Anambra Assembly Votes For Additional State - Orimili State

Do we need more states in Nigeria?

The Anambra State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, threw its weight behind the clamour for the creation of Orimili State out of the present Anambra.

Passing the motion sponsored by Hon. Tony One week Muonagor and seconded by Emeka Idu, the House urged Governor Peter Obi, National Assembly members from the state, and Anambra indigenes within and outside the country to support the demand for the new state.

"Anambra State House of Assembly hereby pledges its total support for the creation of Orimili State. We also commend the Ohaneze Ndigbo for setting up a committee headed by the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, on the creation of Orimili state," said the Speaker of Anambra House, Chinwe Nwebili, while reading the resolution of the House on the matter.

According to Nwebili, the new state being demanded would comprise of the Ogbaru, Anambra East and West, Onitsha North and South, Idemili North and South, Dunukofia, Oyi and Ayamelum Local Government Areas of the state.

In the various contributions, the state lawmakers said there was dire need for the creation of Orimili State because it would fast-track development in the 10 Local Government Areas which, according to them, had not felt much of government’s presence.

"It is only fair that one additional state is created in the South East, particularly from Anambra State, because other states have benefited in state creation. Besides, the Igbo people are at disadvantaged position in the scheme of things and that is why we need a new state to correct the imbalance," the sponsor of the motion, Muonagor, said.

He added that the demand for the creation of the state was in pursuit of equity because the south east zone had been marginalised, and the state was qualified to be given a new state because of its population of four million people.
