On 30th May 1967, after months of tensions in Nigeria, a separatist group dominated by (one of the country’s three major ethnicities based primarily in the eastern region), declared its secession from the state of Nigeria and established the independent Republic of Biafra. The refusal of the Nigerian government to recognize Biafra’s independence marked the beginning of a civil war that would last until January 1970.
