Lagos Re-emphasises importance of good sanitation and personal Hygiene

Lagos State has re-emphasised the importance of observing good sanitary habit and personal hygiene by the citizens of the state in curbing the outbreak of Cholera, Polio and reducing malaria in the State.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris said this during the Monthly Stakeholders Meeting of the Ministry of Rural Development with Executive members of CDC, CDAC and Neighbourhood Watch coordinators in the 57LGs/LCDAs of the state.

According to the Commissioner, the State Executive Council had stressed the need to sensitize the people of the State through the representatives of CDAs, CDCs and Neighbourhood Watch coordinators on good sanitation and personal hygiene.

Dr. Idris noted that the State Government is spending huge resources to make sure that cholera and other water borne diseases do not thrive in the state with the construction of drainage facilities all over the state and provision of potable water in the rural and urban areas. He lamented the rate at which some people dump refuse in those drains thereby obstructing free flow of water.

He therefore urged the CDAs, CDCs and Neighbourhood Watchers to go back home and enlighten their people on the danger of these habits and also enjoined them to encourage their children and family to take necessary immunization as well as observe good sanitary habit & personal hygiene in their homes and environment to ensure a healthy life.

Dr. Idris said the Ministry of Health is ready to curb the spread of malaria through the introduction of House spraying exercise which has been ongoing for some time now and solicited the cooperation of the CDAs for the success of the exercise in their respective Local Government and LCDAs.

He urged them to also educate their people on the importance of observing the traffic laws with regards to Okada operations in areas where Okada is not prohibited to further reduce casualties. He seized the opportunity of the meeting to appeal to motorists to observe speed limit on the highways and use seat belts as well as desist from drinking while driving to reduce accidents on our roads particularly in Epe, Ijede, Ifako-Ijaye and Ebute Metta where high accident rates were recorded last year.

Commissioner for Transportation, Comrade, Kayode Opeifa enjoined the people to caution the activities of tricycle riders (Marwa/Keke Napep) in their areas since they are now constituting themselves to nuisance on our roads.

He further enlightened them on the need to educate their people who are public transport owners particularly Yellow bus owners and Yellow taxi drivers’ owners to register and paint their vehicles in the approved colour and design before the March 15 deadline or be barred from operating in the state.

He said all drivers and conductors of these vehicles must also register at the State Driver’s Institute for them to operate in the state.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Honourable Commissioner for Rural Development, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe urged the people to continue in their monitoring and protection of Government infrastructure in their domain and take ownership of the properties. He urged them on the need to educate their people that Government property is their property and so they must take ownership to protect them from vandalisation.

Other speakers at the event include the General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) Mrs. Abimbola Animashaun-Odunayo who urged the people to obtain building approvals before the commencement of any building construction to prevent building collapse.
