Army authorities on Friday, claimed that at least 50 Boko Haram insurgents were killed in strong efforts to repel attacks on villagers by the sect in two communities in the northern and eastern parts of Borno on Thursday.

Sagir Musa told journalists in Maiduguri on Friday that army troops gunned down 50 Boko Haram members in a shoot-out to repel the insurgents from further killings at Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government, north of Borno and Bulabulin Ngabura at Konduga local government, eastern part of the state.
“Troops of 5 Brigade of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army have effectively repelled Boko Haram terrorists attack on Gajiram and Bulabulin Ngabura communities in Nganzai and Konduga local government areas of Borno State. Troops pursued the terrorists to their camps and with air support, about 50 terrorists were killed in a shoot-out.
“Subsequently, the villages have been rescued from the fangs of the insurgents. At the moment, the 5 Brigade troops are pursuing the remnants of the fleeing terrorists by blocking all possible exit routes. When the military spokesman was asked of the civilian casualties, he however, said: “The exact number is not known by the military at the moment but local authorities perhaps may have the figure”.
Suspected Boko Haram members invaded the two communities on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, killing about 15 villagers. Details also emerged on Friday that an aide to Gov Kashim Shettima, Alhaji Mohammed Sani (alias A. Banje) was among the civilian casualties in the attacks by the insurgents.
Sources also revealed that the insurgents in the attack on Bulabulin Ngaura abducted a family of five. It was gathered that the Boko Haram men wore army camouflage, mounted roadblocks and operated in the community between 10pm and 2am while another group stormed Gajiram at about 10am.
