Shelling has struck Donetsk's Kievskaya area, inflicting casualties among civilians, reads the statement published on Donetsk's City Council's website Sunday.
"As of 13:00 p.m. [10:00 GMT], the situation in the city remains critically grave. The sounds of single shots from large-caliber weapons and artillery volleys do not subside. Once again, the shelling has struck Kievskaya Area – the neighborhood of Gladkovka. The units of the MES [Ministry of Emergency Situations] are in place. According to preliminary records, there are casualties among the civilian population. Due to military actions, tram services via route №1 have been stopped since 11:30 a.m. [08:30 GMT]," the statement reads.

On Saturday, it was reported that one civilian was killed and two were wounded in artillery shelling in Donetsk.  In April, Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation in the country's southeast, where independence supporters refused to accept the new government that was put in power following a coup in February.

The self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics in eastern Ukraine held referendums this May on self-determination. Over 90 percent of the voters cast their votes for greater autonomy, leading the republics to declare themselves sovereign states.

On September 5, a truce was brokered by Russia and the OSCE, which is for the most part maintained. However, the sides blame one another for violating it. Reports from DPR claim that the Ukrainian forces are firing shells at residential buildings from the area near the airport of Donetsk, thus forcing the independence supporters to open fire.
According to UN estimates, the conflict has so far killed over 3,600 people and injured over 8,500.
