Corp Member Monica Ohouha Constructed Corpers Lodge In Kaduna State

Monica Onuoha, an Abia State Indigene posted to Kaduna State during the Batch A 2012/2013 NYSC year, constructed a Corpers Lodge worth over 5 million naira and she did this with donations from Northerners. Amazing, right?

Below is a story from someone who attended the commissioning of the lodge...
Miss Monica Onuoha used this one year youth service to make impact on the lives of her fellow corp members and the Sabon Gaya community of Chikun Local Government. It was an emotional commissioning on Jan 31st, 2013 when Ms. Onuoha stood with the State Coordinator to cut the ribbon, formally opening an 8 room lodge for Corp Members at Government Secondary School Sabon Gaya, Kaduna. There was much joy on the faces of the NYSC officials and the LG officials who were in attendance. Some of her donors were on hand that day as well.

Miss Onuoha, an Abia State indigene began the project a month after being posted to her PPA. She shared her experiences with Corp Members, the press and the general public present at the commissioning. One thing that stood out to the crowd was her willingness to bravely knock on doors to solicit funds, get contractors for the project and actually complete the project. She also mentioned that apart from living in a different place, she has now learnt the basics of building a structure (Skill Acquisition!!).

Due to the construction of the Lodge, GSS Sabon Gaya will have a comfortable place for Corp Members to lay their hands. This will greatly benefit the students.

Ms. Onuoha also completed other community service projects during her service year: a skills acquisition programme for women in her host community, donation of school books, donation of hospital materials, and afforestation.

As a corp member, I was inspired by Ms. Onuoha's selflessness and courage to execute such a massive project.
I hope to do something (even on a small scale) to make impact on my host community as well. I was also touched by the hands that were on deck throughout the project. She did not fail to speak highly of her fellow Batch A Corp Member posted to the school, a person who acted as her right hand man throughout the building process; selfless team work at its finest!

Kudos Monica Onuoha and all those completing CDS projects in their host communities.
