Ariel Sharon, whose half century as a military and political leader in Israel was marked with victories and controversies, died Saturday after eight years in a coma, Israeli Army Radio reported. Sharon was 85.
Sharon died at Sheba Medical Center in the Tel Aviv suburb of Tel Hashomer.
The Israeli statesman was a national war hero to many Israelis for his leadership, both in uniform or as a civilian, during every Israeli war.

Chocolate City Saga Continues, Brymo returns to court.



The lingering legal battle between Chocolate City Entertainment and artiste, Ashimi Olawale Ibrahim popularly known as Brymo comes up on the 14th of January, Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.  The case was adjourned until 14th of January, after the presiding judge was unavoidable absence at the court leading to the suspension of the case.  The case reportedly has been adjourned twice following the November 11 adjournment before this latest one. However, the presiding judge wasn’t the only one missing as neither Brymo nor his counsel were available for the hearing leaving only Choc City’s counsel, C.O. Madubuko from L and A Legal Consultants the only party present. The legal battle between the two is as a result of Brymo’s unceremonious exit from the record label.



Obasanjo disowns PDP •Writes Tukur, copies Jonathan • PDP govs give conditions for peace!




President Olusegun Obasanjo has fired another letter, this time, to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, in which he gave a notice of his withdrawal from the activities of the party.
Obasanjo also sent a copy of the letter to President Goodluck Jonathan as National Leader of the party. A copy of the letter was obtained by the Saturday Tribune. 
The former president, in the letter, said he was withdrawing from all activities of the party because the PDP had been negating the principles of morality, decency and discipline in its decisions, especially as they affect the South West where he comes from.
The letter, dated January 7, 2014, according to a source at the national secretariat of the party, was received in the office of Tukur on Wednesday, 8 January, 2014. It is believed that President Jonathan also got his own copy on Thursday.

Cyprus OKs Russian aircrafts to use airbase near Pathos – media



Cyprus authorities have permitted Russian military aircrafts to use the Andreas Papandreou airbase, situated near Pathos, the Cyprus Weekly newspaper reports. An agreement on cooperation in this field is yet to be signed.

On Thursday, Defense Minister Photis Photiu, with the consent of the Foreign Minister, set forward a proposal to assist Russia in this field for the Cabinet’s consideration. Tunisia's new premier Mehdi Jomaa took office on Friday to lead a caretaker government until elections this year, the state news agency said, after the ruling Islamist party resigned in a deal to complete a transition to democracy.

US weighs targeted sanctions against South Sudan.



The United States is weighing targeted sanctions against South Sudan due to its leaders' failure to take steps to end a crisis that has brought the world's youngest nation to the brink of civil war, sources briefed on US discussions told Reuters.

"It's a tool that has been discussed," a source told Reuters on condition of anonymity about the possibility of US sanctions against those blocking peace efforts or fueling violence in South Sudan. Another source confirmed the remarks, though both declined to provide details on the precise measures under consideration.

White House still researching how to continue non-lethal supply to Syria rebels.



The White House said on Friday that it is still reviewing how to resume shipments of non-lethal aid to moderate rebel groups fighting in Syria after an incident last month where Islamist fighters seized supplies from a warehouse.

"No decisions have been made yet regarding the resumption of non lethal assistance to the (Syrian Military Council), but we have resumed deliveries of non-lethal assistance into northern Syria to civilian actors," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at a briefing.
"This has nothing to do with our support for the moderate military opposition, but rather the security of our assistance," Carney said.

Iran, six world powers end talks on Tehran's nuclear program, agree on outstanding issues



Iran's talks with the European Union have ended with an agreement over outstanding issues about the practical details of implementing a nuclear agreement, Iranian state television reported on Friday.

But the implementation of the deal reached in Geneva in November will take place after consultations with the capitals of Iran and the six major powers involved in the talks that were on Friday represented by the European Union, it said.
