Cyprus OKs Russian aircrafts to use airbase near Pathos – media



Cyprus authorities have permitted Russian military aircrafts to use the Andreas Papandreou airbase, situated near Pathos, the Cyprus Weekly newspaper reports. An agreement on cooperation in this field is yet to be signed.

On Thursday, Defense Minister Photis Photiu, with the consent of the Foreign Minister, set forward a proposal to assist Russia in this field for the Cabinet’s consideration. The latter gave its consent for Russian aircrafts of various types to land at the Cyprian air base but only in emergency situations and for humanitarian reasons. At the same time, the Russian air force won’t be allowed to use warehouses of the Andreas Papandreou airbase.

Tunisia's new premier Mehdi Jomaa took office on Friday to lead a caretaker government until elections this year, the state news agency said, after the ruling Islamist party resigned in a deal to complete a transition to democracy.

US weighs targeted sanctions against South Sudan.



The United States is weighing targeted sanctions against South Sudan due to its leaders' failure to take steps to end a crisis that has brought the world's youngest nation to the brink of civil war, sources briefed on US discussions told Reuters.

"It's a tool that has been discussed," a source told Reuters on condition of anonymity about the possibility of US sanctions against those blocking peace efforts or fueling violence in South Sudan. Another source confirmed the remarks, though both declined to provide details on the precise measures under consideration.

White House still researching how to continue non-lethal supply to Syria rebels.



The White House said on Friday that it is still reviewing how to resume shipments of non-lethal aid to moderate rebel groups fighting in Syria after an incident last month where Islamist fighters seized supplies from a warehouse.

"No decisions have been made yet regarding the resumption of non lethal assistance to the (Syrian Military Council), but we have resumed deliveries of non-lethal assistance into northern Syria to civilian actors," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at a briefing.
"This has nothing to do with our support for the moderate military opposition, but rather the security of our assistance," Carney said.

Exchange Rate: Naira stays strong against dollar, Pound




Lagos – The Nigerian currency, the Naira, on Friday traded on a stable platform against two major international currencies, the dollar and the pound sterling, as transactions ended for the week.
The dollar and the pound sterling were sold at 155.72 and 170, respectively, at the official and bureau de change since Jan. 6.
At the black market, the Naira was exchanged for the dollar at 170, while the pound sterling went for 270.

2014 PRESIDENTIAL PARDON LOADING: U.K to tranfer James Ibori and other 751 prisoners to Nigeria prisons



THE Federal Government, on Thursday, signed a Prisoners’ Transfer Agreement (PTA) with the United Kingdom for the transfer of James Ibori, a former governor of Delta State, alongside other 751 Nigerians in British prisons, to complete their jail terms in Nigeria.

Ibori, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for corruption and money laundering charges at the Southwark Crown Court 9 in London, in April 2012, and has been incarceration in the country.
However, the signing of the PTA by both countries signalled the fact that James Ibori and others would be repatriated to complete their jail terms in Nigeria without a choice.
