Tragedy: Man lost his life on PHCN power line poles in Calabar



In early hours of this morning, residents in the Government Technical College, Lemna, Calabar, woke up to discover a man dried on PHCN power line poles, electrocuted. One resident said their lights went very early in the morning and they thought it absolutely was the typical PHCN blackout, only to get the man hanging from the poles at the break of dawn.  Police and other security agencies have arrived the area and efforts are ongoing to bring the man down and make proper identifications.

Photos: New Investors Take Over PHCN As Workers head to the street



President Goodluck Jonathan has handed  the share certificates and licenses to 14 new investors of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN successor companies with an assurance that things are certain to get better in the energy sector. Jonathan described the process of the privatization programme as probably the most transparent in the annals of privatization in the country.

Meanwhile PHCN staff aren't happy about this improvement because their salaries are yet to be paid. They protested today in Government offices in Abuja and Lagos, and also warned the new investors to stay away from power installations for the present time until their demands are met. FG Orders Massive Retrenchment Of PHCN Workers; 20,000 To Be Sacked





Thousands of workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, may lose their jobs as the Federal Government has ordered the retrenchment of no fewer than 20,000 ahead of takeover by successful bidders of its assets.
Bureau for Public Enterprises, BPE, issued the directive to the Chief Executive Officers, CEOs, of the 18 successor companies to PHCN at a meeting in Abuja, to compile names and drastically reduce the 50,000 strong workforce before the new investors take over, Vanguard reports, adding that the new investors demanded that the workforce must be pruned before government hands off.

₦170bn Not Enough For Our Severance Pay —PHCN Workers

Power Holding Company of Nigeria workers  have said that the N170bn the Federal Government says it is ready to pay as severance package to them  is grossly inadequate.
.The Secretary-General, National Union of Electricity Employees, Mr. Joe Ajaero, told our correspondent that the agreement reached with the government  never meant that all issues had been resolved. He noted that the government had also contradicted itself by saying it would pay about N170bn to the workers whereas the sum demanded by the workers was in excess of N500bn.

Community Decries PHCN’s Neglect, Insensitivity





The Ireakari-Olorunfunmi Estate Community Development Association, Idimu, Lagos State, has cried out over neglect and insensitivity by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria. The association said for close to one year, all entreaties to the PHCN, Idimu Business Unit, to change the community’s transformer panel and ‘upriser’ cable had fallen on deaf ears.

Sokoto State Governor Flogs PHCN Manager With "Koboko" Horse Whip Until He Became Unconscious




Governor of Sokoto State, Northwest Nigeria, Aliyu Wamakko, has allegedly flogged a manager of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, for failing to supply electricity to his community.

Premium Times, an online news portal reports that the governor flogged the manager and ordered his security officials to assault two other PHCN staff.

The management of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, KEDC, a subsidiary of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, accused the Governor of assaulting the workers.
