House of Reps approves extension of Emergency rule in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa

The House of Reps, yesterday May 15th approved the extension of emergency rule in the troubled states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states, after a crucial closed door meeting with security chiefs. President Jonathan had sent a letter to members of the National Assembly a few days ago requesting for extension of emergency rule in the three states. The Senate would have to agree to this too before it can be fully effected. Their own deliberation and voting will take place May 20th. Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states have been the worst hit since the emergency of Boko Haram.

Africa plans emergency force, but can it deliver?

NAIROBI  (AFP)
Aware that they have failed to get a fully-fledged peacekeeping force up and running, African leaders now plan a rapid-deployment emergency force, but analysts question whether it can deliver.
The African Union’s “African Standby Brigade”, meant to intervene swiftly in regional crises, has made little headway since preparations for a proposed force of 32,500 troops and civilians drawn from the continent’s five regions started a decade ago.
Only two of five regional sections are close to becoming operational.
A new emergency force announced this week is intended to bridge the gap pending the full coming into operation of that brigade, AU security chief Ramtane Lamamra said at the organisation’s headquarters in the Ethiopian capital.

State of emergency : President Jonathan declares state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe

President Jonathan has declared an indefinite state of emergency in three Northern states, Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, citing insecurity. He made the announcement in a nationwide live broadcast this evening. With this declaration, the president has given the military the authority to take over the security of the states, though all political office holders in the states would still continue in office.

President Jonathan said the efforts at dialogue with militants will continue but will take extra ordinary measures to maintain peace. He immediately ordered troops to be deployed to the states to arrest and detain suspected terrorists, take over of suspicious buildings, and detain persons suspected to be in possession of arms. On terrorism, he said:
"We will hunt them down, fish them out and bring them to justice. No matter what it takes, we will win this war against terror"
This action is so long overdue. Just wondering why Nassarawa wasn't included.

Observations & questions for today's emergency activists - By Reno Omokri

Article written by Reno Omokri - Special Assistant ( New Media) to the President.
Some emergency activist DID NOT leave the PDP until they failed to get what they wanted. Being frustrated doesn't make you a progressive!
Their narcissism is evident when they make an article that probably refers to them in passing all about them.
Their vanity is evident when they criticize everything in government and the past as bad except what they achieved.

(Photos) Pres GEJ Pays Unscheduled Emergency Visit To Police College, Ikeja

On the way to an ECOWAS meeting in the Ivory Coast, President Goodluck Jonathan’s plane was diverted to Lagos where he made a surprise visit to the police college in Ikeja. Sources say that even his top aides were taken unaware by the unscheduled stop.  The police authorities were also caught unawares and had in fact rented the college to host a private wedding, which is illegal. President Jonathan demanded that the top brass explain these actions to which they had no sufficient answers.

We are prepared for any emergency – LASEMA

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday said that it was prepared for any emergency arising from flooding in the state.

LASEMA General Manager, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

He said the state had scaled through the heavy rains without experiencing serious flooding, due to the early preparations and the measures put in place to combat it.

“We are prepared for emergencies as we’ve  learnt from the past to prepare for the future.

“The agency has put in place adequate measures to reduce the incidence of flood.

“We have ensured continuous dredging of canals, construction of new primary, secondary and tertiary canals.

“Our preparedness has yielded results.

“Lagos State is not experiencing flooding, in spite of the fact that we are in the coastal region,” he said.

He said that LASEMA was working with engineers in all the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, to mitigate the effect of the flood.

Oke-Osanyintolu, however, advised Lagos residents to desist from blocking canals with refuse.

He asked them to contact the residential engineers at their respective local governments, for any flooding.
