FG to release white paper on NECO – Wike

Federal Government will soon release the white paper on the Steve Oransaye-led Presidential Committee on the Rationalisation and Restructuring of Federal Government parastatals, commissions and agencies.
The Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, who said this in Abuja, added that this would clear the speculations on the recommendation to scrap the National Examinations Council.
Wike, who spoke with reporters after monitoring the 2013 national common entrance examination at Junior Secondary School, Wuse-Abuja, said agitations over the report were unnecessary as government would consider an alternative measure, if NECO eventually get scrapped.

He said, “These agitations are baseless, while would Nigerians not wait and hear the position of government, if government is going to scrap NECO, government will obviously make alternative arrangements.
“I do not think that is in place now, however in the next few weeks you will know government position, but be rest assured that whatever decision government takes it will be for the general interest of the entire Nigerians, I think government is looking at all the options but be rest assured that nothing that will come out that will be to the disadvantage of citizens.
“Nobody is talking of scrapping NECO, I know that there has been a report by Oronsaye’s committee, government committee and whatever that is meeting are going to announce it in due course but be assured that something good is going to come out of it.”
The minister also criticised the 30 per cent merit policy used by the agency for admission into the 104 Unity schools in the federation.
He suggested a review of the policy, noting that it ought to be 60 per cent merit ration and 40 per cent based on other factors.
Meanwhile, a brief analysis given by the Head of NECO office in FCT, Mustapha Abdul indicated that only 86 candidates applied for the examination in Yobe State, while 23,329 candidates entered in Lagos State.
