Many Trapped In Abuja Building Collapse

Many people are reported to be trapped in a club house which is undergoing make over from a bungalow to a storey building in Abuja on Friday. The collapsed building is believed to trap many people under the rubbles most of whom are menial labourer and customers at Phase IV road in Jikwoyi, Abuja.

Four persons have been pulled out of the collapsed building alive by rescue workers hours after the incident and were immediately rushed in ambulances to nearby hospitals, while voices of those trapped under the rubbles calling were heard. Many of them called for help while informing the public that they were still alive.

Workers of the club named ‘Mimshack Arena’ were panicking, crying while showing rescue officials around the collapsed site. Daily Trust says one of them put the figure of people trapped at 13.

Residents claimed that the collapsed building belongs to a policeman called Corporal Joseph.

Emeka Ikechuckwu, a resident said some customers were drinking at the bar, while construction work was ongoing. He said the building caved in with people inside.

One of the rescue officials at the scene complained that buildings around the area were built with no space between them and that made it difficult for rescue vehicles to get to the victims.

Efforts to speak to the coordinator of the Abuja operations office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ishaya Chonoko, failed as calls to his phone were not answered.

Daily Trust later learnt that he was at the scene of the building collapse coordinating rescue operations.
