On November 23, 2002, fifty armed jihadi terrorists, or “freedom fighters” as they were called by the West, seized the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow taking 850 hostages. The liberal radio station Echo of Moscow immediately declared this to be Putin’s government fault, the government couldn’t be trusted, and unless it guaranteed safety to all of Russia’s citizens, Putin should resign.

In many ways this fear is justified: communism is a dirty word in the English culture. I recall getting my copy of “International Socialist Review” mailed to me in the United States – it arrived with a brown paper wrapper, the same as pornography.

(Please note: American mailing practices for pornography have been gleaned solely from second-hand information, of course, so I may be mistaken on this point.)

But perhaps it was better that my mailman thought I was getting porn instead of knowing I was a communist, LOL? Because nobody gets thrown in jail, spied on, harassed, denied loans, demoted, fired, shunned, insulted or deported for porn in the United States, but they sure do for promoting communism in “the land of the free”.

Ahh… What happened to the good old days of the Cold War, when rich, imperial America was doing battle with poor, agrarian Russia and China, and Iran and Venezuela were corrupt, fascist regimes serving the interests of American capital? These days, that seems so long, long ago!

Above, the official logo of the big BRICS summit, held in Xiamen, China, September 3-5, 2017. It was reported that there were dead canaries all over the place, covered in coal dust. No official explanation has been provided, but Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese homologue, Xi Jinping were reported to be smiling from start to finish.
