex-boyfriend and her current boyfriend would leave her.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the teen gave birth last weekend and attended school on Monday after allegedly committing the act and even showed staff members pictures of a newborn girl that she claimed she downloaded from the Internet.

But after employees noticed strange behavior - such as the girl asking if authorities could link her to the child through DNA and lying about the baby's age - they alerted authorities. Continue...

Women to stage one-million march in Abuja over abducted girls



Nigerian women would on Wednesday April 30th in Abuja stage a one-million-women march tagged "Free our girls" to press for the release of the schoolgirls that were abducted from Girls Government college in Chibok, Borno state on Monday April 14th.
 
The call for the protest was made during an emergency meeting put together by the Borno state first lady, Hajia Nana Kashim Shettima, yesterday. Coordinator of the protest Prof. Hauwa Abdu Biu said the march is expected to involve every woman in the country.
"The last time, we were in black but this time around the colour for the Abuja rally is red; so we should all be prepared and mobilize ourselves for the rally”, she said

Video: Daughter receives beating of her life from Mum for Posting Semi-N*de pics on facebook




 A video showing a mother from Trinidad and Tobago whipping her 12-year-old daughter with a belt for sharing sexually explicit pics of herself on Facebook has gone viral, sparking a conversation about corporal punishment. 


Last Sunday, a video was posted on Facebook showing Helen Bartlett, a mother of four from Point Fortin, beating her daughter while hurling profanities at her. The 6 minute clip shows the angry mum raining blows on the girl , who whimpers in pain. Oyinbo people feel the beating is shocking and call it child abuse but we're Africans and some or most of us have somehow seen or experienced worse.
