ENUGU — A group, Enugu Roots Initiative, ERI, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to compel security agencies to unravel the identity and the mission of the hoodlums who invaded Government House, Enugu, penultimate weekend, emphasising that such a serious matter should not be swept under the carpet.
It also commended the President for the flag-off of the 2nd Niger Bridge, and noted that the project would accelerate economic activities in the South-East and South-South zones.
In a communique issued at its enlarged meeting in Enugu, on the invasion of the Enugu Government House, the group condemned in strongest term such an act and called on President Jonathan to unravel the mystery and identity of the perpetrators, since the act was capable of bringing unbridled brigandage as currently witnessed in the North-East zone.
”What happened at Enugu Government House is to say the least, most despicable and akin to mutiny. It should not be glossed over at all. The perpetrators must be fished out and made to immediately face the full wrath of the law.
”This was how the problem the nation is facing today in the North-East started. It was the actions of some misguided elements which were glossed over and today, we are all witnessing the level of massacre and destruction of property and institutions going on in the zone,” the group said
In the communique signed by the chairman, Joni Icheka, and others, the group insisted that government should complement the 2nd Niger bridge by paying serious attention to the slow pace of work of the contractors handling Enugu/Onitsha expressway.
On the 2nd Niger Bridge, it applauded the President for the flag-off, but noted that it should take more than a flag-off to get the job done as it required concrete work-in-progress.
It lamented that even with the contractors, the state of the road had remained in a deplorable condition, wondering if the rehabilitation, which was awarded over three years ago, was being funded or properly monitored.
