Target has released an official statement this morning:
"While we previously shared that encrypted data was obtained, this morning through additional forensics work we were able to confirm that strongly encrypted PIN data was removed. We remain confident that PIN numbers are safe and secure. The PIN information was fully encrypted at the keypad, remained encrypted within our system, and remained encrypted when it was removed from our systems."

Despite all that, earlier this week a senior payment executive who asked to stay anonymous shared with mass media that hackers who made compromise with Target were the ones to take PIN data. Meanwhile Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder stated:
"We continue to have no reason to believe that PIN data, whether encrypted or unencrypted, was compromised."
This data breach is considered the second largest in the US history. This incident has already affected the company’s profit. Straight after the leak was revealed, Target started offering a ten percent discount for its users. Nevertheless, the company is experiencing a drop in sales and that is during Christmas, one of the busiest times of the year.
